I've never seen custodes even played before, but I want to believe in a faction focused on buffing characters since you can probably fill most of a list with characters if the army is as elite as I think it is.

me who wanted to get into 40k with the custodes being my first army: Oh no Anyways (wil still get the new combat patrol due to the rule of cool)

The custodes are still a cool army to start with and fun to play, the negativity if you call it that is that we feel it could have been better in terms of internal balance and fun play styles that are strong enough to play with. Bring am elite low model count faction they are a good place to start, and if you find a gold spray paint if can be quick to paint too lol... Some of the models from what was forgeworld are expensive, but there are other options like 3d printing and buying from China 🙈

So which one is the good one? Cause they all look bad to me.

the 'good' one is the Shield Host imho but I know a few like the Custodes / Sisters mixed one ...

The problem ain't that it is weaker or that FF is gone (it is a toxic mechanic, been saying it since a while, was a stupid crutch), it is that the codex does not really do anything transformative. Playing the faction isn't different from the one note thing it has been this whole edition. And that is a serious problem. Running a few rhinos, a sister or two, and being able to hop back into a land raider isn't going to make me want to play another ten tournaments with the faction. Because honestly, not like it got better in February in this regard. The faction's power level changed, its one-note nature did not. So regardless of strength, I am taking a break from the army at least until I don't see myself making misplays round 3 for an RTT because I just want the match to be over already. Had that just a week before the first releases, ordered a new project since. Btw. my money is on Talons being the good one out of the current options. Shield Host going second is oof. And you -want to- go second in this game a lot already, so not wanting to kinda isn't good.

Yer I didn't talk about it but you hit the nail on the head, the internal balance isn't there in the codex. There should be various ways to play them and bring different models to life, why haven't the bikers got a detachment. I also agree fight first is horrible, especially as another melee faction against them, along with -1 to hit, it was horroble!

Imo, the index shield host rule, post January 2024 balance dataslate, should have become a second army wide rule for Custodes, excluding Sisters of Silence, and also giving devastating wound protections to all mortal wound FNP abilities game-wide.

I agree! I just think the codex was written a long time ago pre dev wound improvement in the dataslate. Guess we have to wait for a future slate 🤦

Considering how strong (dare I say overly strong) Custodes were previously I think this is less a nerf and more a rebalance. However, I do think they have messed up somewhere and made some mistakes. The next dataslate update will fix Ad Mech and Necrons, and I'm betting the one after will be the Custodes fix.

I think you are right, although I don't think the rebalanced was s on purpose. I think they just have different people or teams and one group know how to write good codices and the other doesn't!

@SimplyWarhammer I fully agree on that. I don't think they keep the same team between codexes half the time. Realistically, it should be the same team writing all of them for a given edition.

I remember how for the whole of 8th l was told that the next FAQ would fix GK. And then it was next FAQ...and next after that. In 9th it took GW 3 years to noticed that abhore the witch allows armies to double dip on VP .

Yes, according to ex-GW staff on The Painting Phase it takes around 19 weeks for materials to be printed in China and arrive back in the UK, before being distributed for sale. So every codex will be written at least 5 months before release.

Honestly when me and my friends play I’m going to only use 9th edition rules for this shit

I think it's written by the same people that made death guard index so it's bland and weak... just speculation mind but it's certainly not written by whomever did Orks and Aeldari index !

Dark angels book is still worse. The company of heroes "ravenwing" detatchment is just okay but not good and inner circle with thier 28% win rate means dark angels might literally be worse than even the new custodes and admech.

Yeah the only chapter that actually uses it’s special detachment well is blood angels sons of russ and both the dark angels detachments are a joke and there basically just being carried hard by being codex +

"its our turn to hold the big stick" is Blizzards balance philosophy and look how that works for them. Hopefully they stabilize out at a 48-51% winrate but I somehow doubt it.

There's a lot of rage about custards so far, they are still playable but all the meta chasers will abandon them asap

Only one is good? Yeah... I think 2 or 3 of the detachments are fine though, not even good. I think there is plenty of stuff to cook with in this book, but it is just a different army now.

The sisters only and character focused detachments are rubbish. The shield host and mix ones are reasonable but you are right things are different now, we need time to adjust and find what works again with whatever points are released
