Custom Laser Sign | Lisa Simpson | Thunder Laser Nova 35/100w
I wanted to see how fast I could make a sign. Prior to the laser I was using a scroll saw and a sign like this wouldn't have been possible and definitely not at this speed!
What do you think?

Just an idea on the painting process. I find both yellow and red cover much better with a white base coat first. I also always make it a habit to actually base all of the project in white anyways to act as a bit of a sealer. MDF is a very porous material and absorbs much of the product before coloring it. Your project looks great, however next time you paint on MDF give the white base coat a try. If you don't like it there's nothing lost. You will also see your paint colors are much more vibrant too. Anyways, GREAT Video and nice project

I've actually painted a lot of MDF with other projects with the scroll saw. The sides are typically what I have issues with and use primer filler for that BUT the sides were covered on this piece other than the outline so no primer. Less paint waste. :)
its always a good idea to do a small test cut on new materials. often times it can save time and material. great job!

I did actually. I did something in between the test cuts which resulted in this error.
I find that if you mirror the bottom layer in lightburn, you can engrave your logo at the same time your cutting everything out. Saves a little bit of time.

Great coverage on MDF with that paint/primer! What brand did you use?

Your work is awesome.Next time You could add more depth to the sign by adding more layers for the cap and eyeglasses.that will made the sign 3D instead of flat.

i do that with other signs, you can see on my IG! this one is a 2D cartoon so i kept her flat! :) next time i would like to add different things like maybe acrylic for glasses etc.

I have the exact Thunder 35/100w laser like you have and just start using it about 2 weeks ago. Are all the pieces from MDF cut? Also, the MDF that you use is so good that it looks so smooth when you paint on it. Where did you buy your MDF from? Also, what is the setting that you use to cut the MDF?

I just bought my first lasercutter, a 50 watt. The chiller is 7 days away. Have you owned other machines? I was curious, wondering if you worry about getting a long life from the tube. I obviously can't cut that thick of mdf, just trying to figure out where to try to keep my power levels max output. Oh, and the Lisa? Really cool!
@AleeshaDIY

I don't worry too much, many people get quite a long time out of their tubes! This is my first laser! :) @@HockeyPop29
what air assist do you have cause that power laser should have cut through that quite easy. Also its wise to cut a small square first to dial in your cut power and speed.also where some parts cut through and others dont can sometimes be down to the quality of the wood(mainly plywood) and down to the levelness of your bed. gonna follow you though as i like supporting small creators.

it cut just fine once my laser settings were at the correct power. I had them changed from a prior project and didn't change it back for this by accident. But yes I have cut a test piece on every material so far as you mentioned.
Great job! Where can I buy one?

Are there issues with using copy right images???

Yes there are, you can't use images that are copyright / trademarked. Best to stay away from them not not worth the fine. You can also contact the companies direct to double check.

I could but it actually is quite nice looking on the wall at this size, plus for hardware, it won't go right through!

@@AleeshaDIY Then use smaller screws/hardware. Ive done lots of similar stuff as this on my Thunder Laser and 3 axis CNC and used 1/4" MDF as well, but ended up using 1/8" MDF to add more layers and paint colors without making it super thick and heavy.

@@AleeshaDIY Well, When you grow up and learn and get more experience, maybe you will see what i mean.
Simpsons are the best
You should be aware that you cannot sell items which violate the copyright of others. Disney owns the copyright to The Simpsons, and that includes images of Lisa Simpson. A woman selling items based on the copyrighted works of a country music singer was recently fined $500,000 for doing so, even though the total gross revenue of her Etsy store was less than $15,000. That said, you did a nice job of making a custom sign from Lisa's image.

For every mm thickness of would you use 10 watts of power, 3mm =30 watts, 4mm 40 watts etc. If you cut to fast with your speed it'll not cut through so you'll need to have a play at lowering your speed. I have a 60 watt laser and cut a lot of 3mm either wood or acrylic I use a spped of 12 and give a little more power of 35 watts.

Rip to the front of that vehicle. Open garage with a draft out straight to the vehicle. Overspray is bad.

Could you get that machine to cut a semi-shallow well into the back board the same shape as lisa so she just slots in all snug? Would ensure lisa is in position every time you make one and you wouldn't risk messing up the back board paint job with glue cause you could just glue inside of the well. Would love to play with one of these machines.
