Cryptopsy songs are like laying guitar riffs over a drumsolo.

Indeed, that's the coolest part of death metal, the drums, without it it'll sound not so cool

My god, he is great. I played played this style of drums years ago. Most People have no idea how great he is and how hard this is. The great ones make it look easy.

The pattern at 3:25 will forever be known to me as "The Octopus Beat". Seriously. What possesses a human to play that am I right? Shitfuck.

I've watched this video occasionally for the past ten years, and to this day this is the one that bugs me the most. This performance was out of this world. I would give everything for this exact recording with good audio and video quality.

Agreed. Not only is everything clear, you can really hear him hammering those kicks! That's incredible. I don't like modern playthrough vids much. They just use the album track and have the guy almost play it. Still, I don't always need what I hear on album to be 100% replicated live. That's crazy in a lot of respects. Peace

3:27 - This is the only beat I have ever been able to listen to and not quite understand what he's doing. Even watching it doesn't shed anymore light. Fucking mind boggling. Crazy crossovers between the snare/hats/ride while keeping a double bass beat AND choking the hats for accents? I don't understand. Amazing.

The repeating pattern is: (beat) e & a HATS snare* snare HATS snare* snare RIDE snare snare HATS snare* snare Hands alternate RLRL throughout. Right foot plays a steady 8th note pulse on the bass drum. As you mentioned, he chokes the hats with his foot -- I noted that with the asterisks. It's essentially a 3/4 pattern juxtaposed against the guitar riff, which is unquestionably in 4/4 time. Together, the drums and guitars are creating a polymeter phrase. That--plus the speed of it--is why it feels like a mindfuck. You'll notice in this video though that he doesn't start the repeating pattern until beat 2 of the first bar of that riff. I don't know why that's the case, but it's probably related to using a 10 bar phrase instead of 8. Anyway, the first beat is: (1) Ride/bass (e) snare (&) snare/bass (a) snare. I know this is an old comment but I hope that helps.

@@TheHMan I second what Matt Telgen says, that beat was a 16-year-old dilemma until I saw your comment. Thank you for solving this. Also, love the fact that even Lord Worm has to approach Flo's drumset in order to actually have an idea when to start growling next after that part comes on. xD

Love or hate death/extreme metal. Love or hate new cryptopsy (we dont need to go into this). One thing is for sure and thats that this video serves as a great example of what the mind of man can achieve providing there is a lifelong desire to do so. For this reason Flo is my fave drummer, and an idol. I still cant get my head around everything he does in this song after all these years go on Flo!

@MrSatanochio I agree a lot of people accuse metal heads of not be musically diverse when in fact metal is the most musically diverse. Heavy metal is the culmination of everything out there. Flo for example uses a shit ton of Jazz techniques especially in Once was Not. Metal heads are more diverse than other fuck asses give us credit for

@Applehurler I look like one of those dude minus the dirty hair, greasy long hair doesn't look bad ass so I keep it clean. I will generally be hanging out with many different types of people as well as people that look like me. Every metal head that is like me isn't what you've explained though, they are all very diverse. I think you've just met some bad ones.

  • @Abrahamhamham

Derek Roddy said that every non-metal listener tells to metal heads to listen to something else too, to diverse their music range, but what about those people ? Shouldn`t they listen to some metal also, to diverse their music range and taste ? It`s funny how this crap only applies to metal listeners, like we are some sort of weak chain in the music world, when really, if you take a closer look, metal is really one of the most technical and difficult genres of music to make.

Flo is, in my opinion, the best death metal drummer ever. Actually when I heard some Cryptopsy songs I didn't believe he can actually do that. But whatever Flo can actually do, I am saying with no doubts, that the albums of Cryptopsy are the worst mastered albums ever to appear. In the album ,,Once Was Not" where actually this song is from, the drums are the loudest instrument. It just suppresses the appearance of the other musicians, although they are still to be heard. That, in my opinion, is awful and is the perfect example of what metal album should not be. I still think the songs are great. But, damn, how am I supposed to hear the amazing solo from ,, Angelskindergarten" when these hyperactive drums make it impossible to distinguish. I am just furious, because the riffs are unbelievably good, drums are... Flo Mounier, bass guitar is insane, but everything sounds like noise. I mean the first album of Death ,,Scream Bloody Gore" is 100000 times better mastered than the fifth of Cryptopsy - I AM NOT SAYING THAT ITS BETTER AS MUSIC, BUT ONLY THE MASTERING IS BETTER.

I’m trying to learn all the guitar riffs after the solo in Angelskingarden… the struggle is real 😂 although modern technology like the Moises app for example helps to a degree with getting the parts isolated. I do think the mix on Once Was Not is fitting for the chaotic nature of the music oddly enough, just not the best for trying to learn guitar or bass parts by ear haha

You are confusing mastering with mixing... the mixing is what annoys you in that album. For me it sounds OK, sure the drums are a bit loud but the guitar tone and overall mixing is pretty good.

@MetalforOden Yes and no. I usually associate metalheads as being the annoying posers who listen to bands with a "brutal" image. I fucking love metal and pretty much all aspects of it but I fucking hate seeing dirty teenagers with long unwashed hair and Cannibal Corpse T-Shirts hanging out as a group of "metalheads." Those are the types of people that make metal look bad and have no musical diversity

i never said it sucks.you make assumptions. i'm simply saying that it's not all that technical.and he's one of the most technical drummers. so deathmetal drumming has alot of room to grow.we've seen it get faster.and now it will either get more technical and interesting or alot of people are gonna get bored,if they aren't already.
