Sloppy????
If you think it’s sloppy, you’ve clearly never payed attention when listening to any of their albums. There’s an all out chaos to the sound that just works, and it sounds organic, especially on the first two albums. It’s insanity in music form

@chillhopdrumz1862 Just tuned into this comment after randomly hitting play on this video after 3 years.. You're absolutely right.. It's that natural on the scene "slop" that really makes it so good.. The studio version is just editing to make sound as intended but to be able to do these things live is really something else..

He isn't sloppy though. The album sounds the same. He does slightly offbeat blasts a lot.
I guess no one here in the comments knows of Flo's jazz background. It's so obvious that he's taking a jazz approach to his playing and more importantly the live execution of the songs. To me it's the main reason why he's still an interesting drummer while other speed machine drummers aren't as talked about anymore.
@deanmayberry9713
5 жыл бұрын
This. He's actually improvising a lot of those fills. He's played the song surely millions of times by now and I'm sure he has it memorized. I'm gonna truthfully state that the majority of extreme metal drummers are boring these days. They're robots. You want that? Program a drum machine and it's infallible -- it'll play the same thing every single time perfectly 100% of the time. Jazz and tech death metal (which was clearly highly influenced by jazz) was never about being perfect. I guess now it is, but the fills and improv particularly in a live setting when everyone knows the damn song is what makes drumming INTERESTING even to other drummers. I'm gonna think, "oh shit sick! He just pulled improv!" if I see a drummer do something different live. The singer is allowed to break up the song and shout, "1234" but the drummer can't have those liberties as long as he's still holding it down? That's a bit illogical. A recording where the band is on strict metronome practice and does the same song upwards of thousands of times to get the perfect take is very different. Hell, look at the godfather of prog drumming. The man has the most ridiculous kit ever and completely does improv live which people go crazy for. Flo is a good drummer that's busted his ass and devoted his life to playing the drums, recording, and touring (the world at that). The man can have some fucking fun because frankly he's earned it. Those perfectionist armchair theorists can't play this shit anyways. Constant double bass also gets goddamn boring. It lost the, "oh my God how does anyone do this" a long time ago. A straight 4 gets boring. How many drummers drop their 4 for a fill? A lot do. Extreme metal has brainwashed people to believe that the only way to keep time is via constant double bass which gets really goddamn uninteresting really fast.

He was absolutely never a jazz player. He got away with playing fast and sloppy back in the day. Drummers are more proficient now. He just needs to clean up his playing a technique. This is a classic song. And he is a cool guy.

People talking smack about Flo.Flo has always been somewhat inconsistent. If you listen to None So Vile you' ll probably hear about 4-5 different snare tones.Same goes with the kicks,it's not exactly a 16th note run always, but that is what's refreshing. He plays like an animal, and there were times that people used to appreciate such performances, for example every single work of Emperor, first albums of Dying Fetus, the list is endless. We 've reached an era where everyone is perfect, digitalized as fuck and the soul is squeezed out of the player in exchange to 100% on the grid tight performances.People don't play like that, most of them don't at least in a live situation so why bother ? We,as players and listeners have made perfect average. How to stand out amongst average perfection ? By being real and honest, just like Flo.

He played this so well. It might look sloppy to some people, but did it seem like they were lost because of his playing? No. He was right on time for every transition. The kick is probably the main thing people feel is wrong. Just because it's not 16th's. I understand where they're coming from because 16th's feel more correct, but music doesn't work like that. Cryptopsy sounds like this and they're so fucking awesome.
This is what you call realistic. Not all drummers are drum machines. I always loved this because its raw, its what death metal was founded on. Not the most FLAWLESS drumming, but incredibly difficult none the less and impressive. Side note, i've always kinda hated cryptopsy's vocals. It definitely grew on me but still is a lil rough lol

Damn! I can't decide if that is a athletic musician or a musical athlete... no matter what, that performance was incredible.
Slit Your Guts was one of my jams back in high school. Good shit
no matter how "sloppy" flo is playing, this man is a huge influence on many other death metal drummers, the drumming on none so vile is absolutely out of this world, just like the album as a whole
I actually like that he doesn't sound like a drum machine :)
Perfect. Timeless. Glad to see it can break down music to the AAL crowd as well as metal is supposed to break down what you assume is supposed to be correct. Hold my metronome lads
Sickest drummer ever, makes it look effortless
Flo might not be the cleanest drummer ever, but I think his creativity in extreme metal makes him stand out. He's made a lot of creative drumming parts to riffs that most would just straight up do some lame double kick backbeat or blasting.

Speed, technical ability, creativity and endurance. Perfect metal drummer.
Man, that kit looks far to flimsy to take that kind of beating. I kept waiting for something to break, and though nothing broke I did see him adjusting snare spring tension in the middle of a blast beat. Inhuman! Respect to Flo. More respect for the drums for holding together
Flo is has been creative and consistent with his style. As a musician, I didn't even notice he was "sloppy", tf are you people bitching about.
Sloppy well he does play with a loose jazz feel and let’s be honest he is the reason extreme metal drumming is where it’s at today he influenced everyone and he is on of the originators
