Very well said. I must admit that I have a simple policy of telling a customer how much and roughly how long it may take so they understand from the offset. I also reiterate that if minimum wage is almost £12 then in order to receive that I need to be charging a minimum 3 times £36/hour plus then need to make a profit and cover other expenses. You need to now earn a minimum 4 times national wage to cover costs (taxes, expenses, etc). £80 seems reasonable as prices are usually around £30/£40 per side of house.

Always state your price and what you are doing in either a text message or email. Ask them once they have agreed to what is in those messages you will be able to give them a start date. Thats your contract right there and thats how the law will see it.

He should have said to the customer that if he will pay for his marketing, van, equipment, insurance and take a risk of employing him and then he could decide how much he should make

I agreed a price, on a gardening job, to this day I never got my £800, I am no push over, My advice is to go down the legal rout, if you have an official quote, and they have accepted it, you have legal right to payment, the last thing a customer wants is a ccj, unfortunately you will get a rare breed, who just does not care
