He wanted her to toast everything except the bread? He couldn’t have corrected her as he watched her put his entire sandwich in the toaster? Like you can see what they’re doing. That’s on him you have to specify first.

I think the whole "The customer is always right" mentality has caused too many people to feel entitled like they have a right to be abusive toward customer service staff members. You shouldn't have apologized or offered to make him a new sandwich. You should have told him to get the hell out. He shouldn't have treated her like that. Companies should give their employees the ability to fight back against abusive jerks.

That's not what the customer is always right means. It means you don't insert your opinion on their choices. If they order their steak well done, you give it to them well done, you don't tell them that they should have it medium rare. It doesn't mean anything like what you're implying.

@@Hippogan No, that's what it has always meant. Some random people taking a random guess at its application doesn't mean shit. If you work in a clothes shop and a customer really likes a shirt for themselves which you think looks ugly on them, you don't say shit or tell them they shouldn't buy it because the customer is always right.

I had a similar experience and unironically, on my last day I worked there. I worked at a Ma and Pop Korean Restaurant in a pretty populated area as a cashier, I didn't make the food. All was well until we got a larger than average lunch rush, all orders for takeout, and since I had put in my two weeks, a lot of my coworkers thought I was abandoning them, so they called out sick or called for vacation, whatever. The fun stuff. Anyways, I was working alone. So I get quite a few orders put through and I get to a lady who orders something for take out that can be made in about 2 minutes, but since the cooks do things based off of ticket number and how easy something can be made in the downtime of actually cooking something, she probably wasn't going to get her food prepared for about another 10 minutes and would have to go through me sorting and bagging everything alone while also taking orders. Maybe like a few orders taken later, this lady comes to the cash register, interrupting me from bagging food, complaining that I'm being too slow. I had to ask her what her order number was because I had maybe done another 6 or 7 orders after her. She told me her order number, which she was nowhere near me being able to bag if I even had the food ready. So I told her, "Yeah, uh just give me a bit and I'll get to you. I'm kinda alone as you can see." she scoffs and goes back to where she was sitting. I take out my next few orders I bag up because we don't just call their order number, we gotta go walk to them. At this point, it's all just getting annoying, being alone with nobody to help out. The cooks asked if I'm good and I tell them "Yeah, I'll manage." I didn't. This lady, god bless her soul, knocks on the counter and asks for a refund. I say "You're being a bit unreasonable. There are people that were in front of you in the line and you don't see them getting up and stopping me from doing my job." To make this shorter, I'll just say that she wasn't happy and continued to pester me while I was bagging up food. Just as I was about to take out the food I had bagged up to maybe the 2nd person before her, I hear my cooks say the order number for hers. All I could let out was a "Thank God" because I have been basically ignoring the chittering rat behind me. She heard that and started to get even more upset, normal "Manager" line and all that but I didn't care. I wanted her out. Bag up the food as fast as possible, basically throw it at her and tell her to GTFO, pointing at the door leading back to whence she came. She grumbled and walked out. I got to finish some bagging and taking food out before some other people walked in to order. As I'm in the middle of taking the family's order, this woman once again walks in and just about yells that I stole her card that she used to pay. This is where I will reveal, that during the payment process, Cashiers do not touch any cards. We face the card reader to them and they do everything. When I stated this to her, she still insisted that I had her card and that she would call the cops. If only I could show everyone's face in that dining area. Because it was hilarious. I tell her to call the cops and stay in the building then, but no, she knew she was caught in the lie and waddled back out. Thankfully the rest of my solo double shift wasn't so stressful and eventful, I was able to do my job without problems arising. If anyone wants to know my two cents in why servers and cashiers don't want to work for restaurants or just in general the food industry, Covid has made a lot of these customers who stayed inside for months a lot more dreadful to deal with. I can only hope that if I pick up another food industry job that it isn't as bad as it was where I previously worked.

You get so empathic for these workers that you have to investigate and when you check the audio on the cameras you find out that every word they said was a lie.

I work at Sonic and if you are unaware it is a drive in where the customer will pull up to a stall and press a button to order. Inside we also have screen to add what they want to the order and it shows the customer what we've added (Pretty much the same as any drive through at a fast food). Anyway we always read what is on the screen to double check if everything is correct. We then place the order and we receive a receipt that has exactly whatever was on the screen. The number of times customers have told me what's on the receipt is wrong is unbelievably infuriating. If the receipt is wrong it's because you told us that it was correct!

