As a business owner I live what you’ve explained here every day. It’s grieving to see good businesses that have been in the game many years come to the end of the road due to factors beyond any of our control. You said it best when you stated that when one door closes another will open. I firmly believe that. I have the greatest admiration and appreciation for Not only the Goodsons but what they represent - all the hard working Americans that have made our country one of the greatest places on earth to live and work. Thanks for your comments.

As I recall, you asked your dad about his plans for the future of the company a couple years ago and as you said at the time he told you that "it was his..... and was always gonna be his..." Which in turn made you make some decisions for your future. Although it may not have seemed like it at the time, what he said was a true blessing because look what you've done since then.... Good for you, Tim. I've enjoyed the ride so far and look forward to future stuff.

I’m hearing that a bunch of guys won’t be going back into the woods after mud season here in Maine. Logging has been a tough industry to be successful in but the high fuel prices right now are the last nail in the coffin for many operations. It’s hard not to get political about this because 2 years ago fuel was less than half of what it is right now.

Bobby’s job swamp logging has a much higher fuel bill and higher maintenance cost plus with the Riglewood mill not buying hardwood anymore he had to truck pulpwood even farther. There is no way he could continue without being compensated for the increase in fuel cost.

I think Bobby has to spend a lot more than other loggers to get a board foot of timber out of the woods. Plus he has to truck it a lot farther since there's no mills in his area.

In the start of 2021 I knew these ripple effects were going to happen, I’m Not a logger but I work in the construction trade, when I’m generally doing roofs for 30-40 new builds a year and then only doing 4-5, hardware stores were out of lumber and having to pay upwards of 70$ a sheet for 7/16 osb, talking with loggers who feed our mills were knocking down trees to keep their employees busy while everyone else was shutting down, piling logs on haul roads to go to the mill only to be told that they logs that had been sitting for over 6 months the mills would not accept them because of the spruce beetles that had gotten into the sitting drying logs. Thousands of loads of logs were lost and the loggers who spent that money to keep everything going lost out big, a few company’s closed shop just trying to keep up with the way things were before 2020, right now mills are full of cut lumber ready to be delivered but trucking company’s are going under because they have signed contracts that won’t allow them to raise prices to cover fuel costs who are now forcing themselves into bankruptcy, in every line of business everyone is going into cut throat business running just to stay afloat right now and running my own business is getting hard to do, everyone is stuck pre 2020 prices and now no one wants to pay 2022 prices, it’s either take everyone to court to get paid and lose even more money over that or just work for nothing, it’s not just the loggers who are feeling it, everyone is feeling it and the only ones to blame is the governments we have in charge

I do take some logs to shaving plant and if it didn't pay good I pile it up and burn. I pray for us all who are out here working still. Have a great day be safe.

A lot of the loggers in my area are parking their equipment. It’s sad. My dad closed his home building and developing business he started in 1979 during the housing crisis. He was 54 yrs old. He went ahead and retired. I was his superintendent. It hurt me because I wasn’t established like he was. I recovered though. Probably about to go through the same thing again. Luckily this time most everything I own is paid for including my home. I learned not to run out and buy a new crew cab diesel truck just because I could.

The mill that we work for is massive, I mean worldwide. They are Home Depot's biggest supplier of specialty lumber. I won't name them but they have a couple of jobs they made bad decisions in buying in my area and they are on their knees needing them cut. They are offering us huge prices to get them cut, but at the good job that we are on now they don't want to help a bit with fuel. That is another way this affects loggers, it gives the big money the advantage over the loggers and can force us to do things we don't need to be doing. In my area there is a shortage of loggers and a huge demand for wood so for now you can wiggle enough money out of the mills to maintain but I don't know how long it will last cause our consulting forester said that poplar and red oak prices have started falling already. Pine is still up for now here. Saying this will separate the men from the boys is a crappy thing to say but the wolves are sure gonna pull their share out before this all goes through the wash. Only good thing is that this world has a veracious appetite for wood and someone is always going to have to get it. Just don't know how many of us there will be...

