CSU EOP BIOGRAPHICAL QUESTIONS | College Support Network

I’ve been getting quite a few messages regarding the CSU Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). More specifically, many of you have been asking how you should answer the EOP Biographical Questions. As a result, I wanted to go ahead and make a video specifically about these questions to help others who may have similar concerns! For today’s video I will be providing you with an overview of the CSU Educational Opportunity Program, then I’ll give you 4 key tips to answer the biographical questions, and lastly, I will be walking you through how to actually answer each question! The CSU EOP is an amazing program and I recommend you all to apply if you have time! As always, please like, comment, subscribe, and share this video with anyone who may find it useful.

@@gelo733 Hi Gelo! Yes definitely. The EOP application is separate from the general CSU application. Just make sure your recommenders get the letters in before the EOP deadline which can be found here: www2.calstate.edu/attend/student-services/eop/Pages/eop-campus-status.aspx

@@collegesupportnetwork7207 Hello! This video was extremely helpful,. I was so confused about EOP. Is it better to finish the EOP application earlier, or is submitting earlier not a factor in admission to the program?

@@flower5721 Hello! Great question also. Technically you can submit your EOP application later (after submitting the general application). The deadline for EOP is different for each campus, you can find the deadlines here: www2.calstate.edu/attend/student-services/eop/Pages/eop-campus-status.aspx If you can get them all done at the same time then that's great but if not that's fine too!

This was so helpful I’m just wondering what the tone of these answers should be. In particular the second question should we frame it like a story like the common app essay or should we be straight here forward and practical? Also do we have to go into specifics about setbacks like medical sicknesses that have caused setbacks?

  • @collegesupportnetwork7207

Hi Zahara! I'm glad this video was helpful. I think for all biographical questions you should try to be as straight-forward as possible. Unlike common app essays (or any college essay), EOP offices simply want to learn more about you and your situation so they can determine if you would be a good fit for their program. You don't need to tell an elaborate story with many sensory details - straight forward and practical is the best way to go about it. As for your second question, I would provide any and all details you can that will give EOP offices a better understanding of your situation. This definitely includes setbacks, challenges, obstacles, etc. such as medical sicknesses and so on. I hope this helps!

Hey Steve, thanks for the informative video! How can I know if I qualify with "a history of low income"? I'm not a first-generation student and I don't necessarily come from a disadvantaged background so I don't know if it's worth applying.

Hi Ethan! That is a fantastic question. Like I mentioned in the video, I really suggest most students to apply anyway because there have been cases where students did not meet the eligibility but were still accepted into the program. In terms of income eligibility, each CSU campus has its own guidelines. I''ll list a few down below so you can gauge what the average income ceiling is for different campuses. Cal Poly Pomona: www.cpp.edu/ssep/eop/eop-income-guidelines.shtml Cal State Fullerton: www.fullerton.edu/eop/admissions/requirements.php Cal State LA: www.calstatela.edu/eop/eop-income-guidelines Humboldt State: eop.humboldt.edu/income-guidelines You can also specifically look up the schools you're applying for. Try a google search of "School Name: CSU EOP Income guidelines" and you should be able to find it!

Thank you so much this was super helpful! I also have another question, are the deadlines for eop different from applications ? Cause I’m applying for fall ‘21 and some say December 4th and some January 15th so how does that work ? I submitted my request for one but I’m not sure when the deadline is then

Hi Kiara, that is a great question! The EOP deadline is different from the actual CSU application. The CSU application is due Dec. 4th while the EOP deadline varies by specific CSU campuses. You can find the deadlines for specific campuses here: www2.calstate.edu/attend/student-services/eop/Pages/eop-campus-status.aspx

Hi Nhu! That's a fantastic question. It doesn't need to be structured like a UC PIQ or even a general essay for that matter. These short answers should really be straightforward and focused on answering the questions.

Hi Melody! There isn't really a recommended length. I would say just try to make it as concise and clear as possible while providing all the important information. These responses shouldn't be looked at like an essay.

For EOP, do you HAVE to have low income? I'm a first generation student but i don't think my household doesn't have that much of low income though we don't have much money either

  • @collegesupportnetwork7207

Hello! Technically students need to be low-income to be eligible but there have been students in the past who have been accepted because they belonged to historically disadvantaged student populations (like being first-generation for example). I would recommend applying anyway since the application isn't too long. You can find more information here about eligibility for the program (and the income criteria). www2.calstate.edu/attend/student-services/eop/Pages/eligibility.aspx
