Culver City | Visiting with Huell Howser | KCET

Ойын-сауық

Huell travels to the small city with a big history. Did you know that all the little people who portrayed the Munchkins in the Wizard of Oz stayed at the Culver Hotel? Huell visits the Culver City Historical Society Archives and Resource Center, which boast two MGM costume cases. We'll also get a special tour of an historic "tower" that is something to see!

I was born in C.C. in 1955. I love that town. Huell did a good job, he was always so enthusiastic. I met him a couple of times, such a sweet guy. I miss him.

I was born and raised in CC, born in 1954. Yeah, it got run down in the downtown area, but we loved it all anyway. I snuck into lot 3 of MGM, which was where Raintree and other condos are now, and lot two, on Culver west of Overland. It was magical back then...The Andy Griffith show was filmed there, too, and sometimes you can see the Baldwin Hills...same with Hogan's Heroes. it was a great place to grow up. We always felt safe, like we were in Mayberry. It really was like that. I am so glad I grew up when I did and where I did. The best music, the best place, and only 5 miles to the ocean, too. What could be better?

Wow. I used to live close to Culver City and walked through there quite a bit. But I had no idea about the history of the place. I wish they would have gone over to where the old drive-in was. They built a neighborhood on that old lot. Some people can’t handle Huell’s enthusiasm, but I think he was a great host.

Can we get some appreciation for Alberto? My dude shook Huell's hand while holding the stop button.

I grew up literally in the shadow of this tower during the 1960's and 1970's, and never once was allowed to go up there. Several times while playing park league softball, etc at Vet's Park right there, I asked the Parks & Rec leaders if we could go up there, and was given an emphatic "no". It was really never open to the public.

It was far earlier, before it was deemed unsafe. People would go up and watch movies being made. That was pretty much before my time, but a few people my age said they had been up in the tower...Its still there, though, even if we can't go up it. Remember the bells? I can hear them in my head even now, so many years later...

This is great, I love Huell and all his work. But he hardly scratched the surface on all that CC has to tell. I grew up in CC in the Rancho Higuera district, I love it and I'm so proud of all it's history.

Seems that every city in Southern California was founded in the early 1900's. Interesting local history abounds here.

Born and lived really close to Culver City. Boy Scout Troop 57 met there and went to many Camporees there. Swam in the pool many times and marched in several parades. Recall when Ike visited there. Great area. Father had a business on Sepulveda and Culver Blvd.
