Custom Guitar Amplifiers: Demo and Walkthrough

Музыка

Ok, I might've gone overboard... but who cares?! This was such a fun little side project for me, really brought me back to my childhood messing around with circuit boards and building stuff from scratch. Here's a walkthrough of the amps I made, and of course, how they sound!

Hey Tom, if you can’t have a real full stack tube amp, you might be interested in something like a BlackWidow MGP-1A, it’s a tube preamp with real tubes, full analog path that can model hundreds of amps, it’s a 2U Rack (so it would fit well your wall here). I heard the Power amp section will come later, but you can still use any of the tube power amp such Marshall 50:50 or such. And/or then you could simply use a loadbox like UA Ox Box and go straight in Cubase and use an IR Cab. By doing so, you would have real tube preamp and amp, real analog effect (obviously) and you would have a system that can run quietly. (I’m building a system like that for myself, I have no personal gain from my recommandations here, I’m just mention them because they’re great products and some such the BlackWidow are not well known, but they’re absolutely fantastic… My 2¢

You can use a transformer. they are sold as "Re-amp". they transform the impedance and voltage levels.

Axe-FX doesn't have all the crazy custom mods. Also, I have yet to find a modeler that accurately reproduces the behavior of gear when it's pushed beyond normal levels. Analaog gear starts te behave in a very weird way when you push it to the max and beyond. I have real amps, distortion pedals, some cool preamps etc. as well as an Axe-FX III. I enjoy using both, but when it comes to destructive sound design and getting into a more chaotic territory, analog gear still wins every time for me. Besides that, I find it easier and more exciting to work with analog gear. I do love the sound quality of the Axe-FX III, though. It does a lot of stuff really well and it's only getting better.

This is such a cool project. Actually really love how these modules sound, especially with the various quirks you’ve worked into them. The only thing I’d wonder is if you could really call these amps? They seem more like rack effects, especially if they’d ideally be running into a Marshall or Fender to begin with. Whatever they are, this whole project definitely makes me want to look into homemade pedals as a project!
