Customer Threatened to Call the Health Department on Me....

#berespectful #karma #frustration
Sometimes I wonder if someone is just having a bad day, just I try my best not to feed into it & end a conversation with a peaceful resolution.
Other times the level of disrespect is just way over my head.
Once it gets to that point, I simply just feel sorry for that person who has to act that way.
Life is too short, be a human, be nice, it's just that simple.
Karma always makes its way back around.

Long ago I started my own heating business cleaning furnaces and boilers. One day a competitor called and said that Mr. H’s fuel oil burning boiler that I had serviced had done a lot of damage to the house and I better come over quick. As I walk to the door I see black sooty footsteps on the walkway. When I walk in everything in the house is black with soot. I go to the boiler and the service guy smugly explains I must have misaligned the burner electrodes or something. So I inspect the burner and everything looks perfect. The service guy then takes me outside to show me a vent pipe with a huge half cooked raccoon stuck in it. I pulled the service receipt and went to see the homeowner. Mr H was insisting that I was responsible, regardless of the raccoon. I showed him the service ticket that listed his signed refusal to have a vent cap installed, sorry you didn’t have it taken care of, and left.

When I was young, I was a framer working for a contractor. We built an addition on a mans home. My boss and he went to the same church. The contractor took the deposit and went on a gambling spree in Vegas. He did not pay us for a month. The home owner filed a law suit and asked me to testify on his behalf and he would pay my lost wages. He told me do not worry I am a good Christian and would never stiff you! I testified and he won the case. On the day, that he brought my check for wages, it was one quarter of what it should have been. He ran to his car and locked the doors. I did however cave in his drivers door!

We replaced an engine OVER a year ago for a customer, the engine took many, many months to arrive, it was a Chrysler, and just not available. It took about a year (yes a year) to get the Reman Engine. The customer decided THEY wanted the transmission fluid changed, so we did. NOT normally changed, but we also had to swap a fuel feed line, and an emission hose. The total bill increased by $400.00. She called the Attorney Generals office, contacted her lawyer and generally made a PITA of herself. Has left the Truck here for a YEAR! She is STILL disputing the bill. We finally told her to come get it, bring the money owed, or we will file a mechanics lien for two years of storage @ $35.00 a day. If we do that they were told we will settle this year for $24,000 PLUS the balance on her bill for the engine.

Man I've been self employed since I was 17. People are stupid. Most are great. Two things really torqued me. If they presented themselves as reverend..... or if they ever described theirs as a " fine Christian family " always put ants on me. Literally would start putting zeros on the estimate. Found that if I was outrageously high on my price they wouldn't use me and wouldn't refer me to their like minded friends.

Funny how they always forget the part about "the Lord helps those that help themselves".

I own my own machine shop and specialize in repairing industrial pumps. Big ones. One of the best customers I have today is a company that thought I had screwed up a repair. I rebuilt the same pump two more times under warranty before we figured out it was their mechanic that had replaced the electric motor for one using the wrong shaft size. I was the one that figured it out. I never saw that guy on the job site again and 15 years later when their pumps wear out I am the one rebuilding them. Also because of my modifications to the pumps they went from a one year service life to 3 or 4 year service life. Like your videos. Shake the mans hand and do him a good job.

From the "Smarter not Harder" advice files: 1. Get your files onto a closed computer system for crying out loud! That poor secretary (girlfriend / wife / mother / Aunt, or whoever she is lol) shouldn't have to go through years of boxes to try and find one lonesome work order. A work order that you didn't have. You're too young to be telling people that you have to go through a paper trail to locate a job order! LOL 2. I only watched a bit of the video so far and I'm already talking to you on your video, telling you that you shouldn't be doing anything until the guy can provide you the proper customer information so that you can actually confirm he was a customer and that the job he's talking about was indeed performed by you. 3. Never make a video while driving! 4. OMG! You're going to do a job for someone who demonstrated dishonesty and low morals!? That really calls into question your ability to make good judgment decisions. No one could agree that this was a good decision! Oy vey! And so you know, I took the time out to write this information for you because I do think you're a good guy, but in this case, you needed someone to put a hand on your shoulder and say whoa, slow down, think it through, don't make decisions when you're upset or angry. And do you really want to make a 2-hour drive, one-way, to God knows where, to be alone with a guy who has demonstrated questionable behavior? And even if you bring a partner with you, it still doesn't prevent an altercation from occurring that I'm sure you don't need to be bothered with or involved with. After all, it's not about you, it's about your company and people who depend on your company remaining viable and in business and not delayed or derailed because you made a bad decision to go visit this guy.

I was a service electrician for over a decade and did everything from residential outlets to giant industrial ink jet printers that did 100s of thousands of sheets a minute. I could relate a dozen stories like this. In the end I generally carried out one of two actions. One, I would simply refuse to service them if they were not a prior customer or were not in good standing. (IE: slow or no pay. PITA customer that made the previous job much harder than needed ot tried to add in extra work for no cost.) The second was to do an extremely detailed proposal spelling out exactly what we were doing and not doing as well as warnings of issues that the customer was advised of and chose not to address. I then would add 50% up charge to the proposal and require a deposit of 50%. Get it signed as well as confirmation via Email. This assured we were covered for any issues sure to crop up. Bad or troublesome customers ALWAYS COST YOU AND SHOULD PAY MORE!

Wow, that's one heck of an assumption there. She gave you no clue as to how old the pump is. First step in troubleshooting such a problem should be to determine if the pump is actually drawing too much current. It could be as simple as a defective breaker tripping below its nominal threshold. That does happen. First rule of service work is (should be) to investigate the simplest possible causes first. Sorry, but your score on this one is a fail.

If you do give this man and his mother the complete package you mentioned, service call, new well liner, maybe even a new house filter system, you need to add at least an extra15 to 20% on the bill for his attitude. Then if you wish you can give that extra amount to your local church charity or something. Personally I wouldn't take on that job myself, unless you were starving, maybe not even then. You are a very good man, and there is no sense in tempting fate. Keep your chin up, and continue working at your best, just like always. Wow. If he truly is a pastor what a horrible testimony. Tough when people come at you like that and in the end you've done nothing wrong. I know it's hard don't let it bother you too much. You know your personal character and the work and service you provide and I think at this point so do all your subscribers and people that know you.

You sir have the patience of Job. I will disagree with you though, do not give credence to a business relationship that starts with threats. You said it yourself, there is MORE than enough work to keep you and your workforce busy without setting up you and your crew for this nightmare. There is nowhere good that this will go and you'll end up as a scapegoat for every adverse event in this persons life. I hope that you got through this easily and quickly. Love your videos keep 'em coming brother.

What a strange situation. You are a good man to keep your cool with people like that. One possibility that comes to mind is that his elderly mother was confused and riled up about her water and gave him bad information. If there was some dementia at play, who knows how things can get mixed up, her well her friends well, she just can't keep it straight. He caught the riled up bug from her and got all indignant and went on the warpath so to speak. I love the Lord too and find it strange and somewhat offensive when religious folks play the "Jesus card" to try to take a superior position and manipulate people. Of course the other possibility is that he was trying to threaten and manipulate you into doing the work for free. Overall, If I may suggest that it would be better to avoid doing business with that guy.
