I’m glad I came across this video. I’m recapping an old regulated supply and thought I would add an NTC. I had one picked out but I did not check to make sure it would work for the capacitance in the supply. This may have saved me a very short lived thermistor.

Some NTC manufacturers like the NTC10D20 have no energy specification nor any voltage rating in their datasheets. There is only a stady state current as a hint for the destruction limit. Is there a way to guess the energy or do need I to destroy one and measure to be sure ?

Hi. Limiting inrush current is just for protect device isnt it? It still pulls high current but protects device. Is there any chance to limit current from home plug on start? I have a led 1200w power supply for my lipo charger. Everytime i plug it, home's circuit breaker operated just for one time. After I open the circuit, everthing is great. It never failed while working. I think charging capacitors in power supply pulls too much current at start. I dont know. A friend told me turning on circuit breaker for one time isnt big deal but i am looking for solution.

Supply output is adjustable and im using at 48-50v input is 230v

Circuit breaker is 220v/360 16a. One source says my supply has 50a inrush current.

@@marcoscimbom You could place a larger NTC to limit the current. Another old method is to put a lightbulb in series - which is essentially an NTC:). When power is applied, the light bulb lights, then goes dim as current continues to flow, so first when the light is cold it has higher resistance then drops with temp. Another option is to place a filter in line and the inductors will limit the inrush current. Let me know what you try. But, I think you are right in that it is the capacitors pulling the current at start-up.

@@KissAnalog thank you so much for answer. i thought putting a lightbulb, its a common advice but my main concern is not protecting the supply. I have no deep knowledge, do you think putting a lightbulb decrease the current which came from relay? Maybe i should use 50a relay for one power outlet.

You could get a relay with same lower level current for better protection, but get one meant for motors - something with slow reacting- - time delay type.
