Cuban Santeria: The Way of the Saints

Despite its many practitioners, Santeria is difficult to see first-hand - Santeria priestesses are often wary of foreigners. It was very unusual that they allowed a camera into this secret ceremony.
Most Cubans are Catholic. Many also believe in Santeria, a syncretic religion that was brought to Cuba with the slave trade. Santeria customs include sacred drumming, animal sacrifice, and trance-like state that is used for communicating with their ancestors and deities.
Santeria isn’t just a religion - it’s a reflection of the Cuban personality.
Born of resistance and survival - and now a celebration.

I know this video was done for educational purposes, in the spirit of that I would like to share some information as this video contains several misnomers. Santeria is a classically a pejorative term denoting how Santeros and Santeras once hid their faith behind saints. The term Santeria is more synonymous with Lukumi and Olorisha (Yoruba based) faith in Cuba. The practice we are seeing in this video comes from Regla De Kongo: or more specifically one of the several branches of Palo. There is Mayombe, Brillumba, Monté, and Kimbisa. As a spiritual tradition in Cuba it actually predates Santeria. To all my Abures of Lukumi and Ifa; Alafia, Benedicionés Y Kinkemaché Igboro. And to all my KiMpangui of Mayombe; Nsala Malekum y Nzambia Lo Acutaré.

Here in Brazil we also have African based religions. Candomblé and Umbanda are the most popular, but there're also Terecô, Batuque, Xangô do Nordeste. I'm an Umbandist myself. Originally, we syncretized our Orixás with the catholic saint's, but nowadays the preference is increasingly to worship the Orixás without syncretism.

Actually no it wasn’t brought to Cuba it was made and birthed in Cuba Santeria don’t exist in Yoruba land before slavery only Yoruba religion did Santeria is a syncretist religion it’s a fusion of Yoruba catholic and also has taino influence as well as you can see with the cigars and the goddes yemaya which she has lots of similarities to the taino goddess of fertility, over time many of the Yoruba slaves adopted many of the traditions from Catholics and mixed it with there’s so therefore it’s not entirely African just because it’s heavily influenced by Yoruba doesn’t mean it was invented in Africa it was in fact birthed and developed in Cuba moving on.

it is just another form of demonic sacrifice for demonic worship. if you want curse from demons, and destroy the coming generations, this is one of the ways. But there are consequences in the end, and to be with these demons in hell for eternity. it is simply creating a covenant with demons, it speaks of desiring to be with them for eternity.

Is is about worshipping and getting possessed by demons disguised as "saints". True saints will never ask you to perform rituals to them or to offer them sacrifices. The saints of God are saints because their only goal in life was to worship God and they offered their life to God. True saints will tell you to give your life to God, they pray for us to God to have mercy on our souls and to answer our prayers if they are in line with His will. When it is your will which is served, then it is not of God. It is deception and this path will only bring brokenness, sorrow and ultimately death if followed deep enough. In the end it is just another form of paganism designed to worship creation instead of The Creator. When you reach the most desperate moment in life, or when you fall in your deepest pit, remember that God can forgive you and he can save you if you cry out his name and turn to him. And also remember that no matter how good life is now, there will be a moment a hopelessness and despair in everyone's life as death comes, and in that moment God is the only one you can turn to for help. God blesss!
