Please note the Cafe du Cycliste Prize Draw Closed on 8th November
Today's video is a good old comparison in the name of science! Which is fastest? An ascent up Alpe d'Huez in real life or one up Alpe Du Zwift? The real life comparison takes place during an event called La Grimpée Alpe d'Huez, a Time Trial up the iconic climb 2 days prior to La Marmotte! And the virtual one takes place on Jayne's and my last day in our apartment.
The stylish folk at French cycling and lifestyle apparel brand, Café du Cycliste, also gave me a beautiful blue jersey which I wear in this video, and an eye catching t-shirt. As you've seen in previous videos, I love their French chic!
And very kindly Café du Cycliste are offering the chance to someone to win a £200 voucher to spend in their stores (on-line or highstreet), open to those who subscribe to their news letter in the link below and complete the form:

Oooh. A Raffle! I am in! Great comparison video Phil. Altitude is so incredibly important. So is wind, and road resistance. But I must say Zwift got the alpe segment down really, really well. Hope to see the wattbike back soon!

Agreed Gerben 💯 - Alpe du Zwift, is truly excellent, and enables us to practice ahead of the real thing. I was surprised about the impact of altitude on the power though, and explore this in a little video with an hour of power to come . Hoping to be back on the WattBike in about 10days 🤞 Very best of luck in the prize draw 🍀

Thank you Phillip for the most fascinating comparison. I rode in the Pyrenees recently and was stunned by the effects of jet lag and power loss. Mine was much less science and more exasperation and next time I’ll allow for the time to get acclimated before heading on a bike packing trip.

Absolute pleasure Greg 💯 - and for sure I too was unpleasantly surprised. I didn’t really start to feel decent until La Marmotte itself. They say it takes a 10 days to acclimatise to the impact of living at altitude - and I did a little test to demonstrate the effect 2 days after returning to London 👍. Thanks ever so much for your super positive support 🙏

Great vid Phill, fantastic views irl on the Alpe. I entered the draw too, although i'm never lucky at these. Something to win for free, and me a Scotsman; hold me back. On my pension it might be the only way i can afford one of these fantastic shirts - still, the lottery is on this week (lol). I can't believe that you cycled the Alpe du Zwift with just oven an hour to your movers coming; that's REAL commitment to your viewers. I'd have needed 2 hours for the climb, an hour to cool down, 30 mins for stretching and more for a shower; in fact i wouldn't have done it, her indoors would have had a 'face on'. Keep the great content coming. ;)))

Omg Phil, I started watching this video thinking about the stunning views, then switched to thinking Jayne’s a superstar for riding it with you for filming purposes …. But then you’re surrounded by boxes, you have 1 hour before the removal men come and you jump on the bike 🤣 Jayne deserves all the kudos, she’s an absolute superstar! In all seriousness, I hope the move went well, and you’re feeling better after 3 days of sickness. I was laughing at a finish of 50 minutes 💪 If I’m at turn 8 at 60 minutes I’m doing well. Thats super super lovely of you Pena 💯🙏😊 - really appreciate you doing that! And there is no doubt Jayne is a superstar - her first ever 2 climbs were Alpe d’Huez followed by Col du Glandon !! Not a bad way to open your account e-bike or not !! And for sure chaos rained down the morning of the move - I’d not have left it so late, but wasn’t well enough to ride, and then realised I would have the WattBike for weeks/months - so needed to get the job done 😅. Such a great climb. I stopped in the same spot in 2019 to take photo's (as well as a couple of other spots too) on the way up, so I'd say zwift is faster too...no photo stops on zwift! I do hope you have done the descent turning at Huez and going down the side of the mountain. Zwift’s algorithms are specific to a riders ‘honesty’ about certain settings and of course the ‘in game’ graphics are quite entertaining but the reality of a real outdoor ride up a real mountain where gravity and weather conditions play their part in your performance are really hard to replicate. @@BikeRacingWithoutMercy I have discovered Graeme Obree’s book The Obree Way and he basically says that Turbo Training is about truth. Make the turbo trainer resistance fixed, make your bike gear fixed and your time training fixed. You now have a ride of truth. Speed is distance over time. Your performance is the only variable. No virtual power or anything except your speed. How far you go in your chosen time depends on your speed. 1 trainer (fixed resistance) 1 bike (fixed gear) 1 clock (1 hour) 1 rider Go as hard as you can. Recover Repeat when recovery is good. Group rides bring lots of variables but allow certain freedoms. Graeme Obree beat Moser’s World Hour Record and he also beat Chris Boardman in the World’s. He has said that his turbo trainer is so important it would be the first thing he would take from his house if his house was on fire. With this set up your goal is to cover more distance in the hour. To do that need to get faster. Enjoy your rides and keep your bikes the right way up. Big hills + big chain ring = A stronger rider. 🎩

