Without the zoo he’d probably be dead. Most animals in a zoo are either rescued from the wild or born in the zoo. Because they’re born in the zoo the lack the knowledge and skills learned to survive in the wild. Depends on what’s worse. Live a long and safe life or die without living long to begin with.

That's the point, they don't physically harm people, they use intimidation and would rather chase off people until they sense the person is far enough away from his family. Adult gorillas are rather docile, unless you do something stupid that'll trigger them to go self-defensive and protective of their family.

Gorillas are such smart, intelligent, and emotionally aware animals... just a few hundred thousands of years separating them from us in evolution and biology, and significantly less than that is the smidge difference in their thinking capabilities and emotional and social awareness they share with each other just like we do. Brilliant creatures, like looking at a ancient reflection of our ancestors... (it is actually), but its so sad to see how we treat them. Locking them up their whole lives in captivity, and being as aware and understanding as they are, you can only imagine how they feel seeing other animals that look just like them, on the outside of their confines, watching them most of their day, and being free unlike they are.

The last time I went to the zoo (I will never go again), I saw kids throwing rocks at chimpanzees. It was absolutely heartbreaking. There is no security whatsoever even watching over stupid onlookers. The way humanity is with animals is beyond heartbreaking. I can’t even fathom how people kill and eat them. Haven’t eaten any myself in 30 years. It’s just sick!

Gorillas are by far my favorite animal. They are some of the calmest animals in the world and want no trouble at all. Look at the size of the silverback gorilla. He posseses strenght few other animals on the land do, yet he will only ever use it if absolutely necessary.

it's amazing how much the gorillas eyes look like ours usually when people think of the similarity between our to species they think of the hands but look at his eyes

I always feel extra sad for the big silverbacks at the zoo because they are so extremely intelligent and you can just see their boredom, frustration, and pent up aggression. I'm sure the zoo keepers do their best to give them a good life, but it's just not the same as when they are leading a family group in the wild. Such powerful yet sensitive creatures.
