CUSTOM DIY Backyard Kayak Stand! AKA...we didn't fully plan it out ahead of time.
Ойын-сауық
We built a cheap and simple wooden kayak stand for our two 10 foot kayaks. We have been storing them in our basement since we bought them this summer. Carrying them up the stairs got old real quick. So we built this. We painted it blue for since we are in the BBN. That's Big Blue Nation for you non Kentucky fans/residents. Enjoy the video!

It looks good. I wouldn’t have thought of blue, but I really like it!

It really did turn out good. We both love how the color turned out!
Thanks for sharing your build. Definitely what I was looking for!
I love how easy this build looked. I made a similar video around the same time actually. But after watching this I feel like I way over engineered my stand lol. And I didn’t even paint it. But I like how you put that together, I’ll probably put that into consideration next time.
Looks great. I must say the BBN will be proud that you thought of them. I know I am. Go Big Blue!

@@johnramey6884 Thank you! 😃
I love this, thank you!! I'm going to modify it for our use, adding some wheels so we can move them around inside the garage since we're quickly becoming an area with a lot of thefts if anything is left outside. I'm not very capable with a saw, so I'll probably make the brace only and get store bought wall mounts.

Great! That sounds awesome. I would recommend supports for the arms. We added them a month or so after we built it. It was a complete oversight, but other than that it is still doing great.
Nice color and fine carpentry!

Thank you!
This is about what I was looking for wanted to see someone else experience, the other common build I see a lot of out there is completely overkill with 4 2x6 on each arm, you could hang a metal kanoe from those this looks about right for a few kyacks.

We love ours. I will say that we added braces for the arms for added strength.
Very good

Thank you!
Thanks for sharing the build idea. However, I noticed a little engineering flaw in the design: the whole weight of each kayak is basically resting on the two screws fixating each horizontal arm to the vertical back post. This is a lot of lever force on those screws. I think you should add a 45 degrees reinforcement piece under each arm. No matter what you do, gravity will always win. If you have a chance, I would also give a little backward angle to the arms, something like 5 or 10 degrees. In the eventuality that the arms or the back posts would bow forward a little bit, that margin would allow the arm to still, at least, remain horizontal-ich and keep your kayaks from sliding forward off the rack.

Great catch! You’re right, gravity always wins! We actually went back added the 45 degree brackets a couple of months after we put the video out!
It looks good ... but those horizontal supports are going to eventually sag and get out of level with one another ... then your kayaks will warp.

You are definitely correct. We completely forgot to add support. We have now and it is still holding up great.
what length screws are you using to attach the 4x4s?

Sorry for taking so long. We used 8” which was probably a little overkill.