  • @BikeRacingWithoutMercy

Very much the end of an era, Paul - last 11 years there ! And for sure I’ll never again have a little recovery corner with such spectacular views 🤩. I think I confused things with the Zwift comparison - because by riding at 250W I rode at the power I was able to deploy for the real thing. So altitude didnt impact on the time difference between the two. It would have impacted had I gone max effort indoors instead of 250. I think it’s mainly down to the road and aero resistance - and even Ruben who was not impacted by the altitude because he had spent a lot of time in the mountains over the summer was about 5mins slower for the same power. So I reckon the delta is about right 🤞. Looking forward to getting back on Zwift and seeing you in Watopia 💪

Enjoyed the video! You definitely need to change the trainer difficulty, even down to 50%. It doesn’t make it easier (the same power is required) you’ll just need to change gear slightly less and you may ride a slightly higher gear. It’ll feel so much better if you’re not grinding at 45w (not quite as bad as yellow bike guy!) - more efficient and better on your joints.

  • @BikeRacingWithoutMercy

    @BikeRacingWithoutMercy

    2 жыл бұрын

Cheers Ste 🙏 - hope all good ! Yep - I’ve run a few comparisons on TD100% vs 50% (see video from about 10months ago). The think is that whilst the power is the same, it doesn’t prepare you for the super steep gradients - so in real life I run out of gears at about 12% even with a 32 on the back, so prefer the realism of running out of gears at a similar point on Zwift . But yes - easier on the joints 💯

Nice video Phil. I personally wasn't really affected by the altitude. I did arrive a few days earlier though, so I might had acclimatised already. Only on the first night I noticed a bit of labored breathing, but the rest of the time I had no issues. Also during the Grimpee I had actually a lower heartrate than normal for me. My PB on AdZ I average 255w with avg HR 154, while on the real Alpe I did 263w with 143 HR avg. Maybe I just tolerate the altitude better?

Cheers Marco 🙏 very kind of you as always💯. I’ve filmed a little video to explore this in more detail. But the impact does vary from person to person including the severity and time taken to adapt. I was certainly much better adapted on the Thursday than the Monday . Also I understand that the more time someone has spent at altitude / in the mountains in the previous life, the faster they adapt. So given all of your holidays in the mountains maybe that helps also. 👍

Oh yeah Phil! You are losing something like 8-12% of oxygen at that altitude (depending on if you are acclimated) and it gets worse as you get higher! I live at 1600m, and did a race that went from 2,286 - to around 4,267. My 75% started feeling like all outs.

Thanks ever so much for your insight into this Chris🙏 - thats extremely helpful and backs up a bit of the research I undertook after I realised that altitude might be at play. Living at 1600m must mean you are pretty well adapted to lower oxygen and the big climbs - so if at 2800-4300m you were feeling all in at your 75%, I can’t imagine how I’d have imploded 😅

Great video, but just to clear up the altitude point, that limited you to 250w, it doesn’t explain the 4 min difference of two rides done at 250w, just your exertion in generating the 250w. I assume the difference is road surface, drive train efficiency, your body position cda and wind. Any chance you were lighter out in France too?

