I'm going to get my local bookstore to order this. I'm only 44 but I am heavily influenced by him as a drummer. He was absolutely amazing!

Jerry Nolan is my all time favorite drummer. Rip Jerry, and thank you for the music.

He's the GREATEST Punk Rock drummer, and one of the GREATEST Rock'nRoll drummers ever! He understood how to drum in the groove, and make people move; just like the early drummers of Rocknroll: Little Richard and Buddy Holly's drummers. He played with such attitude and swagger, that was authentic and hard to find. He conveyed himself on some of the most influence RocknRoll albums and songs that changed music: New York Dolls, "Jet Boy", "Trash", Personality Crises". "Chatterbox". LAMF: "Baby Talk", "All by myself", "One Track Mind". The Whores of Babylon. He complimented Johhny Thunders talent, just as Charlie Watts compliments Keith.

I am glad there are still people like urself, who has the knowledge & passion to tell the story of these great influences who are so little spoke about ...

About time somebody gave props to 1 of rocks most influential drummers.

Let’s not forget Billy Murcia!! He was on the first Dolls record!! Died tragically.......

Billy Died in '72, then Jerry Joined late '72 then the band recorded their debut album in early/mid '73. Billy was not on the album. Billy however is on some early demo's and also on the London '72 Demo's.

Nolan was the superior drummer, but Murcia gelled better with Arthur Kane imo. With Murcia, they sounded slower but also tighter.

I just finished the book last nite..wow..what a ride..what a life...Enjoyed it.

Thank you for the book I couldn't put it down I was born to late to see any of it so thank you. You brought him to life for me. Your appreciation of him is so clear . I believe his drumming was a cut above many if not all of the time and to be honest now . You are right to understand he was a character that doesn't come along very often.

I remember I got the cassette of the Dolls first album and was just a kid but I was way ahead of everyone I knew musically and style wise

This is a great book!! It's a goddamn shame that bands like Poison, Motley Crue and other bands of that Ilk made $$$$$$$ while John and Jerry had to struggle to survive.

Yep mate Aurthur was so miffed and i dont blame him rip he fkn started it and was a true rock n roll.gentle.giant all those dreadful hair bands that i guiltly loved as a teen and then i found out about the dolls b4 thunders died then everyting changed 4 me till this day😎

@@williekiso3971 That was some of it but the music they were playing just wasn't mainstream yet back when they were doing it. One percent of the population probably new about The Heartbreakers in 1976 while 98% new who Peter Frampton was at the time. In many genres throughout history the originals are often dead before their thing even hits. Not saying it's right, just saying. Yes they were on H but they also never had proper mgmt and marketing.

I could listen to and read about this kind of stuff all day.

Great upload. I knew Jerry Nolan and met him a few times in London in the mid/late '80s. We met once that he and Johnny Thunders got ripped off, were gear-sick and I scored for them; they were grateful and we became friends. One afternoon in particular, we spent 2 hours in a park, sitting in the sun waiting for the "man" and he told me stories, etc.. I learned a few things from him. He was a great guy and a powerhouse of a drummer, a true rock'n'roller. I haven't read the book yet... Thanks for posting this

I was the tour manager for Levi in the Rockettes in the very Late 70s when Jerry Nolan was the drummer for them. Are used to take him to his methadone program every morning.

That's a great comment man. Really enjoyed reading it. I was a bit of a musician so always dressed in whatever style we were doing, I wasnt even alive when the Dolls came around, but like you said at the end "I bet you feel like a million bucks". They certainly look like they felt it, right? Love when blokes can see that other blokes look cool and it doesn't turn into jealousy. You just enjoy the view. C'mon though my friend.. You must have a favourite suit? Jerry, or people like him feel as comfortable (even if the shoes hurt.. Lol) because THAT'S who they were. All the best man.

Definitely by design, not by accident my man. "profiling" as Curt said. It's now seen as "posey" to have fashion at the forefront but think of any great music movement.. Last one Im thinking of is early 00ish NYC scene (the strokes et Al) all had a "look" too. I remember playing a small club I was playing lead and singing at the same time and let's just say I had an off night (too much Irish courage) and my rhythm player said to me "if you were an ugly c£&t you'd be fired tonight" 😂

I'm at the end of the book, EXCELLENT book, highly recommended, very well researched, I do not know the author. Jerry was a great drummer. I played the Rat, opened for The Real Kids.

Stranded in the Jungle is a great read. If you're thinking about getting it,do it now. You won't be disappointed.

Jerry's highly effective drumming kept that lovely Dolls chaos together...... Unlike the majority of drummers , he also was entertaining to watch. Although it's understandable these caricature 80's hair bands had to be mentioned for completist reasons, and the influence the Dolls had.....they far from deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the New York Dolls....dragging the Dolls down to their caricature con level......

