Inolvidable, mucha elegancia, no solo en la arquitectura sino en la sociedad habanera. Recuerdo el perfume que se percibia en Sn. Rafael y Galiano, por las tardes cuando las muchachas solian salir de compras. Creo que nunca se podra recuperar, la poblacion ha perdido clase.

Muy cierto , había cultura en todo sentido . Ni mujeres o hombres salían mal arreglado a la calle . Desde el más pobre hasta los más pudientes , mantenían una ética y elegancia. Tan diferente a la actualidad . 😢😢😥😔

Cierto Miriam, el dano causado por ellos es incalculable pero mas que nada a la fibra y cultura de la sociedad cubana, aunque han destruido mucho no han podido aniquilar 500 anos de historia. Queda todavia mucho que se esta salvando gracias a la comunidad internacional, no a los comunistas. Estuve en Praga de pequeno y el cambio de esa ciudad despues del comunismo es impresionante, la ciudad vive de nuevo!, pienso que lo mismo pasara en nuestra Cuba y espero que sea pronto. Saludos.

Thank you for your comments Celicia, indeed we descend from a very exceptional and beautiful land. People from other nationalities, especially Latin America, are used to measure the wealth of their countries by the size and natural resources of these and do not understand how we became the third largest economy in the Americas. It all has to do with the strategic situation of our country in the world but most importantly, it’s people, we had to learn from the beginning the art of business, service and trade, this together with Spain’s great interest in Cuba, laws that allowed colonial Cuba to trade with the rest of the world since the 1700’s and of course some of our natural resources made a great difference. We also had excellent charities funded by our great aristocracy and dating back centuries when social services did not exist insuring that the less fortunate, specially children, were taken care of, this is not to say that we were perfect, there were many loopholes, but it did set us apart from many nations of Latin America and even the US at times.

Something is on the works to bring Cuba back to capitalism however democracy has not been discussed, many places and parts of Havana are being restored mostly by private enterprise which has been allowed for some time now and expanded by newly approve laws and the right to own real estate but I agree that it would be wonderful if the Castros pick up and leave altogether and forever. Nothing they do now will repair the damage caused by them to Cuba and the Cuban People.

Thanks for this beautiful anecdote Danny. Tebaldi was one of my parent's favorite, my dad and he's friends which were avid opera lovers used to tell me many stories about the opera seasons in Havana. Classical music is embedded in the fabric of Cuban culture, at that time most of the operas were presented at the Vedado Auditorium and hoards of young opera lovers would gather across the street at the Carmelo restaurant to cheer the opera singers as they passed. Tebaldi must have loved it!.

Estos videos los hago yo con fotos y discos de mi coleccion, no soy profesional asi que no quedan perfectos pero me alegro que te guste, esa es la Cuba que han tratado de desacreditar en los ultimos 50 anos....Pero la verdad, teniamos una sociedad extrema y tanta cultura e historia.

P.S. My parents saw their favorite Renata TEBALDI in 1957 in Adriana Lecouvre in Habana. Around 12 years ago, La Tebaldi had a book signing in NEW YORK at Lincoln CENTER with lines that snaked around the plaza. I bought the book for my mother who loved her, I told her I was Cuban and she lit up a smile and said in perfect Spanish: "Cuba!! La Bella Habana que memorias!!! Que horror lo que esa bestia a destruido, un insulto a gran pais!". She was moved when I gave her my mother's message.

Thank you Armando for a trip down memory lane. That Cuba will never return as it was, and that's a shame that this generation will never experience that beauty.

I know Lourdes, but this is way before my generation and we still remember, there are a great number of children and grand children of “that” Cuba which has grown up abroad but hold dear our culture and heritage, I was raised in Europe for most of my life and will never be able to shake off my other adopted lands but foremost I am Cuban. Although everything changes with time and it will never be exactly the same we will bring back some of that traditional Cuban Glamour and Elegance to our motherland, we are also in touch with many groups within the Island country and in different provinces who share our values and grand inheritance almost destroyed by communism, they feel sick and cheated by what has been lost in that monstrous attempt to create a “New Man” even more than we are and are already in the process within their means to ensure that our true culture and the “real Cubans” prevail and are a part of a future Cuba. Thank you for what you are doing, I always have the dream to visit after the Castros are gone, with my children and possible grandchildren, but at 76 now I don't think that is going to be possible. But I admire you, and I wish that you accomplished your goals, so my children one day will be able to visit and enjoy it. Lourdes

