    You guys dont motivate me to work on cars, wanting to use my busted ass ride motivates me. My car has been down for almost a year :( I think ive gotten all the things worked out (new transmission, timing chain, clutch, ...) and today I plan on putting in fresh new fancy transmission gear oil, and move it off the ramps. If things go well, maybe a burnout too!

    Totally understand the rationale for going for a higher ratio gearbox - but did you know there are multiple ratios available for the LT230 transfer box? As standard, there were 1.667, 1.4, 1.2 and 1.003:1 ratios. As standard, your V8 Disco will have the 1.2:1 version. Those of us doing 5.9 Cummins conversions in the UK all use the 1:1.003 ratio transfer box, (parts for which you can get from Ashcroft Transmissions and a few other places in the UK), and then you get very decent cruising ability and maintain your off road ratios (since the low range part of the transfer box is the same in all versions.). Anyway absolutely love the fact that we're getting Land Rover & Cummins content on this channel so I'm not complaining in the slightest! Cheers from the UK!

    285s are the perfect tire for that truck...I would build a suspension around 285s And oh yea...the R2.8 is 300, yes 300lbs LIGHTER than a 4BT...so you can actually have a suspension that flexes instead of needing springs so firm that it barely moves Going to be a SICK build

  • @tarheel4wd

    @tarheel4wd

    Yeah the r2.8 is way better for that vehicle than a 4bt. And no one really runs big tires on a Land Rover or Range Rover. Hell they ran all the camel trophy races on stock size tires. Plus they are really top heavy.. I dunno why people would say lift it more... but then again people seem to like 12" lifts on diesels running 40" tires on 26" wheels so...😒🤦‍♂️

    285's??? what a 285/35r16? same size as a 265/75r16 which is what i have wish i went with skinnier 285 as you loose some steering lock. Going from 32's to 33's requires guard chop and then you might aswell change offset and run flares and on a 4 door means cutting into the rear door.

    I put a 300 TDI and 380 trans in a 2002 D2. You are right about the parts issue. My donor vehicle was an automatic and the parts to convert to manual on the firewall were basically unobtainium. the 2.8 Cummins wasn't available, but had it been - I'd have done the same thing you are doing. tl;dr, totally agree with your build plan

    Um, what kind of front Prop-shaft are you using? Your PS box is puking, a common issue with that box and upgrade to think about is to use the Box from the P38 (96-02 Range Rovers). It's not a bolt in swap but it is far tougher.

    Unfortunately it doesn’t work very well, if you try and use it while moving it makes some interesting noises and will tear out engine and gearbox mounts. Over here in the UK we use Xeng handbrakes which convert the drum brake to a disc break, they are awesome and well worth it if you can get them over there.

  • @tamberp

    It also has the *hilarious* little side effect of, if you take the propshaft off without having the wheels chocked, you have no handbrake and the vehicle will probably just roll away if there's a bit of an incline. Something to bear in mind if you're ever having to disconnect the propshaft because something's broken.
