A man tries to find a song.
CUSTOMER SERVICE is used with permission from Alex Medina. Learn more at fila20.com.
Charles is on a mission: he heard a "wonderful song" on his flight the previous day, and he wants to find out what it is. Unable to figure out the title and artist of the track, he's now on the phone with the airline's customer services as he flips through records at a local shop.
But dealing with the endless round of holds, waits and transfers on the phone proves frustrating, putting Charles through a uniquely modern hell just to simply find the one song that brought him joy during a rough time in his life. His temper gets the best of him, but in picking up the pieces afterwards, he gets a rare moment of grace.
Director Alex Medina, along with co-writer Juan Pablo Daranas Molina, has fashioned a comic short that, like many great comedy shorts, is an expanded scene taken to hilariously logical extremes.
What makes this short work is its total relatability, and its portrayal of the absolute absurdity of modern life. Very few people can't relate to the frustrations of dealing with customer service that seems designed to thwart and even enrage consumers, instead of making them feel listened and heard.
But while the film's situation is absurd, it's still grounded in very relatable and understandable human emotions, functioning as a witty, revealing study of anger and aggression.
The lead performance by Jordan Rennick is both underplayed and outrageous, but there's emotional truth in his portrayal on how we take the anger and helplessness we feel in one situation and turn it against someone in another entirely different but adjacent situation.
But by the film's end, Charles has a moment of self-realization and vulnerability, realizing his own part in escalating a situation. The simple, quiet way he takes accountability -- and the kindness he shows himself and others -- complete his arc in an emotionally satisfying way that feels well-earned and organic in a way that's sometimes rare in comedy shorts.
In this way, CUSTOMER SERVICE is a wry, knowing object lesson in just how crazy modern life has become, and how we navigate tricky situations through acceptance, honesty and humor.

Not to pass blame but I think a lot of them learned it from disputes between parents/siblings and mirrored at school so they were taught it was normal behavior to just be assertive. If anything I'm too timid but I do try and understand other peoples perspectives as well. And more often than not I end up learning stuff myself through their social behavior. Not just about them or me but from other peoples reactions too. Unless they're just being downright toxic, in which case I speak up about it if I witness it happening to someone.

That's wasting your time and the companies. And most anywhere you go, the music is a radio station or some sort of autoplay. And holding up two records in a store that likely has 100s of albums and expecting her to know them? What? Humming the song and expecting her to know it? Seriously? She was clearly disinterested in helping...but at the same time his requests were also completely ridiculous.

What I saw in this short is a man going through a rough patch in his life. (He is in the midst of divorce, his daughter hates him), he is at the end of his rope and the only thing is left for him is a song that provided him a safe zone, comfort of some sort. That gave him a bit of sanity. He wants to find that song at whatever cost. In his search, he isn’t in control of his emotions, expecting help unconditionally, he wants attention to his cause while other people that he needs their empathy aren’t in tune with his inner turbulence till the woman on the phone come through with the help he needed despite his way of treating her…. We all have the experience of the sort in our life and so we naturally get in tangled with our inner feelings that we lose sight of all else

I watched this short film a few months ago. Saw in the comments what the song was. Listened to it and liked it. Sorta forgot about it until today; I wanted to hear it again but forgot the name. So, I searched for this short film to search for the comment for that song. Very fitting lol.

All the comments scolding the guy as rude and deserving of his divorce and his child hating him and what not have probably never had a bad day. He was hardly out of line with the first customer service person who was rather patronizing. Same with the store owner. Sure, he lost it with the supervisor and got what he deserved or generously more with him!

Why didn’t he ask the flight attendant for the name of the song before he got off the plane? We’ve all been there - trying to trace the name of a piece of music we heard once and loved - but if you want people’s help it doesn’t pay to be rude and obnoxious. My fave part was where the supervisor told this prat where to get off!
