Great vid, it's a good looking bit of kit this. That smaller than bbs motors front chain ring will be so welcome on modern mtb frames too, Bafang take note because it's about time the poor chain line issues are dealt with.

They are. I think Bafang are moving onto other things. They don't even bother to show the BBSHD at shows anymore.
Can't wait to build a allroad bike with that motor!

I've managed to destroy 3 BBSHD's, so might as well give the Photon a try. Installing mine at the same time with your videos.

The plastic plate at the end is an optional stop block you can wire tie (or similar) to the frame. Also, for some internal views, there's some out in the wild, related to FCC certification for the Bluetooth system. CYC has updated the user manual, describing the greasing. Under that QC sticker is likely a single screw that holds on the controller cover. IMO one negative is the very wide Q - I hope CYC offers a shorter spindle eventually, more suitable for 68-73mm BB installs.

Thats good regarding the manual. I must have an older version. I have made a 3D printed part to use to locate the motor. I don't think I would have been able to use the plastic piece due to my gear cable. Appreciate the advice!

@@HighVoltageKits I forgot to thank you for this video. I'm hoping for the best with this motor. I don't view it as a BBSHD "killer" or even a replacement - I think it'll serve the purpose, desires, and performance that disappointed Tongsheng buyers were hoping for. I also wonder if Bafang will view this motor as a threat and develop a new DIY BBS-ish motor to compete (as opposed to the M625). I'm also hoping that CYC obtains UL certification for the entire motor system, similar to what I believe Bosch has.

Those M3 holes might be for bolting onto an existing bracket on your frame if it has one. My Diamondback Atroz has them for a chain guide. i have a Stealth Gen 3 on the way and I might have to cut one off. Don't care. I want the power for single track. Hope you enjoy the Photon.
@HighVoltageKits

Appreciated. It got me thinking about other potential uses for sure. Maybe a chain guide. It would suck to get the chain stuck in the gap between the ring and the motor.
I just took delivery of a gen 3 stealth 😅 Will be interested to see how this compares

I think this will be a much easier installation.
With regards to applying the correct torque to the adjustable face pin tool. You don't need a torque wrench etc. An experienced mechanic should be able to get it within or pretty damn close to the acceptable range just by feel. (Or feel with a tappy tap hammer haha) Which is ofcourse why there is no way to connect a torque wrench or torque block to the tool.
@HighVoltageKits
Жыл бұрын
I will do my best to get it nice and tight. Most people doing this I doubt will qualify as an experienced mechanic?
@AndrewDCDrummond
Жыл бұрын
@High Voltage I think the only way would be to stick a torque wrench into a bolt on something else, set to the required torque and then grip the wrench handle at about the same length as the CYC tool and try to guage the feel of how much pressure is being applied to the torque wrench and then get the same feel on the CYC tool. That's quite a high torque though, might be quite difficult to gauge the same feel when you are tightening that hard.
Talk on the street is it's about the same power as the BBS02. Hoping it's a bit more. Fingers crossed!
@HighVoltageKits

Its on the bike, install overview will be tomorrow. I am impressed so far. I think easily on par with a BBS02.
I am building up an MTB with a Stealth Gen 3 at the moment. I noted as you did that there are channels in the spindle as if there should be O-rings in the grooves. My spindle, however, had no O-rings. Does yours?
@HighVoltageKits

Yes there is one on each side. I think you likely should have them. Might want to check that on the facebook group or with CYC. Might be an ommision?
Thanks for the video. I’ve recently built up a mtb with the Photon and absolutely loving it. I’ve seen on a thread that under the QC sticker there is a screw which allows you to remove the cover. Inside is the controller unit which can be removed for replacing. Did you notice with yours that the motor got noisier after an initial break in period? I’ve put about 120km on mine and the whirring is definitely louder. Have you had any luck lubricating the gears?
@HighVoltageKits
8 ай бұрын
I have not lubricated anything. Unfortunately, mine has issues and is looking likely to have to go back to the dealer for repair under warranty. I will do a breakdown once I know what is up with it. It had about 1000km on it. It looks like you can remove the controllers so regrease becomes possible but after 100kms it should not need that.
That looks really good and yet very small 😜😋 where are you going to fit to Cap? Greathings DS🇩🇪

I enjoy your videos. Wonder if you could help please. I'm running the CYC photon with the small 102 display and everything is working. My wife recently purchase the 103 display and we cannot get connection, no screen light up. If you could help that would be great
@HighVoltageKits

Check one of the pins did not get bent during connection. Failing that try the old one again. It could be a bad display. Maybe contact your dealer if it won’t power on still.
Thoughts on repairability and servicing/lubrication? How do you access the guts of this thing? In comparison, Bafang and Tongshen are "agricultural", but fixable.

@@HighVoltageKits Thanks, I already own a bike with belt instead of chain. I like it. it's noiseless and clean. Now I think to convert it to ebike. And actually I've found on cycmotor site in user's manuals that it allows to put any kind of front sprocket with 104BCD Chain Ring mount. So, yes it is possible in other models but not with Photon model ;)
Have you installed the photon or stealth on a carbon frame? Definitely mixed reviews on whether or not to do a conversion on carbon. I have a 50 cm Niner
@HighVoltageKits
9 ай бұрын
Hey Debbie. I have not used a carbon frame. I stear clear of the stuff. It's brilliant until it fails and then it can be catastrophic. My mate in the uk nearly lost his face when he hit a pot hole with his Bianchi carbon. The forks sheered off. It put me right off. That might not be a fair assessment of carbon as a whole but the result is I haven't tried one. They sell well tho so you might be able to do a good trade. Sorry I can't be of more help.

@@HighVoltageKits It's a Niner gravel bike. Its a solid comfortable ride and never any issues with it whatsoever. Chatted with electrify your bike and they've installed cyc stealth for the past 3 years with no issues.....hmmmm??? Definitely not selling it. Its a memorial bike to my riding partner who passed away suddenly
I shot them an email aswell regarding the repairability as there is currently no parts available anywhere or even an exploded view/drawings. Nothing. Also asked them about belt drive chainrings and they said that's in work. A standard BCD spider would also be great. It's as much of a black box as bosch motor currently. No ebike motor is maintenance free. I want to build myself a torque sensing PAS bike. This motor is the strongest and nicest option available but I think I might go with the tongsheng tzds2b which is the only other one I know.

Mine is held up with customs clearance but hope to get it this week. Battery is a far way off. Is the chainring Shimano HG compatible? Or just standard (SRAM, KMC etc)?
@HighVoltageKits
Жыл бұрын
The chainring to the best of my knowledge is proprietary.
@hindesite
Жыл бұрын
@High Voltage I get that the chainring is proprietary as it fits over a motor hub casing to achieve a decent chainline but it still has to work with chains. Shimano 12sp chains have Hyperglide, and the inside plates extend in to the space where the wide chainring teeth fit, so the teeth need to be relieved slightly to allow this. If they don't, Shimano chains will need to be swapped for SRAM or KMC etc, and then you lose the advantage of Hyperglide cassettes. I hope CYC got this right.
@HighVoltageKits
Жыл бұрын
Sorry I misunderstood you. I am using a 10spd SRAM chain on this. This might not with those chains. I will ask at CYC.
@hindesite
Жыл бұрын
@High Voltage if you look carefully at the wide teeth, there should be a chamfered edge that allows the tapered ends of Shimano inside plates to fit. If they are just square - like the narrow teeth - they won't work with Hyperglide chains. Well, not until they've generated some clearance : -)

So the end user can barely disassemble the unit and will require shipment to an entirely different country if it breaks.
