    Thanks for documenting this, I'm trying to grow black crystals, do you mind sharing what brand food coloring you used? Every type I've tried has resulted in dark green crystals, thanks!

    I grew salt crystals in a mason jar full of water and incubated them on a lava lamp base. I saturated the water then let it evaporate. I got a crystal cluster that looked kind of like bismuth but milky white, and very fragile.

    very nice, I wouldn't add as much colouring however since it seems to no longer be transparent in the video. perhaps the process could be simplified with a simple automatic system, that would be without the freezer, but automating it could accelerate it since you will get shorter moments where it barely grows(how much does the growth decrease once it is cold and no longer cools down?). I was thinking about a simple system with a heater coil and a sieve like thing to hold it, or a grabber arm both options allow to take out the crystal without taking out the small ones(requires to first get a big enough seed crystal manually or from a previous batch). then it is heated using the coil, now either the system can be made complex and automatically determine how saturated the liquid is, or you could pre program it to every time it reheats add speciffic amounts based of for example the weight of the seed crystal or the amount of loops run, that would slightly slow down the growth since to stay safe it might in the beginning also dissolve small parts of the crystal before recrystalizing again but it makes the system a lot simpeler and cheaper to make otherwise you would have to add something like a second container with a valve and a filter below it, or a huge or modified filter and do it like a coffe mashine or similar but with a basain on the filter which is a lot more effort to do right and has more expensive parts and complicated maintainance. while automating it might not seem to usefull at first sight, it can really be. if I see how huge your crystal is then auto producing them might be interesting to generate many things like chairs or window frames out of crystal, or to make many crystals then link them to get a wall out of crystal to make a room like a geode. also o you just put the seed on the bottom of the jar every time? or do you use some special mechanism to suspend it like sonic levitation or such? well or a rope or such? talking about sound, water reacts heavily to sound in the structures it takes on, ice crystals for example often show many things like temperature cooling speed and also the types of sound that where there, perhaps it might be interesting to see what happens when crystals are grown the same way from similar seeds(perhaps filing the seeds to get a almost exactly same shape). and then comparing the growth in different circumstances one without sound, one or a few with speciffic frequencies, and perhaps one with frequency patterns like music from a specific genre.

    Sorry for the late answer. To your first question: the growth reduces to the the speed of water evaporation. If the temp is constant then the only drive is the speed of water molecules leaving and can not hold more material so it must crystalize out. Second: The crystal in this case are not suspended, it grows on the bottom. And about making stuff out of it... These crystals are very fragile and they deteriorate very fast. I have some one year old ones, they don't look fit at all. Humidity is the enemy. You can coat them to delay the decay. Even my fully epoxy coated ones deformed over time...

  • @ted_van_loon

    @@NagyBig I see. that is a shame that they degrade so fast and are super fragile. perhaps other structures work well. at home I currently have aluin, sugar and normal salt crystal experiments in a jar. the aluin is really fast in growth and seems to be decently strong. and frome some old ones I have laying at home(without a coating on them) they seem to mostly only get less clear over time when the water gets out of them. perhaps that might be a solution to make something react with the outside of the crystals. perhaps the epoxy might also let through some water or such or the solvent might damage it. at home in one of the experiments I have done recently I wanted to make 2 aluin(alum) crystals grow on a small 3mm and a small 5mm arduino led. I just sanded it and put the wires on it and put it in. also using the hot cold method you used. but then instead of using a fridge I used my bedroom(which currently at the hottest moment of the day is 13,3 degrees celcius and tends to fluctuate between around that temperature and around 8 degrees celcius, so my bedroom acts quite much like a fridge for the crystals(it is winter here)). I expected it to grow slow so I put 2 of them in the jar with around 3cm spacing. especially since I didn't use a seed crystal. put them in in the evening, and went to sleep. the next day when I checked it both had already grown so fast that they both reached the top of the jar and almost the bottom as well and they where grown into eachother so instead of having 2 crystal lights I have one with 2 colours now. they are still quite clear and have crystals in the cluster up to almost 3cm. so for growing huge crystals aluin might be really great. and if just like here aluin is cheaper than citric acid than it would be cheaper as well.(here citric acid is €15 per kg, and aluin is either €10 per kg or around half that price when buying it in large amounts.) was suprised how fast it went and how nice since I could still add more aluin to the solution if I wanted to while preparing it. aluin crystals from what I heard tend to also regularly have water in them when grown fast which is why they lose their clearnes eventually if they are not coated and so that would also mean a decent part of the crystal weight might be water. and in general most youtube channels these day don't even read or reply to comments, so a late answer is no problem at all.

    @@MadScientist267 might be nice, however aren't those crystals very fragile and sensitive to humidity? but it is a good option to try especially if you are in a country like USA where you can legally get it in decent amounts. mixing sometimes gives great results indeed, however in some cases it causes it to cause problems so if you decide to try that you might want to start out with smaller amounts. now I also wonder about if you grow one crystal in multiple stages of different growing mediums. high saturation ofcource. that might give interesting results but the order might be important other wise you get that salting out effect. in some cases combining 2 different materials causes it to grow one new type of crystal formation, sometimes it acts more like impurities, sometimes it reduces impurities, and sometimes mostly only one of them crystalizes.

    @@ted_van_loon I didn't mean to mix them, meant that since citric was a good one to do with cooling, it would work in the growing unit. Had forgotten about availability with KNO3... But yes they are very fragile. I'm not sure about sensitivity to moisture, I know it doesn't form hydrates, but does tend to mechanically trap water in the structure. But so far they seem to not be degrading out in the open. The real appeal to KNO3 is that it's crazy easy to grow, overnight can give some very nice structures even

    I am slightly confused about the filtering step, do you filter the citric acid solution and then add it back to the crystal? If so, wouldn't it just be water at that point? I'm a little confused.

    @@NagyBig thanks for answering, so in simple terms, you just take the citrid acid solution, filter it, add the crystal and then repeat?

  • @MadScientist267

    @MadScientist267

    Жыл бұрын

    @@CarpetHater You have to keep replenishing the acid concentration. Either by removing water or dissolving more acid in it. Filtering gets rid of debris but with the cooling method, the container can be covered to protect it from dust, reducing the need to filter it as much. Growth happens during cooling. Now repeat.

Only you won't be able to identify it as "lemon" or "lime" or "orange" or any other specific fruit... It is a good prank... Hand it to someone and ask them which one it is... Try to put a seed crystal in the solution, sprinkle a bit of citric acid to the bottom of your container. If it disappears over time it's not saturated enough. Otherwise it should grow over time, maybe just a nucleation point needed.
