    Hi Colin this is only the second video i have seen on this channel, i have to say you are very thorough in your explanation on how to get everything just so. You are an excellent teacher. This is a medieval artisan craft that stems from the Chain Maille woven by people, who sold the vests or tunics to soldiers before they went into battle. I like the way you do things slowly and i can say with your teaching this craft it is a great way to get started. I could see exactly where you were putting your jump rings right to the end and then adding the crystals i could see clearly where your wire was going so great camera work too. I know this is over 9 years ago and i hope you are still teaching this craft. There is not many people on here that make Chain maille. Thank you so much Colin for sharing your knowledge. it is total genius how it looks when it is done. God bless.

    One thing that amazes me, so many different styles of chains all start with simple jump rings. I'm intrigued 😉

    Oh boy! I did this following your tutorial - too bad I didn't LISTEN to the whole thing before beginning. Didn't make it long enough, then when I added the 3mm bicones, I realized I had to make it longer. When I tried adding rings I didn't have enough room for them to go through - then an AHA moment. They don't lie 2 in 2 - they are offset because of the one starting ring. I am now making one with 18 gauge 4mm so I don't have to add the beads. I will eventually take the 18 ga. 4.5mm apart and start over. Ugh! Always watch and listen all the way through!! Right? Anyway, thanks so much for another great tutorial.

    Top notch instructions!!! Do’s and dont’s very clearly explained. Love the bracelet but I’d have to keep it for myself. No one would want to pay me the million dollars I’d have to charge. 🤪.

    This is the best chain maille tutorial I’ve found! I made the bracelet in just sterling silver and a 4mm ID. I’m somewhat confused by the length of the starter chain. I also wear a 7” bracelet and made my starter chain 13” long. However I had to add several more rings as the length seemed to shrink as I made the bracelet. Am I doing something wrong? The weave looks just like yours when finished.

    A note from the instructor (Colin) The length does shrink as you make it and it's totally probable that my measurements are off by how much it actually shrinks up. I also have a tendency to use big clasps that take up a lot of length, so that is a factor too. The bigger the clasp, the less chain you have to make.

    Nice video, thanks! I have a question . . . this project calls for 3mm ID rings and 3mm crystals, does it follow that 4mm crystals would work with 4mm ID rings? Only because I have both of those at hand . . . lol

    How does "twice the length of the finished bracelet plus an inch" for a seven-inch bracelet come out to thirteen inches? 7 * 2 = 14 + 1 = 15

    For a 7" bracelet, the links section of the chain is 6" + she is using a 1" long clasp in this demo = 7. The length of link chain that you need to create will be 6" x 2 = 12" + 1" = 13

    I learned the box chain in a totally different way, which may not be correct. It is a shortened byzantine method, where you drop and pull the two rings through, after adding two pairs of rings, instead of 3. Does this make sense? If so, is this just another method, or incorrect? It looks pretty much the same, as far as I can tell.

    Oh, OK. TY. I'm obviously a newbie at this. It's truly addictive, though, once you finally start to flow. It's sometimes frustrating getting started. Jump rings were not my fave thing. You definitely need the right tools.

    Why call them "jump rings" they are just ring rings.

  • @beaducation

    @beaducation

    7 жыл бұрын

    I really have no idea how that term started but it's a very old traditional term for this kind of ring.

  • @dukeyin1111

    @dukeyin1111

    Жыл бұрын

    Because when you make these rings , you first coil a long wire into a tight spring shape and cut through all the loops of the spring. Then the resultant rings look like a ring with a discountinuity hence the "jump." One fun fact is that this terminology is also used in gradeschool mathematics when they are talking about graphs--Jump discontinuity, google this term and see image.
