Cummins Valve Adjustment // Simple Procedure Explained
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Every 100k miles or so you will want to perform a Cummins valve adjustment procedure. In this short video I'll show you the specifics of performing this lash adjustment, It's not very complicated and easily something you could do within a couple hours.
Thank you as always for all of your support, and I hope to see you for the next video as well!

Thank You . Good info . I feel more comfortable adjusting the valves.
Very cool channel….just retired and have a need to focus on my new lift choice and 2004 Cummings Dodge 2500. Getting pumped to start the maintenance. Nice job!!!
That was an awesome video, Thanks! I really don't wanna pull that valve cover AGAIN but I think it's worth it at 160k with a bunch of go fast part just installed
I really appreciate this video. straight to the point. thank you

Speaking my language with this one, performing some old school valve adjustments. 😁
About 20 years ago my younger brother had Kenworth with 855 big cam 2,that i and a buddy had did a inframe overhaul. We acquired heads with the biggest valves Cummins made. We installed a large 676 Sweitzer turbo. After the break in period i told my brother about reading in a old cummins generator service manual,that the injectors were set at 40lb/ inch, instead of the usual 72lb/ inch. Loosening up the engine af the injectors and reducing valve last by .001 to loosen them up also. My brother said out on the road,fully loaded ,he could " go around and pass" 500 hp Cats! The jacobs engine brake worked so well my brother said it was like slamming on the brakes and used the word" violent" to describe how well the jake brake worked. If you know how it works,one can experiment and make things qork even better!

What did loosening the injectors do!?
@johnnywad7728
27 күн бұрын
@@MikeMentzersProdigy_1 in old school Cummins fuel injectors the normal setting is 72 inch pounds,which ÷12 = 6 lbs . that the injector plunger, once once it bottoms in the injector cups ,the engine has to exert 6 lbs of pressure to get the cam lobe over the " hump". Even though cam lobes on many are essentially circles offset from centerline of camshaft bore. Reducing injector setting to 40 inch lbs ends up being 3 1/3 lbs, almost half. The only thing that would be a problem,if it was a problem,and apparently it wasn't. Would be injection timing would be the slightest bit late . Or I should say the beginning of the injection of the fuel would be slightly later than at 72 in lbs.

@@MikeMentzersProdigy_1 this reduction in force needed to operate fuel injectors,"frees up" the engine to make more HP. Available for moving the vehicle. Granted when a buddy of mine and myself rebuilt my brothers 855 big cam 2 Cummins. We located heads that had huge intake and exhaust valves. And coupled that a big Switzer 676 turbocharger, it was a good combination. It had an actual Jacobs engine brake,that with the settings I used,my brother used to word ...violent, to describe flipping Jake switch on the dash. He said it worked so well,it was like slamming on the brakes.
Very well done
Good video, may I suggest the you can buy the feeler gauges with the bend on them, also to confirm that all gaps are the same you can use a inch lbs torque wrench, and the jam nut for the adjuster should be done with a torque wrench
GREAT VIDEOS THANKS
Thanks for taking the vid while the cab off so we could see what you were doing. That valve clearance is kinda important I got a free Honda gx390 because the exhaust valve was so far out of spec it wouldn’t open 5 min and 2 wrenches later purrs like a kitten.

Sweet! I worked on a friends xr650 and I set the intake valve slightly too tight. Bike started perfectly when cold but after it got hot it was hanging the valve and wouldn't start 🤦
Good example of cummins valve adjustment, but can I give a suggestion when your able to adjust the valves with the cab off You can use a inch lbs torque wrench on the valve, I have been doing it for many years and this way you will know that every valve is the same. Also you should hold the adjuster when torquing the jam nut, it could move changing the valve lash, also for novices you should mark each valve adjustment so when all valves are done each valve will be marked. Even though I have been turning wrenches 🔧 for 30 plus years I still mark the valves and injectors if needed.
Thanks sir
Quick question. Since there's lots of compression in the cylinders, did you do anything to relieve pressure so the crank turns easily with a 1/2' drive ratchet like you just did.? thanks in advance. Been many years since i did one last.
Yep, setting valves is a way of life with solid lifters. Your Cummins uses a distributor-type injector pump instead of a PT fuel system, so no injector torque to set.
Quick question. Your crank turned pretty easily with your ratchet, did you relieve pressure somewhere.
Do you think I could do this on my own with absolutely zero motor experience besides changing the crank case filter? I’m at 141k and I think I am hearing a slight tick noise from the valves. I was planning on paying someone to do the adjustment at 150k like the manufacture recommends but I feel like it should be done sooner. Also, if I don’t do it sooner do you think I’ll be okay? I can only really hear the tick over 65mph or when I’m accelerating. The truck is deleted and I’m planning on towing a toy hauler with it next month (3k miles) so I’m slightly worried lol. Thanks.
I am looking for the valve order on a B4 3.3l? is it in-ex-in-ex-in-ex-in-ex from the front? thanks for any help.
How about let us know what engine it is ! I don’t want to watch a 7 min video to find out it’s a 5.9 not a 6.7 and year would be great in the description!
What do i do if i removed the front pulley / harmonic balancer once before replacing front crank seal. Don't know if i put back the same as it came off, so my timing mark might be off from top dead center

You will have to double check, but as far as I know the crankshaft has a dowel pin in it that the crank pulley must be lined up with to go back on. So it should be on correctly. 👍

@@ReignitedAuto thanks. I will double check if there was a key way
where is your shop located?
I adjusted my valve lash and it is still knocking when I put a load on it. I can put my foot in it when it’s out of gear and it’s fine. As soon as I do it in gear it starts knocking. I turn it off and turn it back on and it is fine. What can be the problem?

Timing or loose valve guides check vacume and compression
I don't know if there is a difference between the 2003 and 2005 5.9 cummins but the valve cover sticker says .010 intake, .020 exhaust. ?
@gordonvanderelst923

I believe 06 and 07 , they changed to .026 on the exhaust. I have a 2007 5.9 .010 intake and .026 exhaust.

How to set TDC right if I don't have the mark? It was erased by time.
@matt98eclipse
9 ай бұрын
The damper will have marks. It will be a line and say TDC. Maybe hard to see but it’s there. It’s engraved into the pulley. Unless someone grinder it. Also you can tell by the 4 bolts that bolt the pulley to crank there’s one little extra hole for the dowl pin. That is another way to tell where the mark will be.
What 12v is that? It doesn’t look like what I’m used to

Also ive never liked or used the valve adjustment method shown in this video. Yes you can adjust all the valves to 2 revolution of crank instead of 6. But nobody can tell you or me what that cam lobe looks like that you are going off of. I rest my case on my other comment,about my brothers big rig going around 500 hp.Cats,fully loaded.