Hold on to your dream Lourdes, a lot of things may happen in just a few years. My aunt which lives here with me is 87 and still making plans, perhaps a little less ambitious than before, she was a lawyer in Cuba & Spain, never married before but at 58 years old she married a very important politician & aristocrat in Europe, I was always her favourite nephew and we travelled the world together but my goodness she's still something else! Our best family friend is 75, she is still running her foundation for disadvantage children (American Children's Orchestras) And hopes to also open her foundation in Cuba when the situation changes substantially or those goons are gone from power. MI AMIGO EL DR. LUIS LEBREDO ME PIDE QUE LE PUBLIQUE ESTO EN "CUBA ELEGANTE": Conocí a Andresito Rivero Aguero de niño, y a sus padres. Era el tiempo de los auténticos en el poder. Su padre había sido ministro de Batista, pero como era un hombre honrado vivía una vida humilde no falta de penurias. Yo era uno de los dueños de una escuela privada que entonces estaba en Oquendo y Maloja. Un día, la esposa del ex-ministro vino a matricular a su pqueña hija, que en nuestras aulas cursó sus primeros grados. Por esa razón, tuve la suerte de conocer a una distinguidísima dama, que traía y volvía a buscar, todos los días, a su pequeña hija. Y de la misma manera conocía al Dr. Rivero Aguero: un caballero, un hombre honrado, inteligente, capacitado y lleno de buenas ideas con respecto a aquella Cuba que tanto amaba. Fue un gran privilegio para mí conocer de cerca a una familia tan distinguida y meritoria. Siempre los recuerdo con admiración

Bueno, creo que puedo decir que nosotros (mis padres y yo) eramos humildes y logramos alcanzar a la clase media, cuando mi padre comienza a trabajar en la Industria del Tabaco, siendo chofer de la reparticion de cigarrilos, Competidora Gaditana, siendo yo un niño y ex-alumno de La Salle. Pudimos conocer a toda Cuba y conocimos Miami desde el 1948. Pero no todo el mundo podia hacer eso, Habia un gran imbalance social, pero se podia alcanzar una meta, si te lo proponias y posiblemente teniendo "un padrino. Cuba era unica,la recuerdo asi. No sufri el Castrato, ya que llegamos a New York en el 1957, para jamas regresar, Cuba fue un sueño que se esfumó en el tiempo.

Hay que comprender que el mundo es desigual y no todos en Cuba eran personas afluyentes economicamnte pero era mas o menos la misma situacion de la epoca en los paises mas desarrollados, en E..U. existia insclusive mas desigualdad para ciertas clases pero si habia en Cuba una gran clase aristocrata, rica y poderosa y una clase media muy extensa con una cultura y una cratividad envidiable desde las epocas coloniales, el uno por ciento de que tanto se habla se multiplicaba en nuestro pais hacian, obras maravillosas, el mundo entero nos miraba con cierto asombro y verdaderamente no hacia falta ni comunismo ni socialismo para resolver nuetros problemas sociales.

Muy de acuerdo en todo lo expuesto por usted. La clase media en Cuba era pujante, sin lugar a dudas la mejor de toda Hispano America. Claro que tiene que haber de todo, en cualquier pais existe. Recuerdo que en los envases de perfume que compraba mi madre, se leia claramente..."New York, Paris, Havana" eso solo se veia en Cuba. Como siempre fui independiente, para comprar mis libros de estudiante, trabajé en J, Vallés, la casa que mejor cortaba los trajes a la medida,compitiendo con Oscar's. Alli tuve la suerte de ver y hablar con Tyrone Power, Errol Flyn, y Cesar Romero, los artistas de Holywood se enarmoraban de la Habana y alli se quedaba meses. Cuba tenia problemas politicos, no sociales, ya que eramos los mas adelantados, mucho mas que en EE.UU.,lo sabemos, aunque mucho lo pongan en duda. Como decia Jose Ignacio Rivero, en su articulo dueño del Diario de la Marina, "Hacia falta una Revolución?" ....no lo creo, jamas lo creeré.

Gracias Luis, muchos carinos para mi querido Panama, espero que esa democracia llegue pronto a nuestra bella Cuba y podamos compartir alli tambien libremene.

