Cuba: A Penniless Fisherman's Secret To Happiness
Discovering the meaning of life on Havana's waterfront.
Jose is retired, and his pension is only 4 dollars a month. As a hook and line fisherman, Jose’s at the bottom of the fishing hierarchy. He uses almost no equipment, and only owns two pairs of shorts. He catches very little, and most of it becomes bait.
Jose only eats two meals a day. When a wealthier fisherman shows up, you’d think he’d be envious, but he offers his meager catch as bait.
I asked Jose what he’d do if he won a million dollars. “I’d buy a boat for two, and more fishing line.” Nothing more? A car? A house? “I have a house.”
Although the rest of us might see only what’s missing, Jose seems completely satisfied with what he has.

Wonderful perspective of a slice of life. I wonder if Jose is fishing today. Glad he has a place to live.

How in hell can the Cuban Government even have a $4.00/month pension? It's a disgrace!
