In the final episode of this series I cut the bespoke resin desk top to size, and then set about the rather lengthy process of sanding, filling and finishing. I hope this series of videos gives you a good insight into the time and effort that goes into producing a live edge slab / epoxy resin commission. I am absolutely delighted with how this project has turned out and the client is very happy indeed😀.
As ever, thank you so much for your continued support in my disability woodworking adventures. Best Wishes, Leo Winstanley

    Absolutely gorgeous Leo, and the desktop isn't bad either 🤣 I think I'd have gone for fitting a small piece to the wall, bringing the wall out flush with the bit jutting out in the right hand corner, that way you would have avoided cutting a section out of the top, but I suppose that's what the customer wanted. As for finishing, doesn't matter which way you do it, as long as you and the customer are happy with it 👍 Agree with the alloy inserts, especially if going into hardwood, they can break very easily even in softwood!

    Thanks Barry and yes you’re right, that’s what the customer wanted in regards to fitting up against the wall. I’ve kept the cut parts though so I could if needed repurpose it as a table 👍👍

    Please don't take either of these observations as negatives against you, because I assure you, they aren't meant to demean you. Please, wear a dust mask when sanding the epoxy, especially when working indoors! And also, with your router, remove the battery when handling it like that (unless the battery was dead, but even then...!). Great work, the wood looks amazing (I have some pippy oak myself but I'm nowhere near brave enough as you are, so it is just sitting my my shed!). I really enjoy your content, good to see a Northerner on KZread - there isn't enough!

    Thanks Jamie, tbh I usually wear either my Trend face mask or Trend Airshield, but haven’t been recently. I have my workshop air scrubber on, air quality monitor and also M class extraction through my Festool sander. Air quality readings are fine so I’ve been omitting the face mask on the polishing grits. Just out of interest, what part of the video are you referring to in regard to how I’m handling the router? Can’t quite figure out what part you mean 🤔👍

  • @JamieK-G

    @@Hand-i-Craft Fair enough, if you're happy with the air quality when sanding then that's good in my books! I mean at approx 19:30/19:45 when it looks like the router bit protrudes from the guide bush. I appreciate that it's highly unlikely that you will accidentally press the button to turn it out, but my heart was in my mouth all the same!

    @@JamieK-G Ah I see what you’re saying pal. On that Trend model you have to press two buttons one after the other to start it up. The odds of doing that without intention is almost impossible but I appreciate it might not look good in the video so will take that on board for future content 👍👍

    Thanks Phil and a good question. I guess it has improved my self belief that if I can perform to a decent standard in very demanding conditions then I can cope better back home in my workshop. In regards to the show I wasn’t either surprised or had it nailed down. It’s a bit strange as you don’t really get much time to look at other contributors builds. You get a few minutes obviously once they call time but I was shattered from my build so I didn’t look at anything in detail. Watching the show was literally me looking at the other builds like anyone else. I was absolutely delighted for Nathanael, great guy and a very bright future ahead of him 👍👍

    Love the videos. Thanks for posting them. Do you go up to 3000grit on the wood as well as the epoxy? Or just the epoxy?

  • @Hand-i-Craft

    @Hand-i-Craft

    7 ай бұрын

    Just the resin pal to 3000. I usually go to 240 with the wood. You can polish the wood as well if you wanted to, but I find it gives the wood an ‘artificial’ look which personally I’m not a fan of.
