Custom USB to SATA power cable to power SSD drive

Ғылым және технология

Showing you how to create a custom SATA power cable by using USB connector from motherboard.
USB connector has 5V power which is enough to power SSD drive.
However there is no cable that I know (premade) that plugs into 9-pin USB header to SATA power connector. So I had to make this cable myself and test it.
If you don't have existing USB cable or SATA power cable, please consider using my link below to purchase from Amazon:

yes there is no cable exactly like this, we have to make our own custom usb to power sata cable.

  • 2 жыл бұрын

For me, it was a PicoPSU powered PC because there you have a 2ft cable with Molex, SATA and Floppy that I don‘t like to have just for a SSD.

Thanks man, I have a bit of a horde of old components, wires, and general tech, so I'm constantly trying to find ways to upcycle and create new life for my stuff. Also, cracked me tf up when you were explaining the +/- wires on the USB and just went "ehhhhI don't know what's going on" 😂

That motherboard usb plug has 2 ports available, it would have been better to join both ports 5v lines together to provide 1amp to the ssd drive instead of 0.5amp from only one port. The reason being that most ssd drives use over 0.5amp when writing data which exceeds the max current from only one usb port. This could result in the drive not getting enough current during large writes and corrupting data on the drive.

@Matthue Gera Don't need to, the SSD drive works fine with 0.5amp

@@DIYGEEKTEXAS still I wouldn‘t risk it unless there only is something stored that isn‘t important. At least if I know the port only can provide 2.5W. Most ports can provide 1A however, in this case the wire gauge seems to be low enough to be able to handle 1A. Both ports are connected in parallel so if the cable itself can handle the current, it‘s not a problem. The pins on the 9p header probably are normal 2.54mm ones meaning they can at least handle 2A.

Very interesting. I'm looking for something like that, but i need to power 3 SSD drives. You think that 1USB connector will be enought?

I have powered 2 ssd drives successfully. Not sure about 3. Pls let me know if you try it. Thanks

You could try checking continuity from USB+ to the 5V rail of the board. If it‘s a dead short, it shouldn‘t be a problem (2.54mm connectors itself are able to handle 2A at least). However the wire gauge on the 9p to USB-A adapter thing must be low enough to be able to handle the current.

what is a mobile adapter? does your mobile adapter have 9-pin usb header female plug? if it does not, then it probably will not work.

@@rajvanshraisharma2705 ok I see what you are saying, sure it would, as long as you separate and use just the 5v (+) and (-) cables and match it up with the SATA plug.

For 12V use the YELLOW cable (yellow usually indicates 12V DC power in computers)
