Cutest Baby Seal Ever Disrupts Rescue

Wally and Naude from Ocean Conservation Namibia had a slow day at Cape Cross with only 2 rescues done. They were feeling a little despondent, but all that changed during the second rescue. While they were busy freeing a tiny pup from some binding material, another little pup approached them curiously and would not leave! They were cautious at first, as these guys are prone to biting, but soon realised that he came with no aggressive agenda. He just wanted to say hi and get to know the team:) 🦭

    It is sad, yet perfectly normal, in colonies of tens of thousand pinnipeds to see dead bodies on the beach. Natural causes like predation, starvation and sickness prevent half the Cape fur seal pups to see year one. Older animals are also subject to diseases and injuries. We leave the dead bodies to the seabirds, jackals and hyenas.

    I think it’s a prime example of how Mother Nature continually throws different evolutionary traits out to test what works and what doesn’t in the survival of a species……😮😮😊

  • @genekisayan6564

    @genekisayan6564

    3 ай бұрын

    Mother nature doesn't throw anything at all. The traits appear completely randomly over generations. Under the environment's pressure they are selected and the fittest stays along the way passing down the same mutation to future calfs. Btw it has already happened in the past that a mutation occurred and widely spread across the population, canceling a useful mutation that was allowing those species to survive in it, or at least was usefull in a way but not indispensable. A straight example is our eyes. Lots of mamals used to have more than 4 iris battons (don t remember exactly the scientific term), which would have allowed us to perceive a wider spectrum of the light. But unfortunately we, and other apes, lost it, resulting into narrowing our range of light wave perception😢

  • @moojuice369

    @moojuice369

    @@genekisayan6564 why do traits appear completely random over generations then, isn’t it to pass better traits along to the species for their future survival if that particular trait allows for better survival for the species. I think you took the word “throws” too literally. Apparently having 4 iris battons as you state was not useful enough and so was not retained in our genetic pool. 🙄

    Fellow creations of the one true God who yearns to bring you salvation in these last days, repent and turn from sins and unprofitable things which bring nothing but chains over you, tying you to dark thoughts and desires, being slaves to fears and all things which lead to death and destruction both now and after, but be saved by Christ, who in exchange for salvation, only desires righteousness from us, loving others as yourself, loving him and believing he is God, obeying him and his commands which lead to life, and just as Christ overcame this world and it's sin, you will also through his power, so follow Christ and sin no more, and be saved.

    @@moojuice369 It's too bad, because I'd love to see into different spectrums of light and have even more colors to gawk at. But anyways, traits don't really appear 'completely randomly,' rather certain minute changes that suit the environment more tend to result in improved procreation, as those with the changed traits outcompete their competitors either via food and/or mating. As a result of this specialization, species tend to develop their own niches. Honestly, evolution's incredible, and I just love examining/imagining how things have changed over the millenia. Sadly, none of us live that long, and the best examples we get of "real-time" evolution tends to be in bacteria and viruses. :(

    I know this is old but maybe there is explanation of why some seals have this odd behavior. 1. It's nothing other then just curiosity. 2. The seal had encounter other humans that either were friendly to him or saved their live. 3. Option 2 but with the parent that probably taught its pup to like humans. Good job on not giving them affection otherwise they could up being hurt by someone malicious.

It was attracted to the nets shape (designed to house a seal, it has a similar shape, they do not have great eyesight) and then just followed the people. If you take a look at the beach it's littered in dead pups and adult seals. As sad as it is, this is perfectly normal and one of natures ways of keeping population numbers down.

    @@terryfuldsgaming7995 eh not necessarily. I just watched a video of a baby deer following and crying to hikers for help bc it was starving (the mom had died or likely abandoned him), and there is no way it had been fed by or seen a human before. with wild animals, that will to survival will sometimes override their natural instincts to avoid humans, plus baby animals can often be less cautious and more curious than adults.

    @@High_Tech_Priest They are often considered a nuisance to fishers because they appear to create competition. But it's really man-made problems that create fish shortages, not the seals. Also, there is a seal hunting season in Namibia. Seal harvesting in Namibia targets approx 86,000 seal pups and 8,000 adult bulls per year. Trusting humans and their ships and harbors make them easy targets. Also having full grown seals who are interested in humans can be a nuisance issue and may lead to more people being inclined to interact with them. And you irritate wild animals enough they will eventually start being hostile to some people. They can be extremely territorial, especially when it comes to their babies. It's better to leave all wild animals alone unless you are a rehabilitator or are doing rescue work.