The customer is wrong 97% of the time when they get mad about something. They don't read a label or they think an ad is for the wrong week - there's exceptions to the rule, but when they get upset about something, it's usually just them being an a-hole. I used to work at a grocery store and it was a super slow night. There were about 3 customers in the store, so I sent the remaining employees out with the manager to help work on stocking shelves and whatnot, and held down the front by myself. It's a small enough store that if things get busy and I need to page someone up, they'll be at the front within 30 seconds tops. So this guy comes up and he's got maybe 8 or 9 things. Pretty simple order and there's no one else around. He looks around in this exaggeratedly confused manner and I tell him "I can help you up front." He says something like "No one's working here?" I tell him I'm the only one up front at the moment, and he starts getting irritable. He makes some smart comment and I just stand at my register waiting, deciding not to engage any further as this guy's clearly looking to start something. Long story short, during the transaction, he makes it apparent that he wanted to go to a different lane, and that I should have had that open for him. I tell him it's not busy enough, and there's a lot of work in the rest of the store that needs doing. He starts throwing a fit, telling me how I'm not doing my job right, and how this isn't how a store is supposed to be run. Another customer comes up behind him ready to check out, but I've finished scanning his stuff, so I don't need to call up anyone else. He starts complaining more, making more elaborate gestures and the poor woman just looks away, clearly embarrassed to be in the same building as this guy. One of his items is a 5 gallon jug of water - the kind they use for water coolers, and so he wants drive-up. He didn't even have to lift that during the transaction because I have a code I punched in - so no, he wasn't mad about that. I page the drive up kid up front, but the night manager comes up to do it instead, explaining she has him doing something she has him doing something that she doesn't want to take him away from. The night manager is a young girl in her early 20s and about a foot shorter than me, and the guy starts going at it again, complaining that "she wouldn't have had to come up and do that if I'd had the cashier in his lane." I'm sure from his perspective, it looked like the big man was making this girl do all the heavy lifting because I wasn't doing my job right, or that I should be doing the heavy lifting, and he was "standing up for her" or something like that. I just shrug and say "She would have had to come up either way." and get started on the next customer's order. Both she and the night manager are avoiding looking at him. Then he asks "Where's the manager?" Behind him, I can see her face tense up and immediately I just tell him "That's me." Technically, I'm the supervisor, so I'm a little below manager, but I'm just done with this guy and I'm not going to make her listen to him ranting like a lunatic about me. He walks out and before the automatic doors close, comes back in and goes "What's your name?" I look him in the eye, point to my nametag and tell him. He grumbles more of the same complaints before leaving again. Once more, about 5 seconds later, comes back in and as soon as he says his first word, I just say "Get out. Just get out. Get out. Just go." talking over him and pointing at the door behind him until he leaves. As soon as she's sure he's out of earshot, the customer I'm helping says "Don't worry about it. His wife is probably cheating on him." Me, her, and the night manager all share a good laugh. When the night manager comes back from drive up, she just says "He does not like you" and I laughed. She thanked me for saying I was the manager, saying she didn't know what she would have done if she'd had to deal with him. The next day, as you might imagine, he made a special trip back to the store and complained to the head manager about me. Unsurprisingly, this guy was well-known for being a total prick, so while they heard him out, I didn't face any kind of discipline. The head manager just said he could tell he was being an a-hole from the way he was waving his arms around (since our cameras don't pick up audio). I saw the guy a few times after that and he didn't really say much. The messed up thing is how customers are allowed to act like a-holes and have to go way past too far before anything is done (such as banning them), while customer complaints often hurt employees, even when the employee was completely in the right. I didn't really care about that job, and that definitely made it easy to stand my ground and not take this guy's sh*t. I'd like to say I'd behave the same way at my current job - one I actually do care a bit about - but I can't say for certain. I'm saying it's disgusting that people in the service industry are expected to accept that people are going to be a-holes to them sometimes. Don't get me wrong, 99% of people are just fine. But when even 1% of people are Karens, and you deal with hundreds of people in a day, you're going to have a few bad experiences every day that make you lose faith in humanity, even if most of it is good people.

Man thank god I dont see this much where I work.. the closest thing to a customer getting hella mad actually happened last week. This one customer just came in, we just got done with a pretty big rush so everyone was working on restocking, this dude who was at the counter for 30 seconds top got hella mad where he yelled: “ARE YOU GUYS GOING TO HELP US OR JUST STAND AROUND!” We didnt even know how to respond so we just put a hold on whatever we were doing and made his shit, so he can just get the hell outta there.

I had this happen with mustard lol the guy comes in asks for mustard on his sub then i ask if that’s everything, he said he doesn’t care because he won’t eat it anyway since it had mustard on it…. I remade it for him thinking holy crap I can’t believe I thought he said mustard when he claimed he wanted mayo but two ladies standing behind him in line told me he did actually say mustard and i was like thank you!! I could have sworn I heard him say mustard lol like people really need to pay attention to what their ordering 🤦🏻‍♀️

my family runs two stores, and we had whats probably the rudest customer we had in a long time. it was very busy and my mom and i were the only one in the store helping like 12 people. this one women came in, 4 minutes later walked out and said "if you cant handle this many people, why dont you just close!" and she left the door open while it clearly asks to close it. i heard her insult us and our store outside, so i walked out and told her to come and help us. i'd even pay her for it. yeah... she did not like that
