Curator's introduction to Legion: life in the Roman army

Join exhibition Lead Curator Richard Abdy as he introduces the themes of this fascinating exhibition.
From family life on the fort to the brutality of the battlefield, Legion explores Rome's war machine through the people who knew it best - the soldiers who served in it. In this talk, Abdy shows how the Roman Empire grew to span more than a million square miles and depended upon its military might. But how did this happen and how did it work in reality?
This event is part of the public programme supporting the exhibition Legion: life in the Roman army (1 February - 23 June 2024).

Issue with Aberdeenshire/ NE Scotland (Likely spot of Mons Grapius) is metal doesn't survive well. So maybe could find the site, but highly unlikely. East of Bennachie has a decent case though

thanks for teaching an old freak something new :) i very much enjoy the every day life over 'and he marched against 10000 ov Akaddia's best....' historians nead to know that the STORY is more important than trying to make history into nothing more than a bad action movie.

Corn? No corn in Europe until Columbus brought it back from the western hemisphere circa 1493!

'corn' is used to describe the grain most usually grown in the part of world you are discussing. It can refer to wheat, barley or oats, depending on the area and time, as well as maize.

I had the same reaction to the use of corn until I recently learned that it meant especially the local crop =]

He’s not a “nice chap” because he wanted a concubine? Over 1,800 years ago? Yes, that’s right. Attach today’s sensibilities to ancient man, that always makes sense.

I enjoyed my time. Mostly in retrospect, probably. But, soldiering is human.

I was offended by one very important thing. How dare we judge a person from the past with our present ideas? That was exceptionally bad history! 😡
