Cursed Yamaha YZ490 Dirtbike runs backwards!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It is hard to believe but yes indeed the motor on my YZ490 Dirtbike is running in reverse. Oh this should be a fun one.

I worked as a mechanic for agricultural tractor dealership, and my shop foreman was working on an antique tractor that someone had brought in for repair. He finished it up and when he put it in reverse to back it out of the shop, it moved forward. We quickly figured out that the motor was running backwards. One of the reasons the tractor had come to shop was because it needed a new starter. When the parts man ordered the starter he ordered one for the wrong year model. The difference between the year models was that one year had the starter on the left hand side of the engine going into the front of the bell housing and the other had the starter on the right hand side of the engine behind the bell housing. So depending on what year you had, the starter was wired to rotate either clockwise or counter clockwise. The tractor started and ran fine with eight reverse gears and two forward gears.

Wow mate! I can’t believe the bad luck you are having with this one. I’m more worried about the smashed gears and the crap they will have produced in the engine. Which gears were they that were smashed up? Maybe you could talk us through how they broke due to it running backwards while you have the case off?? Just turning it over by hand to show the rotation and where they couldn’t turn etc? I’d be interested to see. Keep going dude. One bike at a time 👍

Yep, 2 stroke engines can run backwards. The timing is off. When I was a kid I had an 85 YZ80. The flywheel had to be replaced because it got hairline cracks around the rivets. I saved up all summer of 91 and bought a new flywheel. After replacing it,the damn engine ran backwards.😳😳 I couldn't figure out why, neither could my Grandpa. We took it up to the Yamaha shop to have them fix it. BTW, what a pain in the ass trying to stuff a YZ80 into the trunk of a 78 Chrysler Lebaron.🤣🤣 About 15 minutes later,we just got home and the phone rings.. Yer bike is fixed, you can come pick it up now.🙂 I( I was so happy because at that point I hadn't ridden it in almost 2 months.) I used to ride it every day. I didn't think I would get it back for at least a few days. Grandpa says ok,what's the damage. They said one of the guys fixed it on his lunch break and it was on the house. Yeah that Yamaha/Kawasaki shop was the best. They even helped load it back into my Grandpa's trunk. He just said that the timing was off.

@@TNTMOTO I hear you there. I just got back into riding last year. I came across a 90 Kawasaki KLR 250 at a garage sale. The bike seemed like it didn't really need anything, but it sat for a long period of time. When I say long the tabs on the license plate were 2004. At this point I'm probably into it more than it's worth. I ended up replacing the tires, front brake pads and the fluid. Replaced the muffler because the afttermarket pne it came with wouldn't come apart w/o breaking it. I replaced the handle bars with taller Renthall bars. Replaced the air filter with a UNI filter. When I did that it I had to rejet the carburetor. After I changed the muffler and the air filter,it was hard to start and ran lean..then after I finally started riding it, the fork seals started leaking,so I replaced those too. Then the sensor on the kickstand got bent. That's so you don't forget to take off riding with the kick stand down. The bike won't move if the kickstand is down. That was on the expensive side.. New mirrors, grips rebuilt the front brake caliper because it was sticky, it's got fairly low mileage for being 32 years old. 8k miles on the ODO. I adjusted the valves too and changed the plug and the coolant, oil change. That coolant was probably original. Now that I got it back in good working order I ride it to work on nice days. Putt around on trails a little bit. I didn't like the front suspension. It was just too soft. I made some spring preload spacers out of some thick PVC pipe. Bikes are just like cars. Leaving them sit for long periods of time is bad. All the little stuff degrades and needs replacement.

Just flip stator coil around, should fix your problem

Yes moving the stator coil to the bottom of the stator plate would have fixed the problem. I was sent the wrong rotor. After changing to the proper rotor. the engine ran the correct way.

timing is off, had a 1985 yamaha it200 that would do this, got a stator from a 490 and was off a few degrees, but finally got a service manual from yamaha to get everything squared away.
