Cutting in an Asphalt Milling Path & Car Port

Here I help improve access from a client's driveway to small farm area across his yard by putting in a recycled asphalt milling pathway that they can drive their side-by-side or tractor on. the asphalt millings allow for a great packed base that can be easily maintained during all seasons of the year. After installing the pathway, the client asked if I could do the same for under the carport!
Equipment Used:
Skid Steer/CTL: 2021 Bobcat T66
Tractor: 2019 Kubota BX23s
Camera: GoPro HERO 7

    Kind of refreshing seeing an operator get off the machine and working by hand. Makes a huge difference and less apt to cause damage. Nice job!

    Another great video. I’m retired, but still do small jobs like your driveway project. I’m also a firm believer in using recycled asphalt (millings). My go-to setup is the L-Series Kubota in front of a rear blade and box scraper. Hard to beat in tight places and where the border needs to be spot on. That product also stays in place much longer than compacted base or shale on steep driveway applications.

    I used to be a contractor for Comcast. That conduit was buried way to shallow. It was also to big. 2" conduit isn't used for coax pulls under yards. 2" conduit is used for pulls going from the tap on the distribution line to the ped. That was a very lazy and unprofessional install. But, I also didn't see any locate marks. Should have called 811. Even though you weren't digging that deep it's your responsibility as a contractor to get the locates done.

    Do you find it difficult to push dirt with the bucket of the sub compact tractor and make the ground level? Every time I try it I feel like my tractor just starts digging in and lifts up, creating a wide hole basically

  • @CarlsonSonLandscapingLLC

    @CarlsonSonLandscapingLLC

    It can be pretty tough to level hard or rocky ground with the bucket. Takes a lot of practice and manipulation of the bucket edge to make sure you don't under/over dig. I have definitely gotten better at it, but as you say, there will still be times where the bucket will dive into the ground.

    tracked machines do a lot better job of grading compared to anything with wheels. It just how they move across the ground that helps get that smooth finish.

  • @CarlsonSonLandscapingLLC

    @CarlsonSonLandscapingLLC

    It depends on your subsoils and drainage. On this job, the base below the top soil was very hard (as can be seen in the video) and there was no standing or moving water in the areas the path was being placed. If the subsoils are hard and dry, then it should be fine to layer on millings.

  • @mbikerun5

    As I dig the area it's definitely a bit wet at the top, dryer as I get down...I'll have to evaluate it more once I'm done clearing the area. Thank you for such a fast response! If I decide to put gravel down now then I will likely add millings to the top later on. That driveway in your video looked great!

    Just curious, what was the purpose of watering the millings?

  • @mikel9567

    @mikel9567

    Жыл бұрын

    Helps them bind together. Even though the asphalt is cold, there are what we call "fines" in it. The fines is like the dust of the product, be it gravel or asphalt. If you want something to bind, you want fines in it. getting the fines moist will help them adhere and lock in the product thereby making a solid surface. Make no mistake, asphalt millings aren't a replacement for a properly paved road surface, but they can provide a solid and stable surface that holds up better than just gravel. I work for a county road dept and we used asphalt millings to "pave" a road in our pit. We drive dump trucks, vactors, loaders, etc on it and it holds up great. We give our millings away to county residents free of charge, so if it's something you want check with your municipality. I'll bet you can get them for free from them or paving companies.