Tiene mucha razon Sr. Horacio Minquillon, hay que hacer la lucha fuerte por restaurar por lo menos parte de nuestra otrora sociedad y que los cubanos volvamos a disfrutar de la admiracion del mundo. En Cuba somos ahora una minoria los que mantenemos nuestros antiguos valores, buen gusto y tradiciones de nuestra finas familias cubanas pero no dejaremos de batallar hasta eliminar esa imagen negativa del "nuevo hombre" que desgraciadamente es tal como usted senala. Your family had one on the most beautiful residences in Havana, how can I not include such an architectural marvel, I know it's history and a bit about the Pollack family, the Casusos, Rothchilds, ect. But you must know those things better than me. I wish with all my heart that the house was still your family home and hope one day soon it is again in the hands of it's rightful owners. I will try to make some more videos that matter to Cuban culture in the future. My time is a little limited since I am the head of a corporation which belongs to the family, things are very complicated for businesses in the US now and problems are an everyday thing. I am also helping my relatives in Cuba get back some of what we lost and start their own business there now that it appears to be possible. Very time consuming and expensive all of this!. Asi es, la envidia es peor que un cancer, lo mismo paso con la revolucion francesa y la rusa, un grupo de oportunistas desalmados por sus egoistas aspiraciones de poder y grandeza con solo instigar una clase contra la otra sacaron a relucir lo peor del ser humano para que los apoyasen falsamente alegando repartir igualdades y derechos que solamente el individuo por sus propios meritos puede obtener. Cuanto no perdieron esos paises y nuestra querida Cuba, cuantas vidas!. El dano sera dificil de reparar y olvidar, lo mas triste es que todavia hay muchas gentes y paises que no han aprendido la leccion o se aprovechan de ella para destruir y esclavizar.

No soy cubana pero luchen para rescatar su cuba libre.

***** Thanks for your comments Roberto, a great effort is being done to save many of these grand buildings but much more is so necessary to bring back Havana and other cities close to what it was before 1959, our old society lives in us and we will take it back whenever it is possible. Tenemos los panamenos y los cubanos muchas cosas en comun y sobredoto existe una gran fraternidad entre nosotros, siempre disfruto cuando estoy en tu bello pais, mis amigos alli son fabulosos. Hola de nuevo Lucrecia8700. (a todos los que deseen compartin el video) Hay veces que el sistema de youtube no permite compartir en facebook etc. Cuando esto pasa hagan un "click" en la parte izquierda del "mouse" cuando abran las opciones hagan un click derecho en "copy video url" y un "paste" o aplicacion en el lugar deseado, ya sea un posting en facebook u otra pagina social, o sea copy video url y paste, es simple y funciona con todos los videos que no puedan compartir en directo.

Un Saludo Manry65 y muchas gracias por compartir el video, es cierto lo que senalas sobre las mentiras del socialismo y el comunismo adoptado sin mas motivo que el poder que este brinda para escalvizar a los pueblos, ellos no han construido nada notable y todo lo maravilloso y grandioso que exisiste en Cuba fue hecho antes de la revolucion, esto es lo que los turistas visitan pues nada hay de interes en los ultimos 50 anos, solo destruccion y propagacion de vulgaridad con pocas excepciones.

No. Esa era se ha ido con el viento.

La Habana se volvió loco en el Día de Año Nuevo de 1959. ojos salvajes hombres y mujeres jóvenes estallaron de sus hogares en las calles. Los estudiantes salieron de los campus. En lugar de recuperar silenciosamente de las fiestas de Fin de Año, habaneras acudieron al aire libre en tropel. Aplaudieron, silbaron, bailaron en las calles cuando se enteraron de que Batista, su familia y sus cohortes habían huido del país por avión a aproximadamente 02 a.m. La gente se dispararon hacia el centro de La Habana. Llevaban banderas cubanas y cantaron el himno nacional. caravanas de coches engalanados con banderas, los cuernos de soplado, subieron a través de los manifestantes. En el centro de La Habana, las multitudes llegaron a un pico de excitación, entonces corrieron por los hoteles de lujo que albergaban los mayores casinos de juego. Los casinos eran los principales objetivos de Castro. Ellos se llevaron a cabo por los jugadores profesionales y gángsters de los Estados Unidos que habían pagado las sumas enormes régimen de Batista por el privilegio.

Y esa descarga a que viene? O eres otro chivaton comecandela ? Eso paso hace mil anos, habla de la desgracia que fue todo eso. Si esa gente que saltaron de alegria cuando Batista huyo se llegan a imaginar lo que venia seguro que hubieran llorado

Cierto Sr, Gutierrez, vamos a decir que no todo se ha perdiso solo que esta en manos de unos ineptos que por su propia conveniencia lo han tratado de destruir y desacreditar ya que ellos no son capaces de construir nada y han sido un rotundo fracaso. Ya les es dificil y aunque se roban mucho dinero de las instituciones internacionales estas estan restaurando y protegiendo este patrimonio que le pertene a Cuba y sus duenos privados no a ningun gobierno.

I have that marvelous book in my collection Mark. I agree with you, ours is the story of so many Cuban families, they may have stripped us of our wealth but never our lineage and our will to keep alive what they so desperately wanted to destroy. My friend be prepared for heavily mixed emotions when you visit today's Cuba!. There is still much grandeur to be seen but also so much is in shambles! and then there is the new man!
