Steve Westaby performed emergency heart surgery on me in 2015 and I cannot be more thankful for him, life saver

He said to me "only 2 people can save you..me and god. And god doesnt do heart surgery" I owe him my life. Thankyou .

People said im crazy that i decided to be a cardiac surgeon at the age of 12, trying to get in the operating theatre since i was a preclinical medical student... i hope the end of my story also end up like him, i really respect prof.stephen westaby 🙏🏻

What an inspiration, fantastic book and what a surgeon. Deserves a knighthood definitely!

His book Fragile Lives is a riveting and most informative read as are the case histories he relates. Not that many seven year olds are so focused on what they want to do for the rest of their lives, and then go and do it so successfully. His fearless and innovative approach to saving lives regardless of how ill the patients were, is incredible. Why he has not been knighted for his life's work before now is difficult to understand. I hope he enjoys a happy and satisfying retirement.

My story is in Fragile Lives, he operated on me in 1998 (not in 1996 as he mentions in this interview ;) ). Amazing man :)

This man had a massive influence not only on the people that he operated, but on the millions to come to life in the future. Stem cells, artificial hearts. This man had a massive influence on those.

Bit of a hero of mine is Mr Westaby.Top Bloke. The catheter and boots story is a classic. Humility and experience are the keys to wisdom.

Fascinating book. A truly inspiring gentleman. Where is his knighthood indeed ???

Thanks for inspiring even veterinarians like me to become a very particular kind of veterinary surgeon… future will tell

What a wonderfully talented,pioneering, brave, selfless and humble man.I have had a CABG x4 following M.I.(heart attack) and suffer a degree of heartfailure -controlled,so far, by drugs) I have just read his book "Fragile Lives" unputdownable -reads like a thriller.Readily available incl Amazon.A huge thanks is due to all these brilliant surgeouns.

go for neuro surgery future of cardiac surgery is still doubtful 😬😬

@@dipjyotibasu5586 How? If cardiac, I would go for pediatric cardiac surgery. I don't see any way where this field's future would be threatened.

Intervention cardiology also deals with structural heart disease , minor asd vsd pda are usually closed with patch by catheter based procedure , it wouldn't be safe to say that all paediatric heart surgery will be done in the old fashion way , minimally invasive surgery is the way to go .
