This is the coolest idea for a video, I’d immediately watch more videos speaking similarly about other movies. It’s nice to talk about cybersecurity in fiction as it can get really monotonous and bland sometimes. Thanks

The car system in this movie is a perfect reflection of the tram system at the DFW Airport when it was first installed. If anything went wrong it left passengers stranded in pods, often in places it would be impossible to exit (midair) without any obvious way to contact anyone. And when the power went out, no way at all to contact anyone, or open a window in the blistering heat, and this was back before cellphones. Needless to say, it had to be changed. 🙄 I’m so grateful no one died… that I know of.

I wish more professors that use more creative ways to teach and make learning cyber security more fun to learn and relatable. Thanks for the video!

Biggest computer security risk in that movie was the same with many companies up until domains and Active Directory type systems were implemented; One computer guy running everything with absolute power and no detailed complete written documentation of procedures and processes in place: no redundancy, no knowledgebase, no one else know wtf computer guy knows. When the guy is gone or fired, good luck to the new guy figuring things out! The most obvious mistake the designers of Jurassic Park builders made was the door handles. No need to even mention the failure of designing a full automated park with extremely dangerous monster that security and containment of them relied on electricity and where was the park built? On a remote tropical island that experienced thunderstorms and crazy weather. Brilliant! What could possibly go wrong?

The thing I feel like could really help with preventing ransomware is having a way to make files read only and then have a version history for stuff that you are still working on but haven't finished. Not suggesting that anyone should backup to cd-rom but essentially just if you have a system that can be marked as read only and it's hardware level, well it's harder to get the backups deleted. Of course this doesn't help if some bad person just wants to get a copy of the data and then asks for payment to not leak it.

I still prefer the approach to blacklist everything and then whitelist what I actually need. Like e.g. noscript for firefox doesn't allow any javascript unless I explicitly allow it on a web page where I actually want to use it. It may seem like more work but in the end, it does exactly what you want without having to guess anything.

That approach is fine in many scenarios but what I meant to say is that even if you use that approach you still need to 'decide' which files are safe, so you are not avoiding the detection problem, you just have it in reverse.

@@pcsecuritychannel I rather look at it the way I look at coding. Some say "memory management is too important to leave it up to programmers" while others like me say "memory management is too important to leave it up to the computer." When you know what you want to code and how memory affects it, you are better at handling it yourself than a computer would be (although that may change when machine learning gets better) and likewise, when you know what your system is supposed to do and you know which software is needed to achieve that goal, you can judge better yourself than any software could which software should get access and keep everything else blacklisted. It requires some understanding of it which many people do not have but in my view, it is the safest approach possible.

@@PEdulisIt boils down to which one is more likely to make a mistake. And the only way to know that for sure is to put both methods to the test. Test, test, test. Software development is surprisingly devoid of testing these days. A lot of programmers act more on faith or word-of-mouth than on data.

Another classic movie that at its core has cybersecurity is star wars new hope. Network segmentation and least privilege and the empire wouldn't have been had been defeated. It's also an example of a failure in defense in depth. They didn't assume the attackers would or could be aboard the ship and there for let any diord access to everything. Sounds like IOT now days.

We are back to K.I.S.S. I remember 20 years ago speaking with a local company office about backing up data. An employee thought that the filing cabinets were fireproof🙄 I pointed out that even if they were by the time the fire brigade had used water to put out the fire then all their documents had disintegrated & the PCs useless. It still took the business 6+ years to enable cloud storage as off-site backup

I always wanted to learn how to hack stuff as a kid but since I lived in eff-all, there was nothing I could find or learn about it. Being someone that played Shadowrun and engaged a lot in Cyberpunk fiction, a lot of this about information is just what it always spoke of. Nowadays however, it's like Cybersecurity courses is all over the place. No longer hidden away behind the corner with some foulmouthed know-it-alls, but actually suits. Funny how the world moves.

This is great idea and would be big as a series, if not already doing it. Especially reviewing movies, with a focus on describing the types of attack surfaces as you do here, but also offering what alternatives would have been needed to avoid the security problem. Could even do movies that have nothing to do with digital security, as every movie deals with opposing forces with at least one side trying to breach the other side.

Could you easily run 2 of the best antivirus software programs together in some way to get better detection than either on their own? Even if it meant that the second AV only scanned a backup of the original drive which had the first AV on the drive itself?

2 AV’s make the system break because they are incompatible one with each other. But you can have a second opinion scanner if that’s what you want.

Don't overrely on automation and do not hire just 2 people to run the entire system. I did like how they went about it in the movie already back then, masking the hack as debugging and indeed having code visible on the screen.

16:29 : well , my question is this : why has this chanel seem to change course ? you are talking about the necessity for not just simply buy a product but to test its settings as well in order for it to work properly. But ,even you ,who are someone with the knowledge to do such things ,seems to have stopped doing this . Your videos are mostly becoming "theoretical/philosophical" rather than practical. I'm ignorant at security issues , that's why i need someone who can do those things. On the other hand , i've also watched *Jurassic Park* ( *in fact ,when i was a kid i must have watched it more than 30 times ,i love that movie* !! ) ,and i've also concluded similar - more or less - assumptions with yours !! So this video was nice to watch but it didn't offer me anything more than theory , and i can also do theory , i don't need a security expert to do theory , i need a security expert to do what i can't , and that's testing . You used to do that , but nowadays it's obvious(through your videos) that your channel has changed course for some reason ....
