Cryptocurrency Investigation - Blockchain basics

Ғылым және технология

Cryptocurrency investigation is much like other forms of financial crime investigation. Find transactions, find accounts and tie accounts to a real person. Cryptocurrency investigations are made somewhat easier since transactions are often public on a blockchain ledger. An investigator can analyze the public blockchain to investigate all transactions from a given account (wallet address). These investigations are similar to requesting transaction information from a bank. The major difference is that you don't need to request transaction information, since it is already public. However, it may be more of a challenge to tie an account to a specific user since there is no organization controlling who makes an account.

Before you start with cryptocurrency investigations take a moment to understand the basics of blockchain. Each system will have its own specific features, but the underlying function of most ledger systems is the same. Most investigations focus on blockchain transactions. We introduce some basic concepts that will help when getting into more advanced cryptocurrency investigations.

I would love to see a forensic investigation video made on any recent token "rug pulls" . Which wallets were involved, were they "founders" wallets, where they went, etc. Since these events are becoming more commonplace, it would be nice to know that the rug pull execution is traceable. Would totally make a donation for that video.

I was just reading the article below about that exact topic. AFAIK most of them don't usually get dumped into known founders wallets. I'll dig in to some of the biggest recent cases and make a video on it. Thank you! www.complianceweek.com/risk-management/report-cryptocurrency-related-crime-reaches-record-14b-in-2021/31227.article

Some of them are - it depends on the company. I'd recommend the book "Investigating Cryptocurrencies" (amzn.to/3r9y9kp) it's getting a bit old, but still a lot of great info if you're getting started.

Whilst this was a very useful introduction to blockchain - I was expecting to learn about how to carry out a cryptocurrency investigation, which wasn't covered at all. Is this content coming in a later video? If not, I seriously suggest you re-title your video to more accurately describe the content. Cheers.

You cannot contact people if you only have the wallet address. You could embed messages in the transaction and send them money maybe?

No sadly. Fortunately it was only £500, even the fraud squad said there wasn't enough to investigate although therlir online form was shite - too simplistic so I gave up. I did identify what was going on though. Everytime you deposited funds it was instantly distributed to various accounts so what you saw on the website was make believe. Anyway, I invested on a proper exchange and got my money back. I hope you didn't lose too much money.

"Never invest in something you don't understand." How can people invest in this 'crypto future' when (guess) 1/10,000 people can understand it? Who has time, patience(or comprehensive ability)for crypto classes before their first transaction?

I'm in the process of being scammed. My account address is actually the perpetrator's address. When I plugged that address into Block Chain Explorer there is an endless number of transactions (not mine I guess). Is there a simply way to seize these funds or at least what I'm owed as my assets were frozen on first attempt (obviously)?

If you have the private key for the wallet, then you also have full control of the wallet. Just transfer what you want to another private wallet only you control. If someone is hosting your wallet, then they are probably some sort of exchange? If they are an exchange, then they should be able to request funds or call law enforcement. If you are sending your money to another person's personal wallet you can still try to open a case with law enforcement, but the likelihood of getting your money back is very, very low. Only use very well established exchanges and transfer money to local wallets that only you control and *know how to secure*.

Thanks, it's actually a scam exchange where my account address isn't actually mine but scammer so whenever I deposited funds it was going into their account but they frozen my assets as soon as I attempted to withdraw hence the backdoor route. I've informed fraud Scotland but nothing else has happened. What software should I use to make the transfer, the one use used in your video?

  • @DFIRScience

@@oddjob6001 contact their "support" and tell them you are trying to transfer in 500,000 euro but you need to pay the "down payment" first, but your assets were frozen "for some reason". Hopefully they will be greedy and release your funds to try to get the 500k. Don;t let them know you think they are a scam. If that doesn't work then you will have to trace them back to an actual exchange, which is not usually easy.

Thanks for your advice. The so called customer service rarely responds but I'm in contact with the scammer via WhatsApp and whenever I mention a delay with customer service the scammer directs me to check again and lo and behold there's a response. Anyway, the scammer stated to unfreeze my funds I need to deposit the same amount I originally deposited which isn't happening so I'm going to see if I can withdraw anyway as I don't believe 'my funds' are actually frozen as it is the scammer account. Thanks again though.
