CRYPTOPSY As Gomorrah Burns Album Review | Overkill Reviews

Ойын-сауық

Cryptopsy formed in 1992 and immediately became known as one of the fiercest death metal bands with releases like Blasphemy Made Flesh (1994) and None So Vile (1996), which influenced a generation of technical death bands. The band will release their first record in over 10 years, As Gomorrah Burns.

I'd argue that the redemption already happened with their self-titled album. But hell, Cryptopsy doesn't need to be redeemed for anyone. And their Book Of Suffering EPs were solid AF! I can't wait to sink my teeth into this album and spend the evening listening to it. Gods damn, Riley, please do more reviews, love seeing you promote Canadian bands!!!!

Their self titled was a great return to form. Their tome 1 ep is some of their best stuff ever released. But this album is a nice addition to their discography. It’s a grower but one I can see that I’ll love in time

I don't know what she's talking about when she claims there is plenty of groove. It grooves for maybe 4 bars before going into blast beats or some other swarm of bees sound. This is the kind of death metal I don't enjoy. I prefer death metal with ACTUAL groove like Abysmal Dawn who they happen to be touring with at the moment.

@@rebelshred I am not partial to blast beats but I happen to like bands that use them a lot like Nile. I know I'm probably contradicting myself but I like blast beats when the composition works them into the groove. Cryptopsy seems to me like they are the cusp of something great (for my listening palate) but then they go off on the chaos and it doesn't work for me. I'm still going to see them live next week (first time) so I'm curious to know how that experience is going to affect my opinion.

Riley, you have this youthful enthusiasm in each of your reviews that makes me a listener want to check out any album you review even if I'm not a fan of it. That being said, I love None So Vile, and I've been able to see Cryptospy twice, once with Matt and before that once with Lord Worm. The Lord Worm show was awesome because the performances of Crown of Horns, Slit Your Guts and Graves of the Fathers were batshit insane in the best way. This show was also special because I had an opportunity to have supper (pizza) and chat with Lord Worm, and he is one of the most fascinating people I've ever talked to. I was and still am not a fan of the Unspoken King, but seeing Matt's live performances of newer material and his takes on the classics was incredible. Both shows were some of the craziest pits I've been a part of as well. As for releases, I have to shout out Black pestilence from Calgary, some awesome death/thrash with a tinge of grindcore. On the mellower side, I'm really enjoying Ice Giant's album Ghost of Humanity. It is a beautiful mix of clean and harsh vocals, symphonic elements and great melodic death metal riffs.

This is a good follow-up to the EP's and 2012's album. I'll have to spin this one a few more times and see if it grows on me. I absolutely love the self-titled 2012 album. That was such a gutsy return to craziness, it'll be hard for this one to take its place. Thankfully the writing is a little different than the Book of Suffering EP's. This is kinda darker, more focused writing and riffing. And Matt's lows are really awesome here. I love the vocals in general. He's really nailed it I think.

I love death metal but the groove is not here. You can't head bang for more than 4 bars before it goes into blast beats or what I refer to is the swarm of bees guitar riffage. Death metal with groove is what I prefer and neither is this as technical as Archspire who are the kings of technical death metal imo. There are so many death metal bands who try to squeeze in so many riffs into one song and it just doesn't work for me. I like old school death metal too but for modern death metal bands I prefer the groove like that from Abysmal Dawn. I guess if you like a specific genre it doesn't automatically mean you'll like the majority of bands who play that genre.