Like the Chet Baker bio in 2002, this immensely enjoyable, well-written book goes deep with no apologies, soft soap or varnish. Until now, I never considered Nolan’s drumming by itself although I’ve been hearing it for decades on Dolls and Thunders records. Here, the Krupa influence is explained with a musician’s insight. One of the best books about rock music out there. Five stars and a quarter gram.

Hans and Chet knew one another. And then I discovered similarities between the 50's jazz "cats" and the 80's punkers. It was an interesting journey/

Great talk Curt! This Year's Model is the first or second album I ever owned. Had a huge influence on me growing up in Montreal! For some reason I'm only now discovering New York Dolls and Heartbreakers. They really deserve to be in the Hall of Fame

billy was only in the band for a few months and was a poor drummer. jerry really took the dolls to the next level and they defined their career with him in the band.

Great! Great story telling. Loved all the details.

Jerry can never be replaced because of his ultra-powerful, unique & perfect drumming style. I went to many Heartbreakers shows, even the early ones at Max's Kansas City with Richard on bass. It really inspired me to start my first band at age 20 named THE THE in 1977 & we certainly got around town playing all the hot venues with the big boys of that era due to strong management by Jane Friedman. Like so many other bands that were inspired by the Dolls & Heartbreakers, it couldn't have happened without Jerry's amazing drumming! *Thank God there's a lot of great live material/bootlegs from Jerry that sound great! From the Heartbreakers to the Idols, the London Cowboys, N.Y. Dolls, etc... And now there's this great L.A.M.F. box-set which is great, finally we can hear the cleaned up (original) L.A.M.F. album from '77, and a lot of demo's, alternative mixes, and the lost '77 mixes. A shame Jerry and Johnny never had the chance to hear all this in their lifetime.. I'm gonna read the book for shure, I'm very curious about Jerry. He's an outstanding drummer, but everybody's focused a lot on Thunders, so I always wondered about Jerry. Great reading, I enjoyed it from beginning to end. THNX! :)*

There are a few excellent remixes of LAMF which are at least to me perfectly satisfactory. Nobody in the band should feel unhappy about the best mixes. 99% of those who had the original version would have listened to the later versions which are very good indeed, so to me for that reason nothing is really lost.

👍👍 I will take the New York Dolls over any band they influenced. But I am very happy to have the Ramones and the Sex Pistols

We now know that the problem of sound quality on L.A.M.F. was entirely a fault in the mastering. Jungle Records has obtained the original master tape and is releasing L.A.M.F. as it should have sounded in '77. BTW, when I played Heartbreakers live at max's kansas city, Volume 2, for Johnny Thunders, he told me, "Finally, somebody gets it right."

I agree. Volume 2 with Jerry on drums is the best they ever sounded on record. I still listen to that.

I'm from Detroit (blow the reveille)! *The NYD's became a much tighter band the instant Jerry took the drum stool.* They actually started playing in a _'pocket'_ from time to time. He had a unique _'hard-rock-swing'._ No offense to Billy M. But, it was like night and day. re: _'hair-bands-stealin':_ Just the look. There were the rare, actual songwriting attempts (e.g. 'Talk Dirty To Me' _LoL~°_ ). But, that _'Shangra-La/Stone/MC5/Stooge/thang'_ the Dolls wrote to was *wa-a-ay* above those poodle rockers' pay grade! - Dave B.

I'm a hip hop head cali via Detroit..I remember the dolls/Alice cooper having a fan base in detroit when I was young...Seems like detroit got a thing for rockers in makeup 🤔🤔🤔

Artists/entertainers often want to be considered "the original" at what they do. In truth, all borrowed from predecessors. The fact is, those that followed the Dolls did a lot more right than the Dolls did, and a larger audience was there to appreciate them.

Raw and Crude is Brilliant!! You gotta be raw and ya gotta be crude. It's when to know when to stop! That's the Brilliance!

Gonna buy your book soon.

Nolan was old friends with Kiss drummer Peter Criss.

I WAS THE WEST COAST TOUR MANAGER FOR THE ROCKATS IN 1979 WHEN THEY WERE BEING MANAGED BY SEAGAL/SAMUAL MGNT. AND HAD MOVED TO HOLLYWOOD. I DROVE JERRY TO METHADONE TREATMENT EVERY MORNING FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. I SET THOSE PINK DRUMS UP NUMEROUS TIMES. I STILL GET MESSAGES FROM SMUTTY NOW AND THEN. Oh the good old days!

Best mix of lamf imo is the tony james/thunders revisited releases in 84/85...very powerful, nice and even mix!

I wasn't even aware of this book and it's 2021! But it's NOT MY FAULT!!

I've seen the Ramones a few times and they were great but they could have been legendary with Jerry Nolan.

Nolan would’ve locked horns with Johnny Ramone - and probably decked him - within the first rehearsal.

