Thanks for stopping by! I'm sure by now you know how passionate I am about genealogy and preserving family history. I'm dedicated to teaching those wishing to learn the right way of investigating, analyzing and reporting genealogical findings.
But let's face it, genealogy is just plain fun. I love the hunt, the discovery and the excitement of sharing with others.
What you may not know (besides my lifelong passion for genealogy) is I’ve had a long career in television broadcasting and management. I’m also a wildlife and nature photographer.
Now is the time for me to take all these skills into a new side-kick. I’m using my talents in photography, television, video production, editing, and as a lifelong genealogist, combining those skills together to create the Genealogy TV and NC Ancestry as KZread channels along with similar websites and blogs.
To borrow a line from Jerry Maguire, “help me, help you.” If you like what you see and wish to help support my effort, please consider becoming a Patreon member of Genealogy TV and NC Ancestry.

Genealogy TV Community: KZread recently changed the way they allow us to monetize our channels. We now need a minimum of 1000 subscribers. Sounds daunting right? I’m fully confident I’ll get there and FULLY COMMITTED to bring free genealogy video to family historians. NC ANCESTRY and GENEALOGY TV (2 channels) is where I’ll do that. You could help me out a bunch by SUBSCRIBING. It’s all free and painless, but it would be huge for me. Oh and one more thing… it’s a crazy goal… but I’m trying to get to 1000 subs by Christmas. What a great gift that would be for me- huh? Can you help me get there? Thanks Connie.
The tip on contacting the local library is spot on. I contacted my relative's home town library about why five of my ancestors were buried on the same date and they were more than anxious to help research things for me. Turns out their graves were relocated at the same time from one cemetery to another creating a lot of misinformation about their death dates. Burial dates were being recorded as death dates when in reality they all died at separate times.

Oh fantastic. Welcome to the Genealogy family. You're going to love it.
I am 91 plus years old: My paternal grandmother is a mystery. She supposedly died in a boarding house in New York. Around 1901. But I found some info that suggested, I use that term loosely, she was buried in Ireland, her home country. County Tyrone. Using the five tips, I am going to create a Google Slide file and work on the tips. PS: I had six honest serving men; they taught me all I knew: How, and When, and Where. What, and Why, and Who. Apologies to Rudyard Kipling if I missed something. Thanks very much for the KZread videos.😁

I only started genealogy back in December and recently came across this channel. I know quite a little info on my maternal side going back to the 1820s to the 1850s but my paternal side is a bit of a mystery. My paternal great grandfathers parents are not known. I have watched some of your videos and they have helped me so far but I decided to watch this playlist from the very beginning. I hope to obtain more knowledge from this playlist. Thank you! 😊

This was a smart move. Especially as a beginner, by watching this playlist kzread.info/head/PLiMXWjHlj5RR12Cc859K76dLKP14t8sAo you'll get started on the right foot from the beginning. You might consider taking an AncestryDNA test too. When you get your results, you can look at the DNA cousin matches that are on your mothers side and look at those DNA cousins trees (when they are public). That will provide clues. Just remember to look at the sources, not all member trees are accurate. Here is my affiliate link to Ancestry DNA... although, if you wait until one of the holidays, it will be on sale. Like Mother's Day is likely the next time it will be on sale. prf.hn/click/camref:1101l4aFW/creativeref:1011l28282

Glad I found you. I started GENEALOGY after my mother passed away a few years ago and I found her GENEALOGY research papers. Camden, SC... originally from Edgemoor, SC. I went to Clemson for college and then married my middle school sweetheart who enlisted in the USAF. We have lived in Arizona, Texas and Maryland even though he was deployed on TDYs to Korea, Saudi, Turkey, UAE and Panama. I started researching as a casual hobby as a teenager and off/on thru the years. Now I am a 58 yr old retired RN with plenty of time on my hands. Thank goodness researching is now so much easier due to the internet and all the genealogy sites across all of social media. Back in the day a person had to physically go the libraries, archives, historical societies and family history centers. I still love to physically go to those places and I absolutely love walking in old cemeteries. Some times going physically to places are just better. My Mom who is turning 80 in July is coming to my granddaughter's 6th birthday party this Saturday. I have a list of questions for her and I can't wait for her answers and her family stories. Both my brothers will be here, also so we will be laughing until our sides hurt. So far my son, my mom and myself have taken the DNA test. I am giving a DNA test to my husband, daughter, both grandchildren and both my brothers for their birthday or Christmas. My Dad's sister (my aunt) is 77 yrs old and she is sending me all the records, information and photos from my dad's side. My aunt and her husband are the family historians on my dad's side. My mom is from TN and my great aunt in the middle 80's gave me that side of the family's information and the books she bought from the local historical societies. It's a treasure trove of information. I also have several books from my dad's side. My great-great-great-great uncle was a preacher during the Civil War and transported the local boys that were killed back home to Chester County, SC to their loved ones. His granddaughters' published his diaries from that time period. Sorry for the epistle but I am just so excited about getting serious in my genealogy research. I love all your videos, the website and social media pages. I have learned in a month more than I did in the 40 years prior. THANK YOU!!!