I believe over the next few years you will see a lot of loggers shut down or go out of business, which will cause the mills to have no other option but to raise the rates they are paying for contract cutting and trucking up to a reasonable level. If more loggers would come together and refuse to work for these barely break even rates the mills have been paying for 15+ years, this whole situation would have probably been avoided. Overall I think it will be better for the logging community as a whole once the dust settles. If a company has gone for years without raising their rates, while absorbing the yearly rising costs of equipment, employees, fuel, other consumables, etc. they have nobody to blame but themselves when they can't break even. Logging businesses need to be run FOR PROFIT just like any other business and until companies take a stand and refuse to work for anything less than profitable (hopefully very profitable) rates, they will continue to be broke and inevitably fail sooner or later

Very scary times ahead when a SINGLE INPUT can cripple an industry. Bobby’s point that drove home for me was when he said fuel costs had risen to roughly 68% of a truck’s revenue. A far cry from the 25% that was rule of thumb when he started. Doesn’t leave any room for the rising costs of other inputs.

Its tough for everyone right now. My fuel bill is no where near what your dad has to spend on fuel for all the equipment but for my 1 man operation it is a lot. I spent $350 on fuel the other day for a 1/2 tank in my truck, 25gal for my transfer tank, and 15 more gallons for another truck. Last year that would have been a months worth of fuel. I am not able to charge the customer anymore so that comes out of my thin profits. Most of my customers are on a budget, people think I can just charge them more but I can't. I can only help them and pray that my customers and I can get through this and be profitable once things turn around.

They didn’t want any timber land and no forester’s or logging crews to own!! They rolled up in East Texas with beating down the landowner and timber hauling industry and did it for about 7 years and now they’ve can’t keep employees or log’s coming in but the new wood industry mills are flourishing. Thanks for the competition.Large corporation’s don’t carry about the smaller business people…!!!! I have seen the lumber 🪵 price go up 400% and the logging only go up a few dollars per ton and the landowners have just got a little jump on price at the stump!!!! Very sad and disgusting to see what happens when large corporations drive the little people down. !!!!!

In the beginning of 2020 I got a real promising job with morbark. Did all the pre-employment things, got measured for uniforms, got my tools ready to move and waited. Got a call two days before my big toolbox move and my future boss was dead honest with me”hey man, I hate to have to do this, but I can’t bring you on right now until this pandemic comes to an end…I’ll keep in touch with you and when things return to normal, you can start. Shouldn’t be more than a month or two, just hang tight.” I last spoke with the owner in October of 2020, right before my birthday and he broken heartedly told me they would be auctioning off the family business. Boy am I bummed that I didn’t get that job, but also incredibly greatful. When that door closed, I had put in some maintenance mechanic applications for some Fortune 500 companies…on a whim. I got my dream career and plan to retire from my current job. Unreal money, unreal benefits. Sometimes the world works in mysterious ways.

It has been very interesting to watch you grow your tree service work business. Lots of people don't understand how much of our economy is connected to the cost of diesel fuel. @@bryanchipps6572 I bought red diesel here in Alabama last week for $4.78. When I first went to work for my dad in 1999, he would buy 500 gallons at a time for .50 per gallon. We were getting 5-10 dollars extra per ton for pine pulpwood and pine logs back then.

I retired back in 2013, shutting down my business after 25 years due to what I saw happening in construction. Profit margins dropping under 15% and wages rising faster with fuel, equipment, maintenance, and insurance rising by 20% or more per year. Jobs deadlines compressed as money got tight. My brother-in-law's roofing business which has been a steady income producer for 30 years hasn't landed a job in 5 months as the economy tanks due to fuel prices and groceries affect the everyday people. I feel the crunch is still coming be it end of this year or next something has to give!

Hey Tim. I never comment but lm 57 years old and like you l grew up working for my dad in the house building industry. I made a career of it and up till now it has been good but not sure how much longer I am going be able to stay in it. All the big national companies are coming in to Baton Rouge area where l am and they are killing us. Materials are so expensive and hard to get and insurance is outrageous. I feel your pain buddy. Thanks for taking the time each day to shoot and edit these videos , l know it is time consuming. Also I know what you mean about the girls growing up. My babe got married in January. Me and momma are trying to adjust to a empty house, but the flip side of that is GRAND KIDS. JUST WAIT CAUSE THE BEST IS YET TO COME. have a great day.

