Cus d'Amato and Mike Tyson - Triumph of character (documentary)

A tribute to great trainer, manager, but above all a far greater person - to Cus d'Amato and to his greatest student Mike Tyson. Special thanks to Steve Lott, the greatest defender of Mike Tyson and Camille Ewald, a great woman

At the end of the day, the footage speaks for itself. 100 years from now, people are going to look back and say that Iron Mike Tyson was the greatest fighter of all time. Even though his peak was very short, that moment in time between 85'-88' showed the closest to perfection a boxer ever got to be in the ring.Thank you Cus.

When Cus said "Mike gave me the reason to stay alive, it's because of him I'm still alive". Those are some very powerful words coming from a person you love and respect. When he said that in front of Mike it gave him the type of energy and happiness that is very rare to most people. This man loved Mike because everything that he did for him he didn't have to. Now I see why Mike In His prime fought the way he did. It wasn't skill, it wasn't speed or power. It was for the love of Cus. To make him proud of him. Rest in Peace Cus!

Bro that be my main argument or point when i speak of Tyson, Tyson fought for Cus and trusted and was willing to die if cus told him he has to die in this fight, mike whole goal was to please Cus but Cus always let him know everything can always be done better which made mike want to please him more and more, getting your dad approval means so much to a kid, think about barry Sanders father who told him as a kid the greatest rbs ever was jim Brown walter Payton so since a kid barry played for his dad approval and during barry HOF ENSHRINEMENT barry father introduced him as the 3rd greatest rb of all time so imagine how he felt, a man instilling confidence in a boy is the difference between good and great imo and also this is why i say Tyson is the greatest warrior with cus by his side training his mind body and soul

Mike did"nt "Just become a champ from the love and respect from Cus" but it was a part of it because tyson DID have speed and power and on his way up to the top certain opponents were genuinely shaken by Mike"s punches with one admitting shocked to the Media that "I"ve never been hit SO hard in my whole life" because nobody lives or should try to live their life for somebody else, you live your life for YOU. Cus was a wisee and goodhearted man who loved Mike and saw the potential and talent in him so he took it upon himsself to complete one last good selfless act of kindness in his old life, and that was to use the last of his energy to do just that and Mike gave him the motivve to hang on for just that much longer because he was getting old,and certainly became older than I"ll ever be or even want to be.And as for the term "Rest in peace" it never made any sense to me;I don"t believe that because exactly what IS it that rests? Your consciousness continues in a different kind of existence and the stuff of your body goes back to the Earth we "Borrowed" it from, something that continues through your whole life with portions of your image constantly crumbling and falling away and is replenished at the same time;so the body you had fex ten years ago is quite literally DEAD and completely replaced with new cells and there is in fact not one single Atom left of those you had back then.Did you ever think of that? I"m 50+ so I"ve gone through a handfull of them already

Great words, Leena. I would add I think Mike never did face his demons in the ring. That’s why each time he faced true adversity in the ring, he failed. He collapsed, ran, didn’t face his demons. I believe he has now though. He seems so much at peace today, spiritually balanced, mentally lucid. I can only hope he begins coaching, passing on his learnings to the next generation. Wouldn’t that be something. Wouldn’t that be a denouement worthy of a legend.

Cus had a lot of help too. It wasn’t all Cus. Cus was a genius when it came to the psychie of a man, especially a man who wanted to become a fighter. He was old school, had street smarts, and an infinite amount of wisdom. And he saw something in Teddy Atlas, just like he saw something in Tyson. Teddy and Cus were on another planet when it came to boxing and what it took for a man to be successful in the sport. Listening to those to talk, about boxing, about life, about anything, was the best education a man could get. And it was free, and to say it was captivating is an extreme understatement.

Great comment brother. I hope Tyson truly finds Christ because he did have him in him for a while it seemed, he was such a good and decent young man before he was torn down. Unfortunately Tyson doesn't even know the Bible well at all even though he is well read in so many other areas. Maybe he will some day and drop the horrible movement of Islam although I think he just follows it in image and not in faith because it is something different as many do without truly knowing what it is or much about it.

Vyrisus lets be real though, this was unfortunate. Though in Mikes reality of this Father figure replacement and how childlike he was (reflective of high functioning autism, his eye movement, his exreme dedication in the early periods, the idiolising etc). Plus you realise the ridiculous fundemental change he went through that essentially transitioned him from an all round fighter implementing the cus damato style like no one has ever done before or after to then being a brawler 7months after the spinks fight. It is not hard to see the major difference from the opening bell in the tyson that fought Bruno in 89 and beyond vs the cus d'amato/rooney tyson that fought in 88 87 86 etc. It is kinda funny actually when you look at it. The way he'd just put two gloves over his chin and walk to then take punishement from jabs watching his fore-head snap back constantly then throw lazy power hooks. Tbh many fighters like Holmes even Ribalta ffs expressed they could bring down that immobile stationary Tyson from 89+. And this is bearing in mind that Holmes (though older) could barely land on tyson during the entire fight he had vs the cus tyson. In fact the only significant punch he landed was a flush counter that came in, that pretty much did nothing becuase it was the first considerable landed shot. Then we take into account a way older larry goes the full distance with a prime holyfield and lands well though ofcorse loses UD. He's more famous for his fall and fundemental change.