Wow-you are so fortunate to have all that info!! I have very little. I know there USED to be info, but I think when my grandmother died (1980) my parents just tossed a lot of stuff-they weren’t interested.....☹️
I love your teaching style and although I have been doing genealogy since 2005, I never had any "formal" instruction or direction, I just sort of jumped in. I decided to start with your beginners videos to learn the right way to approach genealogy, especially since I had to destroy my paternal side of my research and tree (DNA showed that the man I had researched wasn't my birth father, although my mother was married to him at the time. That is a whole 'nother story.) Anyway, I have some brick walls and thought if I go back to square one and learn how to research properly, I may be able to break through. My dilemma (and I mentioned this in another post to another video) is that I have close 2nd and 3rd DNA cousins that I have no clue how we connect although we have many shared matches. I have narrowed it down to my mother's side of the family through shared matches, however I am 74 years young, everyone in my family is long gone and there is no one to ask. I have spent hours going in circles trying to find out who is the connecting link but all I am doing is going around in circles. Hoping that I can learn how to approach the question and eventually find the answer. Please forgive me for this long post and thank you for your work, I don't have much but have become a patron because I believe in the work you do and want you to be able to continue your good work. Bless you.

Naomi, thank you for the compliments. I love your strategy of starting over. I have a suggestion for you. Starting with yourself and working backwards, write a little stories about each person. It’s amazing when you write a story how details come to light that you didn’t notice before. You might even consider posting them on a Facebook page specific to your ancestors surname. If you have any family left that would be interested you could share that page with them. I can’t tell you how many little discoveries I’ve made by writing a little mini articles and realized as I’m writing “oh wait a minute I forgot to look at that” whatever “that” is. Those little stories can become a book down the road.

I'm 4 years late to this, but thank you so much for this tour into learning genealogy. I am from Australia and have been researching for just over a year now. I'm hoping to learn how to delve deeper into individual histories and gain more resources to advance my resource. The one thing I want to know most about my family history is how to better access international records, specifically British records. There is a window in between 1882 & 1912 where its been so difficult to find birth and death records for many of my ancestors in that period of time.

Look at www.findagrave.com/, billiongraves.com/, cemeterycensus.com/... also read this page for ideas www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Rutherford_County,_North_Carolina_Genealogy, www.rutherfordcountync.gov/departments/register_of_deeds/death_certificates.php. Also the NC State Archives has a good digital collection online if you've not looked there at digital.ncdcr.gov/. On the County level...Keep in mind that while death records began in 1913 in Rutherford County, NC, many of the smaller counties where not in compliance until much later... into the early 1920's. Also check newspapers for obituaries. If the pension record has a death date, that's evidence of death right there.... although ideally you want to find all you can. Was that a military service pension record? If so, have you obtained all of the military records to be found? Look in City Directories if you know where he was last living for years before and after he died. You may have tried these already... See if any of that is helpful.

That depends on how far up the family tree the common ancestor is. For example, if you and a cousin share the same great great grandparents, then you likely are 3rd cousins. I call it the G Rule (Great + Great + Grandparent = 3 G's or 3rd cousins). It's not an exact rule, but gets you in the ballpark.

Have only gotten back to William Ervine who married Elizabeth Delahunt in Kent County, MD.
Tip #2 is out for me. I have one aunt left and her memory is not good and I'm the oldest of all the cousins.

Even those who have memory problems remember more than most realize. Prompt their memory with pictures or major events. Sometimes that helps. Start with questions like “ tell me about a time…”. It could be something like “Tell me about a time when it was really cold“ or “where were you during World War II?” Then start asking about “who was with you?” Sometimes just having a conversation with someone is comforting to them. But not everything they remember will be accurate but it may provide clues.,
My paternal grandfather was supposedly fathered by a Kiser instead of a James. Shouldn't my DNA show more relatives on the Kiser side instead of using my genealogy to show relations to the James side?
Because my grandfather left his family when my father was young, there is very little info on him. Combine that with no living relatives from that side and I've hit a wall researching him. I'm in Tennessee and they were from Georgia, which isn't too far, but I'm not sure if going to his suspected place of birth will net me anything. Any ideas?

Call the county librarian, the one who knows his/her stuff. Contact the county courthouse for any possible records. Check with the state archives... find maps of the area to see what churches are within walking or horseback ride and see if you can identify some cemeteries and churches in the area that might have records. You have a lot to research before the road trip.
