Cut Bait Tips For Catching Redfish

Ойын-сауық

Want to learn how to catch bull redfish using cut bait? Well, here are some of my best cut bait tips for catching redfish.
First, what is cut bait?
Cut bait is when you cut up dead (or alive) bait in order to soak it on the bottom to attract predator fish.
My top 3 favorite fish for cut bait are (in this order);
1) Mullet
2) Ladyfish
3) Pinfish
Mullet seem to be the easiest to net, they have a great scent in the water (attracts the redfish), and you can cut off big enough pieces that it scares away the dink fish from inhaling your cut bait.
Regarding the size of the cut bait, I like to use large pieces of mullet or even the full mullet head. It's shocking how many bull redfish will suck down a mullet head!
The cons to cut bait?
Well, it can be messy, it certainly attracts sharks and other junk fish (like catfish), and bait stealers certainly will put a dent in your cut bait.
Some of the best places to use cut bait for redfish are:
1) potholes on grass flats
2) the deeper edges around grass flats
3) inlets, rocks, jetties, etc
I also like to use a circle hook as it makes it easier for the redfish to hook itself without having to set the hook.
Do you have any favorite tips on catching redfish using cut bait that I missed?
Let me know in the comments below.

    My local bait shop mostly sells live or dead finger mullet. So I've started using the large ballyhoo they sell and use 3 to 4 inch pieces. Our reds down here can't resist them. 👍

    Thanks bro for the awesome tip on proper size bait set up. I've been using smaller pieces of mullet and catching more catfish and small tugs on my line not sure if it's crabs playing with my line or what. I also appreciate the info on type of hooks to use although not sure how you would set that up. Did u use the hook at the end and a weight 2 ft. before that? Thanks for all you're wisdom and God Bless!

    Great vid and tips....I do have a question on hook location on the cut bait...I noticed you hooked the bait from the meat of the bait through to the outside of the skin of the bait...why would you not hook it from the outside of the skin to the outside of the skin? Trying to figure if there is better time to do one or the other...thanks in advance. Tight Lines!

    Hey salt strong, I have a question. This October, my dad and I are going saltwater fishing on Edisto Island, which has a main southern river we fish in. Would you recommend for Redfish and sea trout (gators) using live, artificial, or a mix. Unfortunately we don't own a trolling motor and we have mostly used live bait, but I have been trying to incorporate lures into my routine. Also, Edisto has virtually no submerged grass and very few flats, so what areas should I look for on Satellite maps?

  • @mahtoosacks

    @mahtoosacks

    Daniel Richard, Ive been lucky using choke points between areas. Look for spots between shallow bait fish grounds and deep water with plenty of cover. That's been my luck, but I'm new to redfishing. Where I am we have a shallow estuary that feeds through a culvert to a deep water ship harbor. Been busting the big ones by the ships.

    If you can get them use whole live mullet, hit Shem Creek, pit street or anywhere else with a Creek walk pier and a grass line, I got about 60 granted they were pinky finger size. Just go down there with a small castnet.

    I have found the more structure you are around and or reefs oyster beds etc go with as much as possible , a bull red is strong and you have to consider anything else that will eat a hunk of bait . I use 80 lb braid and a fluro leader with 5 to 7 ott hooks ,,,,,,,,,,,,, that doesn't mean you have to but I have lost many fish due to the structures and such and its pretty durable and you can get quite a bit of salt water fishing out of it , if your in saltwater you have sharks drums grouper huge jacks and so on that can easily tire lighter line . and I am sure many guys prefer different setups and so on ,,,,,,,,,,, maybe your surroundings will dictate the proper tackle .

And you are right about it not catching the little trash fish but there is a much longer wait If the bulls are not close by. End your how to videos with a demo if possible.

    I caught my first bull of 39 inches which is nice but not even close to huge on a live mullet maybe 6 inches , which I thought was odd especially since everyone that I have talked to in my area says they don't eat mullet very often , I live in ponce inlet FLA with great bull fishing so I wanted to ask ...... the mullet have been running not huge ones , and I love using them for everything , I have caught them occasionally in my throw net between 8 and 20 inches but they are few and far between , is there special spots that the big roe mullet like to hang out ?

    You can start to recognize the difference when a crab grabs your bait. It just seems to get heavier, doesn't seem to swim. Just reel in slowly and have your net ready! Net them when they get next to the boat. I've caught over a dozen like that. Free bait and free dinner! Catching is catching my friend. Tight lines!