  • @BikeRacingWithoutMercy

Agreed, Mr Shay - yes the 250W simply reflected the power I was able to deploy in real life due to the altitude - and had no impact on the test results. Good clarification 🙏. Yes - I think that Zwift assumes better aero position for the rider and also generous rolling resistance (temperature shouldn’t have been too much of an issue). 👍

This has really made me want to do the real ride, I always expected Zwift would be much faster. Something about knowing the route from Zwift it makes it so appealing, like driving on a circuit in real life you know from a game (which I'd also love to do!). In the same vain Zwift has made me not want to ride real Ventoux 🤣

i am going to test with the steel frame zwifts bike. i think aero in the game is way less demanding than in real life. Zwift rates the steel frame 1 star but the same 2 stars with weight. it may even effect climbs as well. Its good if you want to race you can choose how hard you want to ride.

@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy Hi riding on the drops usually gives me a 1kmh average difference on the bike the faster i go the more beneficial. I think Zwift bunch up the Pelton up close rather than on real life it would be spread out. Also in real life you would have to ride smooth in the peloton otherwise you could run into the riders around you. While it could be imp lamented in AI or offline simulation it may be harder to do online because who would want knocked off there bike.

Once back in London I did a little one hour of power test 2 days after La Marmotte in order to see what the altitude difference was (same for me 20-30W). Very impressive time up the Alpe in real life, I’d like to go back and try again in the future. For sure I felt a bit better for my second ride in the Alps, Galibier - but even by the third day (this video of La Grimpee) I was still only 90-95%.

Curious that they have roadwork where you might have to stop in an event that's timed. That's not really fair. :/ So I guess that this confirms that a substantial part of why Zwift is faster than irl is indeed the Zwift assumes everyone has a better drag coefficient than they actually do. In your last comparison prior to this one, doing a 100km tempo ride, you concluded that Zwift was ~11.7% faster, while this time it was still faster but only ~8.1% faster. Most likely because the speeds were lower and so drag coefficient affected the speed and therefore the final time less. Ps. I'm a little bit perplexed as to where the 8,9% slower number came from though... 50min14sec = 3 014 seconds 4min24sec = 264 seconds 264 / 3014 = ~0.08759. So, even if you were to round it up, wouldn't it be ~8.8%? Did I miss something? ^^' Ps2. I double-checked your maffs in the previously mentioned video as well, so I just had to check. This is slowly becoming a tradition. Let's see what I may have overlooked this time around. ;P Ps3. Miss the streams already. If there wasn't for these vlogs, there would be a severe shortage of #JayneSpotting going around as well. :D

Hi Mark - and a great decision to get back into cycling, and in my opinion inside is the perfect (safe) place to rebuild fitness. If you have a smart trainer like a WattBike Atom or a Wahoo Kickr Bike, or a smart turbo trainer like a Wahoo Kickr V5 / V6 or Tackx Neo) then the gradients on Zwift will be automatically picked up by the device and the resistance will increase when going uphill and decrease when the gradient reduces or flattens off / goes down. Most feel pretty realistic - when the Trainer Difficulty setting on Zwift is set to 75-100%. Hope this helps

I would not worry about a couple of percents less oxygen in the blood if I were talking all the way up Alpe du Zwift. Coincidentally I remember I set a time of 54.38 exactly in the 90s but then the timed segment started about one kilometer before that actual turn to the left where it starts at Zwift. On your time trial, was the start also before this point? By the way I find it nothing short of ridiculous that an organized event like the time trial up l'Alpe d'Huez sees you with traffic jams and even traffic lights. The same ride on Tempus Fugit on Zwift (not on the TT bike) took 2 hours 36mins (there’s a video on this also). I’ve proven the same on Box Hill and Leith Hill in videos. It has taken me 4 years and improved conditioning to go and beat all the previous PR's I earned with my wheel-on trainer. I do find on Rouvy its a bit more accurate, however the really steep pitches aren't what they are in real life. This past Sept I rode in the Dolomites and Italian Alps.
