Cutie Mark Laboratories - KNOW YOUR MYTHS "Explained" - Mythological Creatures
Ойын-сауық
Manticores, cockatrices, dragons, changelings, and windigos. This show has a thing for bringing up creatures of mythology to fill roles in episodes, often as antagonists. But how accurate are they portrayed by the writers? Turns out: not as accurately as you'd be led to believe.
"Explained" is a series produced by Cutie Mark Laboratories that takes questions and phenomena related to Equestria, and uses science and logic to find an answer for them.

On the changling part, Queen Chrysalis ex-changed herself for Cadance. It is when Twilight gets suspicious about her that she realizes who the imposter is and frees the real Cadance.

For the Windigo, I don't think one could talk about cannibalism when the main characters are all herbivores. Even then vary few creatures are even hinted at being carnivorous.

sorta? in the show, their all considered ponies, but just a different kind. by show standards, it's like a race system; they look different, come from different places, and have wildly different cultures, but are still considered all the same at the end of the day. best example of this elsewhere is in steven universe, how gems are all different, with (probable, aka not confirmed) some duplicates of the same gem (different personalities and looks, of course), but they are still all considered gems, no matter what gem they are specially. hopefully i cleared something up :V

well this may sound a little creepy but what if the windagos actually were ponies who ate other ponies? My point the ponies in the story were having a problem with famine so it is possible some resorted to cannibalism and became windagos and where not attracted by there hate but by them and were just simply trying to get a meal and because the ponies live in such a perfect world didn't even think of the possibility of cannibalism when they recorded the event in history books.

+Corbin West 4. An extremely frustrating enemy from Fallout: New Vegas. 10. I don't mind them on Twitter since they help with searching. 11. It's a joke because I've ended up building up Science Pony as a Spike hater. 14. That's the joke. 20. Thank you. 23. I'm just a heavy sleeper and very groggy in the mornings. 25. I enjoyed doing ERBParodies stuff back then but I cringe so badly seeing it now. 28. I'm not the biggest Donkey Kong fan (DK64 is the only Donkey Kong game I outright liked), and I got Returns because people had been hyping it up as something new, except I discovered it had the same mechanics and style as the original Country, just with a couple new minor changes and a new plot. It was like Donkey Kong's version of New Super Mario Bros. So not only was it a game I didn't really like, it was a disappointment because people were hyping me up.

Something to note about the Windigos: Keep in mind that we aren't even seeing them through the show directly; we're seeing them through a thousand-plus-year-old FABLE told in the show, via a homogenized play for everyone. There could easily be a 'true' variant of the myth that places them more in line with the original folklore of the Wendigo, but ponified. It's just not told during Hearthswarming, because it's a family occasion and Celestia did a little polishing to make it foal-friendly.

True. Even in the context of the series the Hearth's Warming Eve pageant was a children's show. So if, say, fighting between the unicorns and the pegasi was what actually messed up the weather and the resulting mini-ice age caused pony eating monsters who were cold-dependent to descend on them...well that story might be a little on the hard-core side.
One thing that always struck me as inaccurate about the cockatrice is that, while in some versions of the myth it does turn people to stone, in pretty much every version I've ever heard it actually has venom so potent that it is radiated out of its vision and causes living things to burst into flame. Even striking it from behind wasn't safe, as the poison would travel up the sword as you touched it, killing you. Of course, if Fluttershy, Twilight, and the CMC spontaneously combusted as soon as they got near the cockatrice, we'd have a pretty short series.
For those asking about discord he isn't based of of anything from mythology he was based off of the charicter Q from startrek . They even got jhon delancy the man who played Q to do his voice. But if you were to classify him he would technically be an elamental since he is the living imbodiment of a force of nature, that force being chaos which is one hlf of the natural balance
The changelings do share one aspect: replacement. Both types wish to replace another being, albeit for different reasons. To me, their makeup always seemed more like a mash-up of various unseelies, some of which can be described as partially insectoid, with insects so they could be a proper kid friendly faceless army yet still be cool rather than revolting.

This was amazing. I could not possibly be hitting the Subscribe button any harder. Do not stop being this entertaining and awesome, doing so would simply be a crime against nature.
Accuracy is everything. You seem to understand that as I do. That is why I can't stop watching your videos. Rock on.
Did anyone also note the New Age/Eastern religious reference in "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep" when Luna created a shared dream including all of Ponyville? Instead of using what might be considered 'normal' magic effects (ie wavy glow), what spouted from Princess Luna's horn were individual strings of white light connecting her to each pony, in a manner which closely resembled the so-called "Silver Chord" which is said to connect the soul to the body during out of body experiences
"Alicorn" is the substance that a unicorn's horn is made of, or in some versions could be made into...
Like you said, changelings are the offspring of some mythological being that have been exchanged for a human child. In fiction, the most popular exchange would be a faerie (using the old-fashioned spelling here) child for a human child. A simple illusion or disguise spell, much like the one Queen Chrysalis used to impersonate Cadence, would cover up any visual differences. The offspring would be nearly unnoticeable aside from small details like food preferences or general moods. It would be similar to how Queen Chrysalis took Princess Cadence's place, with the only details showing that it wasn't really her being her magic color and her attitude. Twilight knew her before, unlike the rest of the Mane 6. This would make it easier for her to notice that something wasn't right. I'm not trying to argue, I just rarely get the chance to talk mythology with anybody :)

