Melissa!!!! I was Terrified to see what was inside! So relieved nothing was in there especially since my beauty blender is black so there could be mold growing on it and I don't even know!

You can clean and disinfect your beauty blender with a little bit of oil (extra virgin olive oil or any cooking oil) and a good amount of dish detergent (1 part oil and 2 part detergent). Mix the 2 in a container and soak your beauty blender, along with any other makeup brushes in the solution. Then take them out the container and place them under running warm water while squeezing all the makeup that has been built up on the blender or brushes. It will look BRAND NEW after doing this and will be free from any bacteria.

if in doubt, chlorine bleach is brutally effective at sterilizing and cleaning. why would you use vegetable oil, and where did you get that from? o.0' it might help dissolve fatty/waxy residues, but so does dishwashing soap. (or bleach)

The main reason these sponges mold is because some people put their damp sponges away where they cannot dry thoroughly such as a makeup bag or even a sponge case. They need to be in the open air to avoid mold growing. I've had the same Beauty Blender for longer than I'd like to admit and it doesn't have a mark on it nor any stains and I don't get breakouts.

The body of mold is typically invisible to the eye; the part we see is the reproductive structure, so it's possible that there actually was mold in that sponge. There wouldn't be any reproductive structure on the inside of the sponge; that's why it looks clean.

Exactly! That's why I'm still suspicious after this vid. Whenever one of my grandparents just cuts off a moldy oeice off their bread (not that it happenes often but sometimes it just happens you know), I keep telling them that it's still moldy, you just can't see it!

The black spot is mildew and the reason that it is only on the outside is because the sponge is nice and dense and there is little oxygen to help the mildew grow.

If you're worried about mould on sponges, after you do your makeup, wash the sponge and blow dry it... Any sponge that's getting wet all the time and not drying properly, can grow a mould of sorts It's like washing couch pillows... you put them through the washing machine and then dryer so the middle is getting dry just as well as the rest of it is

It's not the product that will make it moldy. It's the fact that its constantly wet if your using it every day. It's just something that needs to be replaced periodically if it's your go to.

And of course, now I feel even better that it wasn't growing anything.

oh my, if you wash it everyday of course it's gonna grow mold! if you add moisture to it every single day, it's gonna be perfect for bacteria and mold. Just get two or three and use another one every day. then there's enough time for the sponge to dry and the mold to die off. BTW, you have bugs everywhere on your body and it's pretty normal. e.g. in your lashes, you have little bugs living happily ever after because it's moist and warm and lots of nourishment.

I had bought a real techniques sponge....this exact same one and it came with an orange hard case with it to "store it in" and it had venting holes in the sides of it so I figured 1-its made to be put in there for storage,2-it has vent holes so it should def be fine, and 3- I mean why would they sell it with that if your not supposed to put it into there after using?? Right? Hahahha nope,I used my blender....put it into the hard vented case and when I went to use it the next day....it had black on it just like this one! It had nothing on the inside but just black on the outside. I'm thinking that putting it into that hard case made it grow fungus on the outside layer of the sponge! But I just don't understand why they would sell the case with it if u can't put it in there damp after using. I don't like leaving my blenders out in the open due to dust and anything that may come into contact with it so I figured it was genius to have a little Case to fit in perfectly. Ha! Nope! They must have made it just to put in the case dry,but kinda dumb if u ask me...maybe if your traveling..yea put it in there while traveling but it's just kinda dumb I think. Anyone else have this issue or think that it's stupid to sell the sponge with the case but if u put ur damp blender into it it will mold on you!?! Idk, i just think it's pointless! Needless to say I threw out the case for it(and the sponge Ofcourse😉)lol just thought I would share.

+Iida Elena absolutely. I let it dry everyday. Do you use a makeup sponge daily? How do you care for yours?

I use exactly the same sponge. I don't do anything special. I wash it every week and let air dry. I also keep it away from my other products after it's fully dried

That is mold, it is just growing on tje outside probably because it's still wet when you're putting it down after using and cleaning.

Where did you store your blender when it was drying out and not in use? Just curious :-) so many people keep theirs in different places.

Just a quick note to let you know that real techniques advise you only use your sponge for 3 months before you should get a new one.

Well...yeah, sponges are gonna collect mold and crap. We clean it, but then we leave it out in the open, or inside a darkened cupboard. You kept it for a really long time and kept good care, but yeah, it's GONNA collect fungus/bacteria. That's a guarantee.
