Fun fact - the St. Bernards that played Cujo were very playful on set, so it was actually kind of hard to portray the dogs as being vicious enough to be scary. You'll notice that many shots in the movie don't have the dogs' tail in them, because they were constantly wagging. For the rest of the shots, they had to tie the dogs' tail down with string - uncomfortable for the dogs, but rest assured, they were given plenty of treats between takes.

Yeah, I went into it thinking it was just “dog tries murdering folk”, and instead I got The Tragedy Of The Goodest Boy. Steve’s really good at writing dogs, thinking about it. He goes into their viewpoints in Cujo, The Stand, and Under The Dome (that I can think of right now), and he seems to capture their viewpoints in a really genuine sort of way.

Fun fact (apologies if it was stated elsewhere) - Stephen King has admitted that he was so strung out on drugs while writing Cujo *that he doesn't remember writing it.* What's remarkable about that is, the book is pretty well written, you'd never know it was written by someone whose mind was thoroughly baked.

I saw this movie when I was a little younger, and I cried when cujo died. Like it wasn't his fault. It was absolutely terrifying when we thought my dog Bear may have had rabies. He had foam and the mouth and was just acting super weird. It stopped after a few days, but the thought of my dog going insane and the fact that he would of had to be put down absolutely shattered my heart. We think what happened was he maybe chewed on wood and got a cut or something or a splinter in his mouth that made him not be able to swallow good. I'm just so thankful he's okay and that it wasn't rabies. I love u Bear

"Shortly following those mortal events in the Camber dooryard, Cujo's remains were cremated. The ashes went out with the trash and were disposed of at the Augusta waste treatment plant. It would perhaps not be amiss to point out out that he had always tried to be a good dog. He had tried to do the things his MAN and his WOMAN, and most of all his BOY, had asked or expected of him. He would have died for them, if that had been required. He had never wanted to kill anybody. He had been struck by something, possibly destiny, or fate, or only a degenerative nerve disease called rabies. Free will was not a factor." that final paragraph always gets to me :(

I honestly like the decision to make Cujo a St. Bernard instead of stereotypical “aggressive/scary” dog like a Rottweiler or German shepherd because it makes the scenes of Cujo killing even more terrifying in my opinion. As a vet tech, I know how horrible rabies is. Poor boy must've been in so much pain. Your throat muscles get paralyzed so you can't swallow (which causes the foaming), you can't drink at all, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) causes the furious rabies stage, sounds and bright lights cause extreme pain, and death usually happens from losing the ability to breathe.

@hypnodance Actually, it’s common knowledge that vaccines are necessary to prevent a lot of diseases. A responsible pet owner would have taken the dog to a vet as soon as they got him and made absolutely sure that he was vaccinated. If you’re going to let your unvaccinated pet chase wild animals, you are an irresponsible pet owner, and you’re basically asking for your pet to catch something.

one thing I'll always love about Stephen King's works is that he does research on diseases or conditions he's writing about. It may not be a big deal to some people but the small details with Cujo getting a sensitivity to noise, producing more drool, his eyes watering, it's the little things that truly make King an amazing storyteller. Cujo has always been more of a heartbreaking story than a horror to me, seeing this loveable good dog turn into a monster over one simple mistake is really sad to me

I work as a vet tech, so I’m pretty well acquainted with rabies. And I gotta say, Cujo is a pretty decent representation of it in terms of realism. An animal experiencing furious rabies is incredibly dangerous. They’re in excruciating pain, with full body muscle spasms (including the throat, which is why you see them foaming from the mouth. They literally cannot swallow their own saliva). Their brain is being destroyed, and that delirium combined with physical pain is a recipe for an animal that’s going to be aggressive and lashing out. And you’d be surprised just how fast and strong a rabid animal can be. They’re fully in fight-or-flight mode, and cannot control their muscles, leading to exertion and acts of force that otherwise wouldn’t be preformed because of damage to their own bodies. And Saint Bernards are *strong*. I have no doubt that one could rip off a door handle or smash a window if they wanted. There are a few inaccuracies- animals with furious rabies don’t tend to have to cognition to maintain focus on a target considering the massive amounts of damage being done to the brain (he probably wouldn’t even realize Donna and Tad were still there once he goes after the phone). Plus, for a large breed like that, organ failure from exertion would happen pretty quickly. As a final note- I wouldn’t be surprised if Donna and possibly Tad died after the encounter. She could get the rabies vaccine, but considering she was bitten on the arm and hands, it could already be too late for it to be effective. And giving CPR to Tad while covered in blood and drool from a rabid animal? 100% a way to give the kid rabies. Loved the movie, and I love horror that’s honestly pretty realistic. Get your pets vaccinated, folks. Rabies is a death sentence for anything who gets it.

This was the first novel I ever read. I never thought Tad was annoying in the movie or book, he was a little tiny boy, scared out of his mind. I even felt bad for poor Cujo, I couldn't help but blame the parents for not giving him his shots. It's sad because Cujo knows what's happening but is powerless to stop himself. He's in agony.

Using a St. Bernard as the titular canine was a master move by King in the novel if you ask me. St. Bernards are such docile and gentle breeds that the idea of one becoming vicious and bloodthirsty comes off as unexpected but absolutely brilliant. Of course, even that falls just short of using rabies as the catalyst, since rabies in of itself is a pretty nightmarish disease for both humans and animals alike. Also, I just like St. Bernards a lot.

I can't help but feel bad for Cujo since all he was doing was chasing a rabbit and being a dog. Also, all of this mayhem could have been avoided if Joe Camber's wife, Charity, would have listened to their son, Brett, and gotten help for Cujo like he asked. However, she was in too much of a hurry to go visit her sister, so that never happened. Of course, we would have never gotten a story if Cujo had been seen by a vet, but it is what it is.