Same here. We closed during the housing market crash and only built a few pre sales since. Luckily we could pay the bank what little we owed before we close. Big companies like Adam’s Homes and their illegal alien crews put a hurt on us too. We built 50+ houses per year in the 2k sq Ft. range and couldn’t compete anymore. You couldn’t buy land to develop or even 2-3 lots at a time when we used to buy whole sectors of subdivisions.

@@livewithnick yep. And all the south of the border labor has ruined the labor side of the industry. Used to be family's for the labor side for most every craft and it was generation handed down but that has all stopped. They bring the busses in now and block the subdivision entrances and pick up some that doesn't get away but the next morning there are twice as many to replace what they picked up the day before. Time for the AMERICAN PEOPLE TO STAND UP AND SAY WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH!!!!!!!!

As an old logger I somewhat understand the logging business and can’t see the business surviving as long as fuel prices are what they are. The local guys are telling me that they have to price a job primarily on distance to the log yard now because of fuel. It is $5.60 a gallon here in Southwest Virginia! Something will have to happen or this nation will be belly up in 2 1/2 years! Even Elon Mersk who owns Tesla said we should be trying to produce more oil at this time! It seems Washington is a gathering place for morons anymore! Best of luck to all loggers including yourself!

States need to start drilling regardless of eo's. This makes the more rural land worth even less to people interested in working the land. The bluebloods moving in from the cities could care less. Our petrodollar relies on cheap oil.

Saw one of our biggest local loggers park his equipment a few years ago due to regulations and breach of contract with ,at the time, one of the biggest producers of lumber and paper products. He sold everything, sued the hell out of the corporation that breached their contract and retired. But he can’t sit still. Another large business in our area employs him a couple days a week now because it by their choice, not his. He didn’t care to go back to work 6 days a week, 4:00 in the morning. We’re all feeling it and knew it was coming( most of us anyway). Anything to do with petroleum has gone stupid on the prices. Glad you’ve diversified in what you can do to hustle that income. It’s the only way most of us will keep what we have. Drain the swamp !

I’m in trucking, it’s getting tight. I have 1 truck in the shop that’s gonna cost 32k to rebuild motor. It’s been down 6 weeks and gonna be another 4, so they say before Cat will have the rebuild kit. Luckily for my driver, I was down a driver so had another truck he could get in. Purchased 18 tires last week for different truck and trailer $8500 and put brakes on yet another truck, brake drums last year were right at $80 each now are $170. Every thing is almost double and I don’t even want to get started on fuel. LETS GO BRANDON! Feel for Bobby, always liked him and his crew. My son in Law was the trooper that worked the accident with one of his trucks.

Its really is getting tough in the forestry business. Everybody thinks we are crazey for still running old timber jackes and strait tks but u can get by with 25 gal a week on fuel. Per skidder that is. We try not to have to haul to far. So its still working for us. For now anyway.

Logged for 20 years just got out the first of the year. Just couldn't do it anymore.. couldn't find help. Hard toget the parts needed to fix equipment and couldn't afford insurance either for the equipment or for employees. So made the decision and hung it up I miss it but not the of worry of trying to keep going and will I be able to make the payment on my equipment. Sold most of that so that worry is gone but still have to make living back to long haul trucking got. Desiel in the blood. Good luck out their to all of the small business owners.

As a landowner one thing Bobby said that bothered me was something to the tune of a logger has to make his money when he buys his timber from the landowner. Translation pay the landowner as little as possible. To me we all should be able to make money. Don’t just pass the screwing down the line.

Same as a farmer in Wisconsin we spent $37,000 on fuel last week at $4:89 for off road “red dye” diesel... it lasted bout a week. I’m guessing since fertilizer has tripled and quadruple since last year it safe to say we’re gonna be spending over $500,000 in a month. Things gotta change fast.