Yeah; at about 2 AM I decided to see how many Littlepip pictures I could throw in. I blame my obsession with Fo:E.
Iron Will's first appearance in the hedge maze. The Minotaur was depicted to be guarding a maze and this made me geek out when i saw it.
I love how his oc in the opening is using magic next to a no magic sign.
Fun fact: Changelings were used to explain the behavior of mentally disabled children. Parents thought their children were acting strange because they had been replaced with fairies.
Dude you are AWSOME I never realized twilight actually died
I loved this video and by all means I agree but I'll say this to make myself feel better ... I love mythology ! And they did get some wrong like the changelings and this was the best for the show like you said and I must say I really like most of their interpretations like the changelings and windigoes (not spelled right I know) :) I just had to say that..
man I like you adding the lil pip pics b (lotso 3 letter words)
LITTLEPIP!!! you made my day.
The changelings being succubi is very clear. I've called them that several times, but I did not realise that they oddly sound more like what Windigoes are supposed to be, with the eternal hunger thing and all. All the while only barely being related to changelings. the MLP Windigoes seem to have picked the name purely as some kind of pun but are easily the worst offenders for being hardly related to a mythical creature. I'd like to see a video like this done again including ALL the mythical creatures. Because there are so dang many right now.
I LOVE this one.😄😄😄😄😁😎.more of this please.
I love how Spike is number 11 on the list of things you hate.
Is it knit-picky to knit-pick a knit-picker? You representation of a "wendego" was actually a "draegloth", a half-fiend/ half-drow from the Forgotten Realms D&D setting. Just saying.

Yeah, I'm a f***ing geek and proud of it.
The shows writers took huge liberties when it came to dragons, specifically referring to the concept that a Dragon alters in size relative to the wealth its accumulated (which begs the question of how the dragons system of ageing even operates). This idea didn't spawn out of any historical evidence from any cultures, but more likely from Tolkiens rendition of the dragon as seen in the Hobbit. In some cultures the dragon represented not only as a force of nature, but as sin itself. Greed was one of the traits heavily emphasis in later fantasy, something which became a common interpretation. To be honest, there is no one path you can follow when it comes to accurately representing a dragon. They vary widely from culture to culture, even to the point where we wouldn't recognize them as anything resembling a dragon. Certainly the ability to breathe fire wasn't a very common trait. While some of the decisions the writers made might not be very accurate at all, the dragon is simply too multicultural to actually pin a single rendition.

Exactly; that's why I didn't try to talk about them. I brought them up briefly because I had a feeling if I didn't, people would ask about them, since they're one of the most common creatures in the show aside from...well, ponies.
@lalalachris

ZeInquizzitor Yea, really depends on the origin of the folklore. Most Western versions portray dragons as greedy sinful monsters. In Eastern Asian cultures, dragons are usually portrayed as serpents with a reason to exist...such as to protect a body of water, or to relinquish a piece of wisdom. Then there are some other cultural origins (like India, etc.) that I'm not too familiar with, but it just goes to show that there are a lot of different interpretations of dragons.I do think the MLP version is really derived from more recent lore, as you mentioned.
From my knowledge those r the only mythical beasts in the show and I saw EVERY FREAKIN EPISOde. Thank u nextflix
sirens are supposed to be a vulture with a woman's head
For me personally in the stuff that I have seen or read typically dragons are usually depicted as old and wise creatures that helps the main character in his or her journey to fight the main villain of the story because they have years and years of knowledge that they only have. If you've played the game called Lunar The Silver Star or any of it's remakes you'll see the way I usually saw how dragons were portrayed.
I like the video it's just there are different types of changelings in different mythologies. Some changelings are known to feed on the parents love for their children and shapeshift.
ALL THE FALLOUT EQUESTRIA REFERENCES

