Brain to muscle distance. Nerves carry signals at about 80 meters per sec, which is almost instantaneous in a chipmunk.

I have a little guy that eats peanuts out of my hand, runs away and hides them, and returns for more. Haven't seen him since the end of fall. He must be hibernating!

I've got chipmunks storing their winter food stash under my front porch, and some squirrels too, which I thought was odd because I don't remember ever seeing them anywhere but up North (e.g. Northern Ontario, Canada). My wife said I'm an idiot and that they've always been around here so I asked my neighbour (who is a dead ringer for Homer Simpson in both looks and intelligence) and he said he doesn't remember ever seeing them down here either. Short of looking it up to find out the truth my options are; I can either take her or Homers word for it, I'm going with Homer.

Peanuts (especially salted ones!) are not safe food for chipmunks. Seeds, berries, and fruit are okay.

Because chipmunks don't know any better. (Peanuts would swell up in their little bellies and cause problems.) I've seen greasy fried pork rinds being offered to them by ingrates, and the chipmunks ate those also.