In 1974 I met them at the Little Hippodrome on 56th..Johnny wasn't there..

? Great historical account of 70s scene which I was a part of playing for Regina Richards and red hot ...

I found the book interesting but if you have read anything about the Dolls or NY punk, some passages will be familiar having been covered elsewhere but are used in a creative way here.There was an odd bit about masturbation which recalls Charles Cross telling us what was going through Kurt Cobain's mind in his final moments in his book 'Heavier Than Heaven'. No one can really know..How Weiss was privy to this (assumed) private moment of Nolan's left me scratching my head. BUT there wasnt a book about Jerry Nolan specifically and this filled that void. Overall as a drummer myself I enjoyed the book and am glad it was written.Also, I had no idea about what really caused Jerry's death and was surprised to learn the truth-courtesy of this book . I would recommend checking it out if you are a 70s punk/rock & roll fan.

I only met Jerry backstage at Bookies Club 870 one time. Him & Johnny were both high as a kite & trying to get me to snort speedballs. Glad I didn't.

I think you mean Arthur Kane, the bassist. Billy Murcia was the orig. drummer for the Dolls, who OD's in London, etc.

Funny because I've used New York Dolls tracks as reference tracks while recording my own band

Jerry got to see Eddie Cochran before he died. The mid-late 70's guys couldn't make the transition to the 80's. The Ramones weren't popular until 1992.

The Pistols - the band members themselves - chose Chris Thomas for the reasons you cited. Everyone thinks that they were a bunch of chaotic stumblebums. Nuh uh.. They knew what they wanted and they went after it. Fantastic sound.

Jerry had REAL style, he looked equally good in his continental suit and pompadour as he did looking like yer mam on the razzle on the Dolls first LP cover, nah he just had it. Incredible to think just how great The Dolls were, they all had a sense of all style, even Arthur Kane, who kooks like a hairy crab! Someone at the record co. or studio was a 'tard because normally if you hand the master tapes to a competent mastering studio/engineer, you end up with a releasable product. Or someone was trying to save money, or steal the mastering money, which from reading In Cold Blood, sounds kind of likely. Most albums that go into Sterling Sound for example, in NYC, come out sounding phenomenal. LOL I think somebody wanted to sabotage the Heartbreakers, is what I think.

Actually dig *everything* that's original and delivered with conviction . Even Lydon admitted to be charmed by Van Der Graaf Generator and Hawkwind . To actually mention Quay Lewd wannabees like Mutly Crud and Twisted Pisster in the same breath as The Dolls .........?? Anyway ,....apart for heartland usa , pink wasn't so shocking.....for someone raised on 50's rock'n roll ....whose main ambition was to maybe one day own a pink Cadillac . People weren't so affronted by pink especially since Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd ....? Opiates kill ambition . Jerry (and Johnny) wasn't as lucky as Keith Richards who had someone like Jagger to take the reigns.

No....The Dolls were never managed with strategy....Girls across the US loved them...Otherwize...2 other important seminal bands....Magic Tramps & Jonathan Richman.... ( shared bill w Dolls at Mercer Art Center ) were lending influence to the Punk Scene...in fact personel from Modern Lovers, ended up in Talking Heads...Chris Stein was associated w Magic Tramps.........

The Dolls and Heartbreakers had great influence on other bands, fashion and culture but what kind of influence was that? What was the ethos the Dolls and Heartbreakers were expressing? Narcissism, addiction, depression, self-hate, isolation and emotional suicide are the results of the Dolls/ Heartbreakers lifestyle. Where will idolizing the Dolls / Heartbreakers take you? Do you want those things for yourself?

And the Dolls are *still* not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Lets not even go there.

Yea he's right just went for a listen the drums are dead, sounds like he's hitting pizza boxes, why no reverb on the snare at least? To bad, why do so many New York rockers die of the big C? It could be heavy EMF waves known to do that.

Fame is not a raisin to live and lotta people die by fame....Elvis, for exemple

The would air 30 second of each the "TIP 5" contenders after the "Countdown". 30 seconds of Dolls that changed my life. At this point I'm 13 years old wondering what the hell happened to my favorites Alice Cooper, Sweet and Slade. It was just before punk...and disco

Oh god, winging. It's embarrassing. People are what they are. you can't wish it any other way. He was great. He had success. It was alright.

The band had what it took, unfortunately the recording was very poor compared to other albums of that time. Its a good record but its definitely covered in mudd. Sounds muffled. Strange. The songs are so good it still shines though

The Dolls and Heartbreakers will never get in rnr hof. Bc thunders sabotaged his career, his drug use. Even Nolan. Dolls took alot from Stooges

If Nolan had joined Kiss, or if Criss had been able to learn anything from him, they might’ve made a decent record. But you can’t teach it. You’ve got it or you don’t.
