    My family rode that train from Havana to the Hersey plant and back. That was in pre-Castro days. I was young but old enough to remember the whole shebang. There was a boat ride from Key West to Havana. Cuba was dreadfully poor. 😮😮😮😊😊😊

    My family was there for a site seeing visit in June 1956. Before presidential election in 1952, Batista staged a coup.[32] Back in power and receiving financial, military and logistical support from the United States government, Batista suspended the 1940 Constitution and revoked most political liberties, including the right to strike. He outlawed the Cuban Communist Party in 1952.[33] He then aligned with the wealthiest landowners who owned the largest sugar plantations, and presided over a stagnating economy that widened the gap between rich and poor Cubans. Eventually it reached the point where most of the sugar industry was in U.S. hands, and foreigners owned 70% of the arable land. As such, Batista's repressive government then began to systematically profit from the exploitation of Cuba's commercial interests, by negotiating lucrative relationships with both the American Mafia, who controlled the drug, gambling, and prostitution businesses in Havana, and with large U.S.-based multinational companies who were awarded lucrative contracts. To quell the growing discontent amongst the populace-which was subsequently displayed through frequent student riots and demonstrations-Batista established tighter censorship of the media, while also using his Bureau for the Repression of Communist Activities secret police to carry out wide-scale violence, torture and public executions. These murders mounted in 1957, as socialism became more influential. Many people were killed, with estimates ranging from hundreds to about 20,000 people killed. Cuba had Latin America's highest per capita consumption rates of meat, vegetables, cereals, automobiles, telephones and radios, though about one third of the population was considered poor and enjoyed relatively little of this consumption.[34]

    The trains are hopelessly old but they are still in running condition. You do not see a single piece of paper or wad of gum on the floor. No graffiti anywhere. People behave civilized. Now, go to NYC and smell the stench of feces and urine. See the rats gorging themselves on the garbage and food left behind by patriotic New Yorkers. Admire the wonderful graffiti on the brand new trains. Scrape the gum on the soles of your shoes from the abundance on the stations. And say Hello! to the bum that is sleeping, playing with himself, or taking a leisurely dump on the brand new seats.

    What gauge is this? Is it right to assume this was built to transport sugar for the Hershey company? Once common in the US, there is only one electric inter-urban still running there, the Chicago, South Shore and South Bend Railroad, aka the South Shore line.

  • @trianghornby

    @trianghornby

    It’s standard gauge 4ft 8.5 inches or 1435mm Hershey was indeed built for that purpose around 1918 but it was sold to the Cuban Atlantic Sugar Company in 1946 and was then taken over after the revolution in 1959

    @@trianghornby Thanks. For some reason it looked broader than standard US gauge. Now I'm wondering why the sugar mill was closed. Cuba needs exports desperately, but may need the power more... or maybe it couldn't maintain the mill.

  • @Condorcounter

    Like many industries worldwide, Cuban has been consolidating their sugar mills. It means harvest sugar cane must be quickly transported longer distances to remaining mills, as the cane’s sugar content degrades quickly in a day or so. Plus sugar from corn has replaced cane sugar in many applications worldwide.

    I take it Hershey Cub was Sugar Plantation and mill, and raw sugar was shipped to Hershey Pennsylvania for manufacture into chocolates etc. After the 1959 Revolution, did Hershey become just another Castro Nationalised Plantation? And cut all exports to USA.
