Cyber Shadow: A Cut Above The Rest

Ойындар

Yacht Club Games has done it again! Cyber Shadow is an excellent 2D indie platformer that is both a love letter to games such as Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, and Mega Man, but also a game with a clear cut identity, not hidden in the shadow of it's inspirations. It's the classic Ninja sidescroller revival I've been waiting for.

As some one who has beaten the game like 20+ times, I'll say the shuriken and the kunai upgrade are both very useful. They can chip in a ton of damage on a boss, as well as using them to weaken an enemy that takes multiple hits to kill from a distance then finish with a slash in a few places to let you keep moving. I agree the check points being a choice to upgrade becomes a real debate on runs past a first playthrough, as you know what's coming up and how much money you have to spend or save for a harder section later. And the SP refills become very important later in the game when your mobility is directly tied to your SP.

You should get it, it's a fantastic game, especially on subsequent playthroughs when you've gotten good at the game.

Swag blade is hype as hell but the bike segment can suck my left cheek. I'd probably appreciate it more if it didn't come in the section of the game where you have full movement capability, because dang is it fun to dash strike through the world.

I know right! It's such a shame the game doesn't have a NG+, I'd love to see how fast you could blitz through the main campaign.

@@TurnstyleVideo Totally! I'd love some kinda hard mode too, but I suspect more modes will show up with DLC eventually... I hope. Til then I've been having fun trying to speedrun the game when time permits.

Honnestly I'm kinda annoyed at people comparing this game and The Messenger, they are just 2 different games, that don't have the same design philosophy, and The Messenger turning into a Metroidvania actually isn't that bad, for starter the Prophet's hint as to where you need to go were clear enough for me (and if you don't get them you can directly ask the shopkeeper to mark where to go on the map with a small fee), so I didn't have trouble finding where to go, and you have some backtracking at the beginning of that part but at the end of the day when you found a new area it's back to a linear plateformer as you can fully do each level in one run without coming back (and you have the case of Cloud Ruins which is entirely a new level design wise when you come back and do it on past version). I won't say it was perfect tough the biggest problem being the lack of teleport point in each levels, which would have made the backtracking less annoying, but again it was a bold move by The Messenger's devs they took risks which is something you rarely see in game nowadays, but I don't it derail at all The Messenger is all about constantly surprising you and mixing thing up, I definitly understand tough that if you wanted a pure linear plateformer and don't like Metroidvania then you're gonna be disappointed, I just personnaly happened to like both genres so when the switch happen I was fine with it, for me it was just a way of the game to keep things fresh and new. Also in term of dialogues The Messenger was way more entertaining than Cyber Shadow. Now don't get me wrong tough I absolutly love Cyber Shadow as well, I have a couple of issues with it tough my first being that Cyber Shadow takes a LONG time until your moveset really come together, most noticeably the Dash is just the single most fun and best upgrade in this game and it really what defines Cyber Shadow, cause up until you get it the game doesn't do anything outstanding, so the beginning it's a well executed but very classic, when you get the Dash tough is when the game REALLY comes together and even more when you get the Double Jump.... to bad this only happen after over 60% of the game is done, and this makes replaying the game kinda boring in the early levels, and this is actually something I prefer The Messenger over Cyber Shadow, The Messenger core gameplay is already fun and his upgrade are added at a better pace than Cyber Shadow, replaying both games really highlight this fact for me. My other problem with Cyber Shadow..... the Motorcycle part and mecha part I fucking hate that level, for it completly break the pace of the game for me, I just finally got all the movements of my character a few room prior and I want to play with it, I want to have fun with that Slashing Dash and Double Jump that really makes the movement super fun and satisfying, and you throw me into a fucking Motorcycle Level get the fuck off with that crap game, it sucked in the Megaman X series, it sucks as well here and it more than overstate is welcome for -_-. Other than that the game is great, another difference in design philosophy with The Messenger is that The Messenger is really more focus on plateforming challenge which lead to some very basic regular ennemies (and The Messenger lack in variety in it's bestiary), Cyber Shadow is more compromise it's not as plateforming heavy as The Messenger and the regular ennemies are move varied and move well incorporate in the Level-Design, and fighting is overall more important in the core gameplay of Cyber Shadow than The Messenger, I also enjoy that Cyber Shadow has pretty much no RNG whatsoever as well as no constantly respawning ennemies, it's a very hard and punishing game but that fact, and the fact there is no Lifes system and the Checkpoint System is very fair, makes it really fun to learn, and this is something that is done very well, I died a lot but never thought this was the game being bullshit or anything just that I had to learn the levels and boss pattern and get better. Tough I'd have to say that unfortunaly this challenging aspect make the game not accessible, this is a game where you have to accept that you are going to die... a lot (which funny enough actually match with the story of the game, as the main theme of the story is accepting death) in order to learn the level and this is just a mentality that less and less players have nowadays, not helping that Cyber Shadow is a very hard game compare to the like of Shovel Knight or The Messenger, and while I'm fine with such a challenge, I know people generally prefer a more accessible game, and so as much as I love it it's really hard to recommend this game to my friends or other player I'm talking with, cause I fear they might have to much trouble and get frustrating with it, which is something I can totally understand. TLDR this is a very good game with some flaws, and definitly not everyone can enjoy it.

It's funny how people have been comparing Cyber Shadow with The Messenger and putting the later down for some weird reason. Good thing I didn't see any of these reviews before playing The Messenger, because maybe I wouldn't have played it, even though while i did enjoy Cyber Shadow, I enjoyed The Messenger much more. Watched a bit more of the review and sorry my dude, first hours of The Messenger are pretty cool, but I thought tematically the metroidvania jump made sense and it was actually cool to see how the level designs I've been through also worked for non linear paths. Point being that it's not because you didn't like the switch in that game that it makes it suck.

I don’t think The Messenger is devoid of good by any stretch. My issue with the metroidvania pivot is that I find that section of the game significantly less engaging then the first few hours of linear platforming. I went from playing something on the quality level of like a 9/10 (even 10/10) game to one about a 5/10. Again, the Metroidvania stuff itself isn’t the issue, it’s just that I personally felt the quality drop off for me significantly after that pivot. I’m self aware enough to know this take is hot as fuck though hahaha

@@TurnstyleVideo I understood what you meant, but I didn't see the switch to metroidvania as a drop in quality. To be fair, it was a lot of fun using the Messenger's mobility to explore the levels the way I wanted, which is something you don't find in Cyber Shadow(and the Messenger's first hours) with all of it's linearity. Does that make Cyber Shadow worse? Of course not, the same way the free exploration absolutely didn't make the Messenger worse. To each their own, I guess.
