    So sorry about your pup, Ben. Losing our furry family members is one of the hardest things in this life. I pray they are on the other side waiting for us when it's our turn. Sweet CX500, BJ. Nice work.

    The custom version was nicer, better handling than the normal cx but less popular due to price. It was £1320 in 1979 and the normal was £1120. Even now, it's a fantastic soft tourer.

    I have such a sentimental soft spot for the CX and it’s so nice to see somebody who takes such good care of them and enjoys them like I did. The on-board view brings back such happy memories (albeit on the other side of the World!) 👍🇬🇧

    On my motorcycles I never go near an Interstate highway, never look for the shortest route to get somewhere. I totally agree back roads are the best. One of my favorite things to do in an unfamiliar area is just to get lost wandering around and discover new things. I had a CX500 (bought new) when I was in college, thanks for the lovely memories! RIP Ben, I'm sure he had a good life with you.

    Sorry to hear that Ben has gone, few things in life are more painful than losing a dog, I recon it’s cos they hit the same chords as children, you have to constantly help and care for them, the only solace is you know he had the best life, sadly some dogs don’t.

    Of all my bikes in the past 50 years of riding, my all time favourite love was my '82 CX500Turbo. I had it repainted in Gloss Midnight Black, and with the gold anodized wheels, oof! It was the classiest looking thing. Went all over the western/southern US on it, from up here in Northern Canada, back in the early 90's. The stator would burn out like clockwork, every 22,000 KM's though, and back then I sadly did not have the knowledge/time/money/place to work/tools etc., to keep replacing them. After the 4th one went at close to 100,000 KM's, I had to sadly move on. I've bitterly regretted having to do that all these years, sigh.

I also picked up on the bath towel on the bench so small parts don't run away like a toddler with a marble in its mouth. Enjoy spending time with you. Thanks for what you do. Looks like some nice roads. Here in Michigan nice roads are far a few between. But they are working on it. Nice spot ! It is beautiful. The terrain is very similar to northern Michigan.

    @@BrickHouseBuilds Follow up, I found a 1980 CX500 a few miles away, picked it up, been wrenching on it for the last 3 weeks or so, and I love the thing. I've owned several brand new bikes over the last 7 years, but this is my favorite. I also put a 14mm new master cylinder on, but I also put on a twin piston front brake caliper found on eBay, originally for a 1983 GL650I Silverwing. Bolt on replacement and improved the braking. I'm only up to about $1500 on the whole project including insurance and registration. This bike makes me want to jump on it and ride it across the country every time I think about it. Hopefully your Ben is running around with my Lola up there. Cx500‘s are an engineering masterpiece, I dispatched on one as a courier in London back in the early 80‘s and have also worked on them as a mechanic. The only things I changed were fork-springs and rear suspension as they were way too soft when adding luggage and a passenger and let’s face it, they’re probably well sagged down after some 40 odd years or so. Best greets from Düsseldorf 😉

    I became a despatch rider out of financial reasons. Previously I worked as a Honda Mechanic at Mochecks in Clapham. Parallel to that I was motocrossing on the weekends until my bank manager reminded me of of the state of my account! So despatching balanced things out within 3months.

    You really exercised that machine! What was you top speed? What do you sense is the best cruising speed? How many miles on that engine when you started restoration? How many miles to sort it out?

  • @BrickHouseBuilds

    @BrickHouseBuilds

    9 ай бұрын

    I had it up to 80 and didn't feel the need to go faster. Between 55 and 70 is where it's best. This isn't a restoration but rather just mechanical servicing to make it safe and reliable. It took probably 50 miles to get the suspension and brakes where I liked them.

    Really liking the revival of the CX500 - I've become enchanted with perhaps a dual sport conversion myself. One note about disc brakes - your comment on the pad drag on the disc because of a small master cylinder piston is not quite correct. The piston seal in the caliper is what retracts the piston not the master cylinder.

  • @BrickHouseBuilds

    @BrickHouseBuilds

    9 ай бұрын

    I would have to disagree. There is of course a seal but when you use the master cylinder to pressurize the fluid in the caliper you force it out, when you let go of the lever the fluid goes back into the master and therefore the vacuum draws the piston back

  • @darrenmarsden6790

    @darrenmarsden6790

    9 ай бұрын

    Fair enough. If that would be the case then you would have to apply an equal force to disengage the brake. The vacuum as you mention draws the fluid in the sealed system a little but it’s usually the master cylinder return spring. Anyhow not intending to be “that guy”. Info is readily available out there. Love your builds and have already followed your CX500 DS video. One fellow here in PDX did one in the old Honda CR red and blue combo. Nice!

    I've never ridden a CX, but I do like twins. Is that speedo stock? By that I mean is 80-85 MPH really the expected top speed? They were the work horse of couriers back in the day, I knew a guy who rode from Leeds to London and back (200 miles each way) on his at least once a week. I can't imagine pushing the engine that hard to sit at 80 would have made it the default courier's work bike. Perhaps the American top speed was different to the UK top speed? Perhaps that was normal when the CX was produced and I've just been spoilt by only riding large capacity machines from about 1996 onwards. Regardless I reached the point about 10 years ago where my attitudes changed such that if I was able to go fast, I was on the wrong sort of road, and instead I went looking for roads where fast riding was either not possible or idiotic. On a different subject, those were some great looking roads. Also having led a lot of rides, I always stressed that whilst we were all there to enjoy the ride, safety was your responsibility, if there's a junction with a hill leading up to it, as you showed, it was each persons responsibility to determine when it was safe to proceed.

    @jaidee9570 you can do 100 on these bikes. The engine will sit happy at 80 but the rider may not due to limited wind protection. My friend just did an iron butt in his last month
