FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1) Where do you come from?
I was raised by both my foxy parents and the extra milk-bottle-feeding-hooman in a warm house. When they couldn't take care of me any more (my mom passed away) I got to live in my forever home with my two most favourite hoomans! We take long walks at the sand drifts, I get lots of living insects, meat and treats to eat, and I have infinite hours of play-time with other hoomans, woofers and meow-meows.
2) Why do I live with hoomans?
I come from a long line of bred-in-captivity foxes (over 30 years). These days considerably less fennecs are still wild catch and sold as pets. Most of my wild relatives are trophy hunted; putting a lot of stress on our population. So, please, don't be sad that I live with my hoomans. I like to not have to fight for my home and food, and that I don't have to share my bed, toys, couch, treats, puzzles and sandbox with other fennecs.
If you ever get interested in getting a fennec make sure the breeder is 100% reliable and fair to the foxes!
3) What it's like to live with me?
My hooman grandmother said that I'm like having human triplets who are about 2 years old. I'm not sure if that's a compliment, though... I'm a full time job, so forget about going anywhere if you own me (14 years long). Without the right care I will stay wild minded and bite you until you bleed. I get scared easily if not well socialized and I am destructive when bored. I am messy, loud, a loner, moody, troublesome and a tiny excavator.
4) So how do you take care of me?
My diet should contain 90% meat and insects, and 10% fruit and vegetables. I need many insects, like wax-worms, super worms, phoenix worms, dubia roaches and locusts. The meat should be low on Retinol (Vitamin A, which is in fat), and contain enough Taurine (can be found in chicken/turkey hearts) and Calcium (as in uncooked, minced bones). Vegetables and fruit should not contain too much carbohydrates or belong to the nightshade family. Grain, flour and other starchy ingredients like tapioca should be avoided as it contains no nutritious value. Dog and cat kibble is yuck and unhealthy! I only like the Saharan cuisine.
I don't like busy city's, small apartments or many hoomans. I like a large FOX PROOF house with a fenced garden where I can run run run, sandbox for dig dig dig, heating and lots of toys, insects and food puzzles.
5) What about my fox language?
I speak another language than woofers and meow-meows, and can make up to more than 40 calls and sounds. I produce more decibels than club party music. When I flatten my ears, wag my fluffy tail and even tremble or shake, it means that I am no threat to you and I am excited to play! I even laugh out loud when I'm very happy! I like to scream, which means I'm happy to see you. And I like to scream when I want to be alone. I can bark too!
6) Can I be trained like a dog?
I'm not easily trained. If you like to try you should be a stay-at-home-hooman and watch my every moment 24/7. That way you can put me near the litter box when I need to go, and maybe I will even use it. If you have any treats, I can sit for you. However, I'd rather train my hoomans to clean pee from ... uh... my couch!
7) My cat bell
Although my ears are HUGE, they aren't extra sensible to high or loud noises. They actually contain blood vessels which widen to dissipate heat and help me cool down. My paws are floofy to protect me from hot desert sand, and I walk around with no sound. That's why I need the tiny bell sometimes. Otherwise clumsy hoomans will stumble over me! I'm too speedy and stealthy for them!!

When I first watched the video I was thinking "Djinn is really interested in whatever is in that box!" Then I saw what was inside... 🤣 Of course, Djinn's interest made perfect sense. I'm sure he *knew* what was in there long before you opened it.

First, he heard them crawling around. And then, he imagined tasting them by chewing the box (slow Hooman could not open the box fast enough).
I love foxee. Technically a canine, tempermentally a cat, totally otherworldly!

It gets worse when you know that sometimes Djinn caries them around, losing them in the living room. Alive... And weeks later you'll find a huge beetle!

I would definitely find it hard to have a pet that eats live bugs or grubs. 😖 Their lunch would probably get thrown at them like "EW! TAKE IT!"

On the other hand, canned cat food is an assault on the sinuses.
Kids are growing so fast !! Yesterday baby Djinn was so excited, so vocal, climbing on the box, digging the box, eager to get the worms ! Now, he tries calmly to open it, waits politely that Mom invites him to jump into that box. Today, Djinn has become (overnight ?) a well-mannered little boy ("man" is for to-morrow 😊).

He is so cute. I found your site by accident and subscribed. Foxes are one of my favorite animals as well as cheetahs and owls. I read the frequently asked questions in the description and really appreciate that because I was wondering some of the same things. I have 4 cats at home and they are a handful by themselves. I got to meet a fennec fox once at a wildlife show and she let us hold her. I knew what a fennec fox was prior to that show. She had a bunch of other animals as well but the fennec, honey bear, owl, and even the alligator were some of my favorites. She let us pet or hold some of the animals including the alligator (the gator was young and his mouth was taped shut for safety) and I got to hold the fox as well as the honey bear. Where I live in FL we have a lot of different wild birds such as hawks, great blue herons, sandhill cranes (they look almost identical to the heron except they have red feathers on their heads instead of the dark blue or black that the heron has), Canadian geese, storks, egrets, ducks, anhingas, cardinals, hummingbirds and more. Near the cemetery where my dad is buried (he is at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery) there are peacocks in the wild as well and saw my first one about a year ago. I love seeing the different wildlife. I even saw 2 young raccoons where we live and some people have said that they have seen otters but I haven’t. Our duck population has exploded since several of them had ducklings that survived. The previous ones all were killed by the hawks but these latest batches survived. We also have turtles and flying fish in our ponds and when Hurricane Ian flooded our neighborhood you could see the fish and turtles swimming in the streets for several days because we got over 2 feet of rain. Thankfully no flooding with Nicole! Thanks for the great videos of your fennec fox!

I love the fact that they eat worms and insect just like reptiles! I love watching my lizards hunt little worms and dubias. Maybe fennec will be my first mammal! I have blue and gold macaw that also enjoys insects from time to time xD.

Ohhh yes he is! He starts jumping and reaching for the package with his front paws. We always hide a treat in the package when we're opening it, so he gets all excited every time :))

I understand. It would be very different for us if we didn't had Djinn during these times. Since he likes being indoors where it's dry and warm, it makes it easier for us too to stay at home.

How hard is it to raise a fennec fox? We have cats will they get along?
Quick questions, I might get a fennec fox in the future (High chance) I would like to know, what are those insects? Does it cost a lot? I know they eat insects, etc. but is there a danger for them to eat those (Can the insects be infected by a smaller parasite or carry something dangerous?). Because otherwise I will try to get it something else to eat, if there's no danger then I will gladly give his/her favorite food.

If you buy insects from the store (I get mine from a reptile store), then they are perfectly safe to feed. You can buy morioworms, wax worms, crickets, dubia roaches, silkworms, Phoenix worms, locusts etc. We are a little bit cautious with Djinn eating wild insects, because of the possibility of parasites (like you mention). But (reptile) store bought insects are perfect. Otherwise try freeze dried insects. I recommend feeding insects instead of leaving them out of the diet, because of the health benefits.
I didn't know they were using worms instead of styrofoam peanuts. Djinn seems to appreciate this more "sustainable" initiative.
