Curriculum for the Samurai: Conflicted World of Medieval Japanese Warriors

Yoshiaki Shimizu, Ph.D., Frederick Marquand Professor of Art and Archaeology, Emeritus, Princeton University, and Guest Scholar, Getty Research Institute, delivered the annual Mildred Schnitzer Lecture in Asian Art on October 6, 2013. It was the opening lecture for the Museum's special exhibition Samurai! Armor from the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Collection, on view October 5, 2013 - January 12, 2014.

    I appreciate the lecture, but, in my opinion, it lacked focus a bit. It was very interesting to learn that China held Japanese swords in high regard since the 11th century, though.

    Curious as to why he never mentioned the Roman Catholic Jesuit’s role in inciting rebellion and civil war in Japan.

    Scholars and their tedious run up to the featured subject. Can they trim the intro from 20% of the presentation to maybe a less boring 5%?