To this day we love Mike, and went through it all with him, laughed with him, cried with him, experienced the championship with him. Tyson is loved by his fans, and that is what makes him great. Holyfield, Lewis, none of them have this type of following, because Mike is a true champion. This is what defines greatness. We love ya Mike!

Hollywood will only make it now if you select the actor for cus as a transgender feminist plus make him a black woman with opression issues from first world problems. The cast must all be minorities and the actor who plays mike tyson must be a syrian refugee with a golden white skin colour. 90% of the story should be about preaching leftwing politics and 10% real life speeches but edited so they don't trigger or offend anyone and in essence should not have any logical or grounded real world principle attached to them because it may traumatize a minority.

If you listen so some of his interviews , when he is not mad or should i say on the defense . Mike has more sense than people credit him . I honestly feel that had he never left Roonie . He would have retired undefeated . An never would have went to prison . I could go on an on about Mike . I just wish the world leave him alone an let him live on . Mike Tyson reminds me a lot of Elvis. First, they both became super stars when they were still in their teens. Elvis was 19 when he hit it big. And like Elvis, Tyson didn't really have a chance to develop as an adult. He was always protected by his guys, the Memphis Mafia, and spoiled by his mother. With Mike, he grew up in the streets, and never learned anything but how to knock people out, albeit by a master. I am only glad to see him grow into a man-intelligent, wise, and humble, a tribute to everything good and noble in life, passed on to him by one of the greatest trainers of all time. This story had a happy ending.

this is a brilliant but tragic story. it's the rise and fall of a champion. Mike had the good fortune to be discovered by Cus, but mike as a perfect freak of nature with an ability no heavyweight had or may have--he was super fast for a heavyweight, and every punch he threw was explosive. moreover, he was TRULY unique in being able to actually hit as hard with right or left hands. he was short, but as a result, compensated by lunging into each punch. also due to height disadvantage, always immediately fighting inside--he was like fly paper. all over his opponent from the bell. he never stepped back. there is NO QUESTION he will be the most unique heavyweight of our time or for all time. he really studied all the greats and put the best techniques together with his own flair--all that said, he would've never gotten that far or that high without the TECHNIQUES taught to him by Cus, Rooney and Atlas. equally Jim Jacobs. he had a great team and no man is that great on his own. and he proved that by losing speed and conditioning and all the infamous head movement once he separated from them. sadly, it was that same team that tried to protect him from bad decisions OUTSIDE the ring, but once he got the belts, he screwed them and himself. that really is the bottom line. Fortunately, everyone remembers his greatness in the 80s and he's still popular so has had some new opportunities in films and video games. nothing compared to the 300 million he blew but at least he seems very happy today as a family man and a vegan vegetarian. his book and show 'the undisputed truth' is authentic and raw. mike also has a foundation to help inner city kids. i think there are still great days ahead for Mike now, he had to lose everything, but we all do sometimes in our own way to become better. either way, Mike Tyson will always be synonymous with controversy but will be no less a LEGEND.

His advices should be enshrined, for they are the epitome of a life led by principles, discipline, and the refusal to surrender to hardship. His words shall continue to guide many lost souls and dismayed hearts, long after he had left this world for Heaven…*

His life could've been so much different.. I don't speak just about his career but about his personal life aswell. I just can't find an answer to this question . Did Team Tyson try to speak to him after 1989 to return to them , or maybe after prison 1995? What did he say , what was his answer. Or maybe did he consider returning to them at any point in his career? To this day i think a mentally healthy Mike under Rooney could beat Holyfield and Lewis in their fights..

Anybody would be pissed off if that happened to them . He may have fought godlike but the man is a human being. He will always be a champ in my eyes because of everything he has gone through he still gets up to go another round. Much love Mike .. Thank you for the inspiration and entertaining us fans.

Extract from an article on Mikes finances. Tyson's outlandish expenses, there's one payout for which he can be saluted. That's the $13,000 he paid for the monthly home care of 96-year-old Camille Ewald, the longtime partner of late boxing trainer Cus D'Amato. Though not related, Tyson has referred to Ewald, who died last year, as his mother.

Great video. Thank you. Mike Tyson, if you happen to see this, we see you, was see the good in you, we see what Cus saw. You have character. Cus would be proud. You faced demons in your life, you removed them from your life, and you went forward.

It's sad. You watch this you can understand mike more. He was basically an orphan. Luckily he met the guy in youth jail who introduced him to Cus. The guy in jail who was his first boxing mentor saved him, but mike took the initiative and told him he wanted to learn boxing. Kids like mike who don't like to talk don't lack courage. All kids don't if you encourage them right. Mike deep down is a good kid at heart. Its too bad Cus died and then don king came along. Mike should go back and help under privileged kids like himself if he has time after he fixes and takes care if his family first. Take care of your own family before you think you can help others. Cus would be so proud if he did.
