Curly was a beast, a trooper. Most people during that time didn't survive one stroke. (Shoot some people today don't survive one stroke.) He went through several of them fighting, throwing punches. He might've lost his battle, but he didn't go down without a fight. And for that alone, I respect him whole heartly.

@@racheldianeames3729 A lot of the blame can be placed on Harry Cohn, his refusal to let Curly rest was the worst mistake he ever made. Because of this Curly's health and performances took a drastic nosedive. He could not remember even the simplest dialogue; he had to be coached by Moe, line by line, until he got it right. Things got so bad for Curly that many of his lines were either given to Larry, or scrapped entirely. In the mid 40s, when Curly first started showing signs of slowing down, brother Shemp would be recruited to sub for him. Makes me wonder what Moe told live audiences when Shemp came onstage instead of Curly?

I've seen two shorts from the "Shemp Era" which had a cameo by Curly. One was in a haunted house where they were attacked by a bat with Curly's head on it, with Curly saying, "Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk," or something to that effect. The other was on a train where Curly was asleep with a clothespin on his nose. When it was removed, he snored.

Curly was supposed to have an addiitional cameo in the Shemp short Malice in the Palace as a chef, but it was cut, which is a shame. The head honchos should not have kept pushing him to keep making shorts if his health was poor. :(

Watch any of the late 45's to 1946 episodes. You can tell Curly had had strokes before. He was almost normal in this episode, but most others you could tell his voice is wrong and his scenes had to be chopped together. He had an absent stare and every movement he made was done in short straight lines, like a scene would consist of Moe giving him a cue line, Curly moved from point A to point B then they'd have to cut. I find it really hard to watch those years because it reminded me a lot of my grandpa after he'd had a stroke.

Actually Robert Gift and Wayne Limeburner, I believe Curly's stroke started way earlier in the picture, immediately after the Stooges do their "Morons" chant. If you look at Curly's face carefully in this scene, you will notice his left eye starts to drift while the right one remains stationary. He was undoubtedly experiencing a brief episode of double vision at this point. FYI my late grandfather suffered a very mild stroke the same way back in the summer of 1989 (he was 86 at the time). He was driving his car when suddenly he started complaining about double vision. Fortunately he wasn't going very fast and he was also less than three miles from the local hospital's ER -- he managed to get there driving with one eye closed.

I came back from lunch and they said, 'Curly has had a stroke.' They took him to the hospital, and here I am with about twenty people making a picture. I’ve got a half a day’s shooting and he was in everything. I was lucky. Moe had done a scene-I had a line in the scene where Moe says, 'Listen, you ... you go over and sit down...' Well, that saved my life, because the rest of the stuff that I had to shoot. There was nothing I could do about it. I'm sorry, but in my personal opinion as a Stooge fan, this should of been their last film. After Curly was gone it was nothing but remakes of old shorts and getting older and slower. Nothing against Shemp, but he just wasn't as good as Curly. Joe Besser was about as funny as watching mold grow. Curly Joe was nothing but a stand in Curly with no personality. By this time Moe and Larry were well into their 60s and it was painful to watch them. I know many would disagree with me, but once again its my opinion.

The only thing I'm going to counter was stopping after Curly got sick. Shemp was the original third stooge and Curly replaced him in 1932 when Shemp got a better job offer elsewhere. Shemp fit in flawlessly and the Stooges didnt miss a beat. When he died then it all went to hell. I dont care for Joe or Curly Joe's performances much either.

A stroke usually comes unannounced. I have had a mild stroke myself and did not notice anything beforehand. However, in this scene you can tell that Curly is no longer as relaxed as he was in earlier films. It makes the impression that playing his role was more of an effort for him than usual.

(In-universe theory) So Curly really did listen to Moe and sat down at a table for the rest of the short, guess he had enough of being crowned

It seems odd now to think Larry & Moe were both still alive when I was a teenager. They passed within months of each other in 1975.