Also, the Windigos might have been modeled more after the White Walkers from A Song of Ice and Fire than anything else. lol.
Now I wanna see them tackle some Japanese myths. Some of those can be a little difficult, especially the ones that are shared with China and Korea.
Yeah, I think Wendigos from myths are only a slight basis for the wind-like creatures in the Hearth Warming Eve episode, hence why they are called by a different name, Windigos.
There there are different kinds of changelings, not just the one you're thinking about. One type does, in fact, feed on the parents' love for the child it replaced, and all do take on the appearance of the replaced child. There are also tales of adults being replaced, likely an explanation for the sudden onset of psychological illnesses, like Alzheimer. I was actually rather impressed at how accurate the show portrayed them.
1:11 THE FALLOUT EQUESTRIA MEMES ARE SO REAL!!!!!
that littlepip :P shes so silly with her science level at 100
Well, from where I'm from there is a legend called the windago. No one knew what it looked like. But during camping trips it would lure in native men and carry them away. It would fly with the man and fly so fast that the man in its grasp would burn to ashes.
I can see the connection to succubi, but besides mythology, you should consider science fiction, where changeling has been used to refer to something like the creatures in MLP. The examples I can think of are Star Trek: Deep Space 9, Babylon 5, and Star Wars Episode II.
I have a little head canon (That a bunch of other Brony's probably have to and has been addressed) That Pegasi would be the roman and greek part of equestrian history. Think about it. Rainbow had a grape necklace during the best night ever and that golden thingy hanging off her ear. Cloudsdale also has the cloudaseaum and their architecture is mostly white. Not to mention in Hearths Warming Eve the Pegasi were basically the military.
actually a lot of mythology does say that the changelings do feed on the love of the mother who is none the wiser
I like it. Pegasus was Greek, created by Zues from clouds. And Poseidon was believed to have created horses so I think using mythology is a good idea.
I actually thought of the Windigos more like Maiar from the Tolkien mytho. But I was reading the Silmarillion at the time, so that was a sort of influence. .3.
I like you work
How am I gonna sleep at 9:54 PM!
I saw 2 mythical Creatures on your List, A Unicorn (Littlepip) and Pegasus (Fluttershy)
The Windego (How ever you spell it) Reminds me of the Final boss from Bloodrayne. But instead of never having a full belly, and when it ate it grew. If you tried to hit the final boss and you miss its heart, it grew in size and got stronger. Or at least that's what I think I remember, Cause I haven't played it ion so long ;u;...
So, Much, Little Pip! You are now dubbed awesome review pony
Nice use of littlepip bro. Make a vid on fallout equestria
I feel like for changelings, they weren't trying to reference the myth, but trying to show they were shape-shifters. It doesn't all lead back to mythology, though it is a good point.
OMG!!!! That face at 0:12 !!!!!
I do believe that the changlings shape and use of green fire when they transform is a referance to a spiecies of firefly that's females impersanate the flashing patterns of a diffrent spiecies of firefly to attract a male of the spiecies that they then feed on when it comes looking for a mate
This was actually very helpful for me! (Don't ask why)
4:35 is anyone thinking what im thinking ... UNTIL DAWN!

I noticed my wall of text comment used to make a point in the video. I for the most part wouldn't say the writers got the creatures wrong, but rather that it was modified to fit the setting and story. Also, that "chicken headed lizard" that was "wrong" looked a lot more like a rooster headed dragon to me (being male, and having a very draconian lower body, with dragon wings). Fluttershy may have dumbed down the explanation, but the creature itself seemed to match your description exactly.
@RLYoshi
10 жыл бұрын
True; I just took it for what Fluttershy said, because since she's an animal caretaker, I thought she'd describe it accurately. I do admit while the chicken/rooster part is up in the air, it did look like it had a dragon's body. And yeah, in general, the creatures weren't "wrong" so much as they were modified to fit, hence the double meaning of my speech at the end.
In a season four episode bats, pinkie pie wondered if flutterbat was gonna eat her
Rlyoshi that chimera tiger was a sabertooth tiger!
Cerberus and Tartarus as well. Tirek, too.
Ahuizotl would have been interesting to see in here.
Changelings has been associated with the Fae and Faeries, and if you read up on those, you'll find a better match.
The fallen nephalarpyrampus is apex predator of monsterous creatures.
changelings: i dont think they ment chageling rather "shapeshifters" but changelings just ssound better as to feeding on love... THEY HAD TO MAKE SOME SORT OF PLOT
Omg so many LittlePips!
actually mantacorers are simply animals that are mixed together so that means that any form mantacore is still a mantacore

Anyone who read Percy Jackson knows exactly why I freaked OUT when I watched It's About Time....
It wasn't that Derpy had a voice, it was that it was the wrong voice (changing the eyes was too far)
I'd say that on some cases it has more to do with the crowd...although it dosn't really explain how they can get away with having a hell and just sating it's Tartarus since that's probably just as big a shock in Grease...or maybe not consudering how many cultures are far more emerced in thier myths than we are and would proribably find alot less Taboo
And the sirens
You forgot 2 very important mythological creatures that have been seen in every episode of the series. Unicorns and Pegasi
The chicken dragon is a polish legend and was called bazyliszkek.

are you going to make more about mythical mlp creatures
I like this. kudos.
Your description of the origin of changelings is in fact the origin of elves.
i am doing this for the science fair at my school i think becuz it is a really cool study
I think hasbro did a great on discord when they got his name discord is the God of chaos in Latin well done hasbro well done
Well, changelings would change to look like a human child, and you could argue that they fed off of the love of a parent. You could even day that fairies are insect-like due to their small size, wings, and possibly appearance (see Deoxys in Harry Potter for insect-like fairies). There aren't exactly that many myths about full-grown changelings, but it may be possible for them to feed off of other types of love. Overall, I'd say they're more of a 7/10 interpretation, but it makes sense for the writers to make those alterations in order to fit the narrative.
