Hello Mr Shack. Ever since i moved to florida and got a job as a maintenance man, KZread has been acting strangely. 😁My youtube is _usually_ filled with PC gaming, astrophysics, geology, Let's plays, drama channels and anime. But now...I'm getting documentaries on the invention of the buzz saw and random handyman wood-working classes. I can see how this handy work is going to turn out. It creeps up on you. I was a desk jockey, but by the end of the year, I'm likely going to know how to make small household repairs, and fix the shit i break. Or break what i try to fix. One of those... I wasn't really going anywhere with this...Just figured I'd share what the algo is bringing you. 😆 It really does try.

I just watched this so decided to see what my one could cut. I don't know what type of wood it's because it's just a scrap packing strip that came with an appliance but it cut through 16.86mm wood, 100% 6mm/s 6 pass. I've only CT ply and hardboard before so the glue makes it harder but I was impressed with the detail of the cut on a tiny bunny and squirrel

Cool. Yea, some solid woods cut really well.

I have some Cottonwood and am going to try it. It is a relatively softwood and should cut well. Years ago (1974) I made a butcher block table (quite nice one) for my wife out of Cottonwood. It is still in my kitchen and used daily...made out of sugar maple I would not be able to move it. I have 10 and 20W D1s. Enjoy your videos....continue the good work ...by the way you need a CNC.

There is a regulator on the front of the table for the lasers, less than 10 psi. I have a video showing the parts needed to dry and regulate at the machine

This is cool. I'm watching the speed of the laser module. Do you think the new 40W module would be a bonus to have?

I imagine that it will be faster but until I test one, I think it will be limited on depth of cut due to focusing.

I started use 3D printers and CNC machines and lasers about 3 years ago. That is when I started using metric. One reason I like Lightburn is one click and I can go from metric to imperial measurement and back.

You have to understand. For most of us, imperial is just as easy to read as metric is for yall. But like he said for the machines and such we end up using both.

Hey man, great video. Where do you keep your secondary focus adjustment on your D1 by default? For example, when engraving, is the secondary adjuatment set to be as far away from the material as it can be? The when cutting, you adjust for the depth of the material?

Just run it on 0 unless I need it for cutting

I have been thinking to use the cut adjustment. So it won't distort the image being closer to it?

It helps get through thicker material.

I just started running my d1 pro 20w. I’m curious on the right side focus of the different material. When you move that down to cut wouldn’t it affect the engraving as well? Make it go darker or deeper?

It brings the laser out of focus slightly which results in a darker burn.

Excellent work. You are running laser without yellow protection piece. Is it ok just remove, or do you need to make some other modifications?

It is for eye protection, I use enclosures with it built in. Personal decision, I also wear my glasses continually

I went over them in the video. 100mm/s at 100% on engrave. 6mm/s at 100% x5 for cut.

How long did that take to cut out. Not the engrave just the cut. Take care and stay safe.

Every material and machine is unique but typically I run 6mms with air assist. 8 or more passes to cut 3/4 material.

@@TheClackShack I asked a question about cutting MDF in the xTool facebook group and I guy answered saying that he can barely cut it with a 100w laser. But here you are cutting hardwood with a 20w laser. I just need to get a rough idea of where to start so I can make some cuts on a test grid.

Do a drop test,MDF is actually harder to cut than solid wood due to the glue. I cut 1/4 MDF with diodes all the time. 6mm/s with air, I do a drop test to determine how many passes are needed. Also, cheat the focus down for better result.

Very low, I tune it while cutting. Less than 10 psi on the regulator

Shouldn't you engrave first at the normal focus and then lower it to cut?

No, cypress burns really light when in focus. Being out of focus makes the engrave darker. Personal preference

Depends on the wood. I would do some small circles and try some drop tests. Drop the focus down also

Curious if this would cut 1/2 birch ply or would it be need more passes? Prob 6-8 for a decorative cutting board or birch ply would be too thick, I don’t think I’ll be able to find Cypress in my area. Want to jump on Mother’s Day gift for my wife and mother in law ??

@@jeffmath2411 , the glue in ply can cause the material to be harder to cut. It has an easier time with natural wood.

@@jeffmath2411 I just tried cutting a small circle in 9mm plywood with my d1 pro 10w. At 6 passes it didn’t do it, so I cranked it up to 10 passes and ended up burning the wood and melting the laser shield

What would you charge for that board?
