Cutting Overgrown Dog Nails
In this video we show you what can happen when you do not keep up with cutting your dog's nails. Inconsistent nail clippings can lead to extreme discomfort for your pet if not tended to. In this specific case, the dog in this video was just recently rescued and brought to us immediately following her initial vet visit. The dog is now doing very well and is in a happy home. Thank you so much or watching! Enjoy the video :)

Thank you. With the pandemic etc, I have been trying to do Oliver's grooming myself. I have the regular clippers as well as the Dremel. I bought the Dremel because it is advertised to be so much less traumatic. I am glad I watched your video. His nails are longer than they should be because I have been afraid to cut too much, so I am doing small amounts frequently. Thanks for the help!

I do have a question: do you have a vid, or any pro tips, on what to do when the quick is growing OUT of the nail? I'm @ my wits end, & don't know what else to do with this! I'm talking about our mostly-yellow lab, who just turned 14 yesterday. Her nails are long, & I've been trying to get them under control for at least a year?, using groomers AND vets, & not much success overall. 😢😢😢

I love your channel!! Unfortunately, you haven't done any grooming videos on the one dog I have, a Sheltie! Unfortunately, there are no groomers open where I live, due to Corona, so I am going to groom him myself. He isn't matted, or knotted. He gets combed 30 to 45 minutes almost daily. I've seen your videos on nails, ears, shaping paws: check, check, and check, lol. But I can cut hair so I figure in a pinch, I will cut him too. If you get an opportunity, can you just cover some guidelines on shaping the chest mane, sides of face, and the size clippers to use on the back? Or recommend a good book on it? Thanks so much!

How can you tell that it's OK to cut a piece off? Especially with black nails. This dog's nails are so long -- my little knowledge .. it still says to me that the nail quick should be very close to the tip of the nail ... yet when you cut, it is not showing to be that close .. there's no "quicking", no blood, or painful reaction. Why is this? Thank you for all your videos!!

Just clip tip by tip. After every clip just touch or gently scratch the nail on the tip. If you feel it's hard, powdery, go on slightly clipping. Remember just clip TIP by TIP. The moment you notice it's soft, fleshy or like touching skin, STOP. Simple, eyes can cheat you but touching the nail TIP after every clipping you will know. I don't even bother to see the QUICK.

My dog's nails are SO long & Im getting nowhere because I'm just "tipping" them, out of fear? Is there a certain angle that you're cutting at to avoid bleeding? Surely the quick is at the end? No? I'm SO impressed! (But scared!)

Mr. Rudy, I have read and been told many different things about my Yorkie's nails. If I may please ask, how often I can cut his nails. They grow rather quickly. I have to wait at least thee weeks before he can have a bath due to skin problems. I adopted him at barley four pounds. He was grieving over his master and had gotten down to three pounds. It really effected hid hair and skin. I use Burt's Bees pad and nose lotion and all over his tummy too. Yes, his nails are black so I have watched your video numerous times.

I’m a professional dog groomer as well, your dogs nails are too long if u hear them clicking on the floors, I usually cut my dogs nails each week to keep them short. With black nails it’s always better to cut little by little and not stay on one nail for too long. Cat nail clippers are really convenient they just need to be sharp to not put a whole lot of pressure on the nail

How often would you repeat the trimming? My dogs nails are overgrown, groomer was trimming them every 3-4 weeks, but they grow faster and that frequency has ended up in overgrown nails, so it certainly won't trim back the quick to get them to a healthy size. This groomer has also neglected his ears, so I don't trust their advice anymore. I'm learning to do it at home, but don't know how often to trim his nails to get the quick back?

Can anywhere here please help me? I am so desperate. My husband and I took in a small dog (a Yorkie we think) and he has become part of our family. his nails are black and overgrown. So I tried clipping his nails with a clipper that has a safety type thing on it that you can twist down so that only so much nail can be clipped off. Before I tried it on my dog, Ollie, I practiced on a toothpick and it literally took off the teeny tiniest tip of this toothpick I'm talking like only the top of the point at the very end and no more. So I clipped his first nail one time and like the toothpick it barely took anything off and so I did one more pass on the same nail and it cut his quick. I felt so awful. The next day I tried it one more time on the next nail and did the first clip and I looked for everything all the videos said and felt like this nail could def handle a second pass...and it couldn't . Again. So I don't understand... I watch this video and there are huge pieces being taken off not once but twice on some nails. I cannot stress how tiny these pieces are. Why is this happening? I've been told that they're just too overgrown and that we are just going to have to do them one tiny tip at a time maybe once every week until they get down to normal so that's the only reason I haven't made an appointment to take him to be done because I know that it's not going to take just one time to do it. So I kind of wanted to learn so is there something I could be doing wrong or is this dog's nails just different and he has a longer quick? Maybe I should just take him to a vet and have them do it for the very first time and have them show me? Can anyone please let me know what they think thank you so much.
